Title: "Like" button on posts
Post by: MinZaPint on September 25, 2013, 11:46:08 AM
I frequently find that when I'm having a quick browse and haven't time to post a reply, that a like button in recognition of someone's modelling skills or financial dexterity in acquiring models would be very useful. the "Thank you" is fine when receiving help and replies to questions. Just my an idea.

I tend to think that people use the 'Thank You' as a 'Like' button'.  I will look into installing a 'like' feature though if members would like it.  Please have your say folks!

I also use "Thank You" in place of 'Like', but it would be nice to have both choices

Hi, I have not been on the site for a few weeks (Illness) but I think a Like button is a good idea

Personally - I don't see the point ...

We already have a button - why not just use that, or give it a rename to "Thanks/Like"?

Otherwise we need a "dislike" button as well - and a "can't be arsed" button too ...  After all, if the original post you want to "like" doesn't interest you enough to actually reply to it in the first place, why bother at all ?

But let's not go button mad, like RMWeb has.

Not even an 'add button' button?

I kind of figured that if you were thanking somebody, you could just be thanking them for posting and therefore you like what they have posted?

Can't cope with too many buttons!

a match and can of petrol button would be useful, of course the mods would then need some sort of fire extinguisher process or sprinkler system.....  :rain:

I agree with the OP - Like and Thank You are sufficiently different (to me) to warrant different buttons. I don't use the Thank You button to express liking something and equally I don't want to add a "me too" post.

Though I also agree that we don't want to go down the many button route!

Cheers, Mike

Surely a like button and a thank you button stops you from posting a thanks or a like for the comment in a thread, this is what forums are all about hence I like that because or thank you because, are these buttons just not making us lazy in giving our opinions.

Just my thoughts.

Not so sure that would be a good idea. If you 'can't be arsed' surely you wouldn't be bothered enough to click on a button labelled as such. Likewise if you don't want to say 'thank you' or 'like' (which are different) then simply don't click on either. 'Dislike' and 'disagree' buttons are likely to encourage negativity and cause arguments plus would overdo the number of buttons (IMO).

Thats odd.. I'm agreeing with 'H'  ;) on this.

"If you can't think of anything nice to say don't say anything" as they say.

Nothing will replace a proper response giving a reason for the like/dislike/agree/disagree otherwise we start getting all trendy like farcebook (although one  system I liked was a pair of buttons, + and -  which clocked a counter  that displayed as +x or -x)

"If you can't think of anything nice to say don't say anything" as they say.
So why have a button to show you couldn't think of anything nice to say ?  Are we here really like sheep, that we have to click "like" ?

If we do, it'll be getting more & more like FarceBook ...  We've survived I don't know how many years without a "like" button - why copy other places ?  If you "like" something, come out & say it properly !  Don't just click a silly button.  To my mind, it just shows a dumbing-down ... - one that is evident enough in the general populace given the utter garbage generally on TV.

Hmm, I'm not so sure that is entirely true. Sure, the 'can't be arsed' is just a ruse (which I'm sure everyone got) but you did actually post: "We already have  a button - why not just use that, or give it a rename to "Thanks/Like"? Otherwise we need a "dislike" button as well"

However, the issue is AFAISI (from the OP) that 'thanks' and 'like' are not the same - which it seems at least a few here are able enough to realise. The need for other negative buttons is simply a no-no but the splitting of the 'Thank you' button has merit.

Personally I'd rather someone click a 'thanks' or 'like' button than clutter up the forum with repetitious 'me too' posts (often with a host of unnecessary bouncing smilies, waving flags and dancing emoticons) that add nothing new to the discussion or neither makes an interesting point. But that's just me. Others may just click the 'Like' and/or the 'Thank you' button.  ;)

I'm with H on reducing otherwise empty postings.  However, I'm not so sure that "Like" and "Thank you" buttons are significantly different.  If you liked a posting, without having anything particular to add, then "Thank you" (for posting) says that as equally well as "Like".  If you have some extra reason for thanking the poster (perhaps because he has answered your specific question), that need not be shared with the rest of us, then a personal message is more appropriate anyway.

Stick with one button, thank you.  Call it what you like.

Why not just simply rename it "Appreciate" button? That word covers thanked and liked!

Appreciate definition, to be grateful or thankful for: They appreciated his thoughtfulness, liked.

You would have to exclude the moderating team as on average we all help a few people everyday so we rack them quite quickly  ;)
