Forums really can grow arms and legs, and quickly get away from the mods \ admin, my guess would be to keep it simple initially, see how it develops, and take it from there - a pen and notepad by the side of the keyboard will probably come in handy ;) You have no doubt looked at other examples and have a good idea of what is out there, so you will be able to judge from what you already know, and hopefully improve upon it ;D
You could start off with British, European and World sections just to get the ball rolling. No doubt there will be a call for separate DC \ DCC sections, landscaping and wiring \ electronics sections.

Yes, forums easily become tough to manage - as I have found in the past. A lot of members have joined already, so if it continues I can appoint volunteers as Moderators in the future. I'll get myself a notepad.... :D Thanks!
Without admin having to approve members before they can post you massively exposed to Trolls, Advertisers etc.

Thanks for the idea Jack. Fortunately there haven't been any trouble makers yet, but once it happens often I can upgrade the security settings for new members.
It would be good to have a model railway photography board, so we can all share and enjoy each others hard work. I personally would suggest an NGF "virtual exhibition". i have picked up so many tips and ideas from other modellers, it could be productive!! Great forum, lets see it grow and fly the flag for our hobby. Ian.

I would like to see something like a world globe with a train to indicate the global nature of our hobby.

How about a 'Gizmo' section/forum where members could list useful gadgets that they have discovered/made to help them ahead with their N gauge hobby.

how about a members feedback section in the forsale/wanted section nothing as silly as ebay but a section next to each member saying positvie or negitive feedback.
Good idea, and something I'd thought of too. I will work on something once things pick up on that side of thing. I can try and feature this on members profiles.

Something I have seen on a couple of other forums is the ability to 'like' a posting. It is a system that I personally quite like if you don't just want to post 'me too' or something similar...

Look in the Outbox, as they should be saved there if the right box is ticked in your preferences.

Glad you've said that. I've already installed it, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. I'll look into it in the future.

Yes you're a Newbie until you reach 50 posts then you become Jr. Member (2-stars), then a Snr. Member at 250 posts (?).
Admins have 5 red stars to signify Mod status.

how it would work is anything you have thats unwanted you can post it in the section and other people can ask for it. FOR FREE!
The only thing the lucky person would pay for is postage.

I would like to suggest a forum encyclopaedia, a sort of a-z of how to's (or not in my case)
The idea occurred with cuppas' bowden cables and crank system for points, I thought something like that could be worth preserving for all current and prospective members. Cant have these admin guys taking things easy now can we :evil:

I think the idea of a 'free to a good home' section is a good one. I have helped out a member of this forum with some points i did not need. I guess, from time to time, we all have odd bits that just gather dust.

Several forums I belong to have a section seperate from all serious threads etc that is specifically for 'Off forum comments/jokes/grumbles etc'
Would it be possible for one to be set up here for 'light hearted relief subjects'

Karma is a feature that shows the popularity of a member. Members, if allowed, can 'applaud' or 'smite' other members, which is how their popularity is calculated. You can change the number of posts needed to have a "karma", the time between smites or applauds, and if administrators have to wait this time as well.
Whether or not groups of members can smite others is controlled by a permission. If you have trouble getting this feature to work for everyone, double check your permissions.
Yeah, that sounds like a great way to end up with a smiting war going on :) and "Who the **** just smote my karma, I had a perfect 5 until now!" type arguments.
Let's just go on the assumption that we all think everyone here is great ;)

I am new round these parts so apologies if it has already been mooted but I think you could do with a 'Products' section in the main index. Sub catagories could then perhaps be something like:
Farish
Dapol
Ixion
smaller suppliers
Peco
Non Uk
The above section would help clean up the forum a bit as there do seem to be allot of posts scattered around which are difficult to find if you havn't originally noted the section that they are in.

I Think this would be a bad idea. Members should not be voted on by their popularity. That's a bit like getting picked for football at school, there is always gonna be one member who has so much to offer but gets 'left in goal', just based on appearance of their posts.
I love this site because we are all mates and we feel encouraged to post no matter what the subject, (held together by an N Gauge theme) regardless of age/experience.
Being voted on would discourage the shy-er members from posting. We should always remain neutral but fair. Any members posting threads that are bad/nasty/dis-tasteful should be warned, good threads encouraged, informative threads developed, boring threads judged in amount of replies by members and bonkers/silly/irrevelant(but non-bad/nasty/dis-tasteful) threads ignored.
This aint a popularity contest just a place for mates to talk about their hobby and lives.... NGF NOT X-Factor!!

I wouldn't mind the positive thing of giving someone a nice feedback for a really good post. But we all do that with the thumbsup icon anyway.
