Title: fine chain
Post by: Moria on May 06, 2022, 07:33:28 PM
Hi, does anyone know of really fine chain.

Best I can find is 40 links per inch and I'm thinking more like 80 per inch would be what I am looking for for tie downs and water crane chain :)

Regards

Graham

I've used this:

https://www.langleymodels.co.uk/awd1/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=5635&search=chain (https://www.langleymodels.co.uk/awd1/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=5635&search=chain)

on this:

(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/122/2975-060522194757.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=122530)

I think that is the sort of use you have in mind.

I've not found anyone who makes 80 links/inch.

Cheers,

Chris

I've no idea how many links per inch but have a look at cheap jewellery at a car boot sale.

Some interesting suggestions here:

Interesting thread to read too. Incredible modelling!

A suggestion from a very fine US modeller, David K. Smith, is twisted wire beading needles.  An example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254897585436?hash=item3b59147d1c:g:LRwAAOSwPdNdRAmc (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254897585436?hash=item3b59147d1c:g:LRwAAOSwPdNdRAmc)

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I have ordered a couple of options mentioned above and will see what looks best when installed :)

Again,  thanks all.

I favour 1:700 model ship chains:

Sorry, this may be a bit late but this is the chain I use:

(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/122/3276-160522055747.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=122771)

I have used the 27 links/inch and found it very good for N gauge.  It is obviously also available in black with 40 links/inch.

I bought this in the United States.  Not sure if there are any suppliers in the UK.

Here is another option that will be easier to source in the UK:  N brass locos fine chain.  It has 48 links per inch.  Scroll down to "Chain".

Just received this, which doesn't look too excessively oversize;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173118716733?var=471866417066 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173118716733?var=471866417066)

It should look better when it's been blackened. Being sterling silver I understand that can be achieved with the help of a plastic bag and some mashed up boiled egg yolks - I'll find out when I get a chance to try it.

I have no idea how many links there are per inch, all I know so far is that it's darned tiny and manipulating it is like trying to catch an escaped chinchilla  :smiley-laughing:

My mate did rather regret letting it  have a run around the house  :smiley-laughing:

BTW, the trick is to grab it by the tail as it runs past you.

You've no chance if you try to grab it by the body - the fur is so long that the actual body is only about 1/3 the size of what you see. As soon as it feels your hand on its fur it jumps or changes direction before you can get a grip on its body. So you grab it by the tail with one hand and then quickly bring the other around its body.

Then put it back in its cage PDQ.

I bought some of this (thanks for the tip) - it appears to be about 32 links per inch - this is what it looks like on a bogie bolster...

Looks good - as mine does now it's been blackened and added to my water cranes.

Three days in a jar with half a dozen mashed up hard boiled egg yolks blackened it really nicely.
