I thought that might be your "cuppa tea" Mick @Newportnobby . I might have posted this before but if I could play drums this how I would like to play, Dream Theatre with "Enigma Machine" live...

The drummer (Mike Mangione) has now left DT and been replaced by their original drummer Mike Portnoy; which has once again divided the opinions of DT fans...

Cheers,

Tim

Obviously I have to have my son's band's latest (released today) on repeat :)    Spot the lefty 8 string bass player at the back :)

Ahh, I did post it before! I will try and find something different for you Mick, such as what I am actually listening to at the moment...

A recent offering from The Strawbs, not how I remember them at all...

Probably not everyone's "cuppa" but I like it...

Cheers,

Tim

Wow! Mr @ntpntpntp that makes a very welcome change from Lewis Capaldi et al. Is the left hand 8 string bassist your son? Loads going on in there, I would imagine the vocalists get through a lot of Strepsils!!

Cheers,

Tim

Very good. I've always liked the Strawbs and have 2 or 3 albums, although Dave Cousins voice can pall after a while.
One of their best tracks IMHO contains some hugely powerful lyrics

@ntpntpntp That's very good although a little OTT for my tastes

Meanwhile, I know @Malc and I really like this track but this strays very far from the studio version

And then another hoary old fave with the legendary Scott Gorham. When I saw them on their farewell tour in Bristol John Sykes occupied the other guitar slot

Yup, that's my James :) He's not actually left-handed, but he picked up my bass when he was young and liked it that way round :)  He far surpassed my playing abilities years ago!

He also writes a fair amount of the material, contributes to the growly vocals, and he programmed the lighting for that latest video too.  An all-round clever lad IMO.    He teaches music to youngsters - just imagine a long-haired metal musician teaching guitars, keyboard, drums and ukulele to primary school kids  :D

Check out some of Broken Calling's other youtubes if you like that sort of thing :)

The Yes tribute gets a bit lost on the way for me... However, "The Sun Goes Down" is one of my favourite numbers by Thin Lizzy. It wasn't until recently that my brother-in-law got me listening to them again. I think both guitarists here SB and JS are underrated. Obviously, Gary Moore was great as well. I have an edited version of Life Live.

Well, a lot going on this afternoon but I have to say that most of it is not for me.
Epica is ok but it's not my cup off tea as @Moonglum predicted.
As for Dream Theater, again not something I'd go back to.

Both bands I maybe would have listened to back in my teenage years but then again maybe not.

As for your son's band @ntpntpntp . You must be very proud of him but again, it's rather lost on me.

I agree with @Moonglum about the Anderson/May version of Wurm gets a bit lost somewhere along the way.

That leaves me with Strawbs. Thanks for that link Tim.

I saw The Strawbs a few times (including once at Salisbury) around 50 years ago.
Maybe their stuff seems a little dated these days and I agree with Mick that Dave Cousin's voice can be a bit irksome.

So, on the whole, nothing too positive from me today I'm afraid but this is a fascinating thread none the less.

Cheers

I'll get round to fixing it drekkly me 'ansome.

What I like about Lizzy is the guitarists, right from day 1, have always played tasteful breaks rather than being 'speed merchants'. I never really got on with Gary Moore as he fell into that latter category, although he did tone things down a bit for his 'Still got the blues' album. Same goes for Wishbone Ash - tasty licks as opposed to 'how many notes can I play in 1 minute' frenetic style. Just my opinion, though.

To redress the balance a little, here's an artist that we saw at Glastonbury around 12 years ago.
Sam Duckworth performs under the name of Get Cape, Wear Cape Fly (apparently named after some sort of video game).
This won't be to everyone's taste but we rather liked his laid back but enthusiastic style when we saw him :

I used to love Wishbone Ash. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

Their 'Live Dates' album still is a regular visitor to my lugholes :)
