Hi everone. I'm new to both this forum and to railway modelling generally.
I'm attempting to model a small Collier based on the early 70's in South yorks. I have started to collect a load of 16t mineral wagons knowing these were still in use into the early 70's but have now discovered that the hoppers also started to be widely used from the late 60's. I understand that to remain as prototypical as possible i need to stick to has wagons but would like to ask if collieries were ever set up to load both types of wagon before turning solely to mgr's

welcome to the forum mark

The Western Region in South Wales reorganised its freight working over a few years in the very late 1960s.  This was in order to run fewer trains, and free up siding space at several yards.  Within South Wales a greater number of coal trains ran as block workings from pithead to customer (e.g. steel works, power stations, export etc) reducing marshalling at yards and freeing up space. These trains were predominantly hauled by Type 3 locos class 37

There was an increase in longer distance household coal trains from Jersey and Radyr near Cardiff to destinations in the South West, South East, London and the Home Counties which were formed of fitted and unfitted minerals, fitted and unfitted hoppers and generally hauled by Type 4 motive power mainly Class 47 and MGR (merry go round) coal trains in the same area were hauled by Cl.47 s.

MGR hoppers were also used to convey PFA (Pulverised Fuel Ash) commonly known as 'Fly Ash' from Aberthaw Power Station to unloading sites in Somerset, for use in constructing the M5 motorway. These trains were formed of MGR hoppers and hauled by pairs of Cl.37s.

so could get away with it

a good layout example can be found :

Thanks very much for that. The link to Gresham is excellent. It's the first time in many months of looking that I've found a diagram of the actual working of the loiading

welcome

bersham has plenty of potential and could be adapted. there are colliery layouts on this forum. but also what strikes me is the potential for industrial locos, steam and diesel, shunting operations. class 08, 20, 25, 31, 37, 47

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merry-go-round_train has notes to be aware of
