I have your 3 .jpg files from the other forum. Would you like me to try and put them in this thread, just to see if the "Add image to post and upload to gallery" functions?

@mark ellis - What a fantastic list!  This must be the most comprehensive list of Union Mills locos ever produced.  It deserves a wider distribution.

Ian, if this site allowed us to post images directly then the list would have been on this thread.
It's on the identical thread in New Railway Modellershttps://www.newrailwaymodellers.co.uk/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=57277

Rather than posting photos/images, you can attach a pdf file directly to a NGF post.  I think a lot of people would like to have it in this format.  Just click on the link below the posting box that says: "Attachments and Other Options".  You should be able to attach a pdf file.

Hi, @mark ellis Personally, due to the increased proliferation of fictitious liveries, I would also like to see fictitious liveries also clearly indicated.  I know Union Mills have produced several non-prototypical liveries over the years.  (Yes, I know I am asking for a lot!).

Ian

how do you mean?

A fictitious livery is a livery that is produced on a model even though the prototype never carried that livery.  For example, looking at the list of Union Mills’ models, I am pretty sure that a J39 was never painted in LNER green.  Also, I doubt that a J39 ever carried BR green with “British Railways” on the tender, although I stand to be corrected.

Changing manufacturers, Rapido have recently announced that their Class 28 Metrovick Co-Bo will be available in Railway Technical Centre red/blue livery.  Again, this is a what-might-have-been livery.

Changing scales, in OO KR models have released, or are planning to release, the GT3 (which only ever ran in chocolate brown) in LMS and BR black, BR green and BR blue with full yellow ends!

These liveries are sometimes described as non-prototypical, what-might-have-been, never ran in, and even neverwazas!

Some preserved locos have been painted in liveries that they never carried in revenue service.  For example, LMS 2-6-4T No. 42085 has been painted in Caledonian Railway blue and several manufacturers have issued their models in this livery.  Because locos exist in these liveries, I do not consider examples like this to be “fictitious” liveries.

I do not have a problem with manufacturers issuing models in liveries never carried by the prototypes as these liveries are usually colourful and appear to be very popular. They provide additional income for the manufacturer that can be invested in future models.  I just think that the liveries of these models should be indicated as fictitious or non-prototypical (just as models are often marked “weathered”, for example) so that the consumer knows what he or she is buying.

Thanks again for producing a very informative list of Union Mills’ locos.

Ian

That's because you're trying to use the wrong method.  "Attachments" is for pdf files.  Use "Add image to post and upload to gallery", right above the post text editor.  It's always been there :)

There's a whole thread on how to upload photos.

Ian, I've learnt the hard way never to say never about anything. And we know that books are sometimes composed of what the author thinks rather than fact.
I know that Colin does great research on his models, as shown on his loco sheets. The colours might not be 100%, but I'd rather have a UM  than some modern over detailed plastic BacFar or Dapol that can't pull its own weight and would be better on the shelf ;)

@mark ellis :

I would love to see your list of Union Mills locos in a format like in Engee Publishing’s “Spotter’s Guide to British Locomotives” or Ramsay’s “British Model Trains Catalogue”.

These two publications typically list each loco manufactured in the following format:
...
-   Early emblem or late crest (if BR)
...
Ian,
Having spent 20 minutes modifying the spreadsheet - I am reliably informed that UM only use Early totem crest on his locos.

So just need to see photos of Dean 2392 and 2414 to finish the sheet

I don't know if this will be of interest.  As my model is based on the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line in the 30s, I was disappointed that Colin chose to present 2516, which was shedded at Carmarthen, in BR black livery.  He very kindly agreed to make a Great Western 2516 variant for me, which is here running through Pencader.
...
I'm hoping that you won't mind my sharing this photo on the Facebook group. What name do I accredit the loco to?
