Shame it doesn't open until Monday as I'm heading Leicester way tomorrow.

Also be interesting to see if there's any N Gauge stuff in there  :P :P :P

Neal.

I think it's a good idea and a way of showcasing their whole range to the public.

Excellent news, just down the road from me.  The signal box in Anstey (approx 30 mins drive) is also good for Farish.

Just reviewed the Farish/Bachmann site. Of the locomotives listed ( a total of 89 items - including Multiple units) only about 20 are available to order direct from the site. I know that it is not all about locomotives , but it doesn't seem a good idea to open a shop with limited items to sell.

Reading the article, they see it as an extension of marketing so I imagine stock will be near to full RRP so as not to damage relations with retailers who stock Bachmann - they wouldn't want to get into that Hornby undercutting it's own retailers situation.

But the concept looks sound if it is to encourage general model making of which model railways is a part.

As Hornby edge ever further away from it's customers Bachmann is doing the opposite and looking to generate interest and hobby take up.

I believe Peco have had a shop on their factory site for years ?

Although great to see a new high street presence the cynic in me sees Bachmann following Hornby's lead and cutting out the middle man. For every unit they sell from the shop they will be making more money as there is no dealer margin and if they do decide to discount there will still be no dealer margin and I guess they won't be constrained by the 15% max discount allowed by dealers on new releases.

They will be constrained for the duration it is applied to retailers. One of the conditions for retail price management to be permissable, is that the manufacuter/wholesaler may not supply direct to the consumer outside of the limits they place on retailers...

But no dealer margin means they could offer free postage ;)
