Some things such as shuttle automation I'd argue are easier in DC as you're controlling the track not the loco and any loco can be used (no requirement for DCC addressing and identification). Plenty of products out there for controlling DC shuttles, station stops etc. with or without detection sensors.  I have an automated sequence of 7 trains shuttling back and forth using Heathcote Electronics modules. 

DCC does have clever stuff such as ABC to brake/stop at a red signal (for example) and some decoders can perform simple back-and-forth shuttling by themselves (I played with that with my LGB locos probably 20 years ago).

More complex automation via software is possible with DC or DCC using block detection and feedback.  Rather beyond the realms of the OP's question though (I think).
