Quote from: Newportnobby on Today at 02:35:29 PMI followed 'TfTO' with 'Close to the Edge' which (IMHO) is just awesome but then I tire of Jon Anderson's voice and look out something else.
I too find Anderson's voice a bit tiresome these days.
For me The Yes Album excels with its rather brash rawness but there are some masterful moments on Topographic Oceans and Close to the Edge.
Topographic Oceans loses its way for me - especially on discs 3 and 4. Perhaps they should have put their energies into a single album instead of a double.
As for Relayer, I have never really taken to it although I appreciate that it is a fine album.
Oh and I rather like Time and a Word (the track not the album although the album is pretty good).
I used to have a downloaded live version of TaaW featuring Rick Wakeman on piano which to my mind was exceptional but I lost it and have never come across it again since.

General Discussion / sorry for the foul language

having sold off all of my n guage stock etc a couple of years ago, and concentrated on my 1/76 wargames hobby instead, I have finally decided to cross over to the dark side, which involves creating an, ahh OO scale, layout which will double as a sceniced area for my 1/76 wargames conflicts.
I am not proud of this decision, but it makes sense to my now warped mind.
the front bedroom will now be converted into the railway / wargames room, and the 'layout' will become dual perpose where IS games will be fought, within the urban areas, as well as Wo89 combats as well in the countryside areas.
the layout will be around the walls of the room, with a central wargames table integrated to provide a 'country side' are of combat.

I would like to thank all of the members who have supported my N guage modelling, though now no longer on the forum, but a new group of friends will help with the construction, and use, of the new area.
and, of course, unfortunately, no longer any hairy beast donations to the landscape.

Quote from: martyn on February 06, 2025, 05:01:14 PMThanks very much for this, Stu.

It's a subject on which a short series rather like the 'Beginners guide to steam locos' would make interesting reading.

I'm aware of some of this, but thanks for the actual examples given.

Wasn't another restriction in length dependent upon the length of refuge sidings available on a given route?

Thanks again.

Martyn

Thanks @martyn!

The 'Beginners guide to Freight Trains' series does sound like a good idea. Think I might leave it until I I've sorted the 3rd Version of my Magazine out.

Loop length is an interesting one. The loops/refuge sidings are listed in the documents, but they do have a length in a number of wagons against them. Some even had calling on signals on the signal that lead into the loop, so more than one train could be put into the same line.

I've not seen anything that shows that train length was restricted by loops/refuge sidings, but the fact that its listed would indicate it was more of a regulatory issue. So this would be to do with Control making sure that a freight would fit in the siding, especially if the freight was being 'looped' as it was going to get in the way of a faster train coming up behind it.

I think "Relayer" was a breath of fresh air after the excesses of "Tales of Topographic Oceans" - I don't think I have ever listened to in it's entirety but parts of "Ritual - Nous Sommes du Soleil" are rather pleasant from memory.

I read that Rick Wakeman got so bored during the recording process that that he gave some of his time free of charge to Black Sabbath who were recording "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" at the same time in Studio 4 at Morgan. Rick was paid in beer by Black Sabbath and consequently left Yes (for a while) unhappy with "ToTO".

Cheers,

Tim

Another 'Yes' morning, with pride of lace going to 'Tales from Topographic Oceans'
I've always really rated discs 1 and 2 but am still not entirely sure about 3 and 4 :hmmm:

Forum Ideas and Problems. / Re: BT/EE Users
Last post by Newportnobby - Today at 10:01:51 AM
@Tank I turned off my router overnight, turned it on this morning and..

LO AND BEHOLD - I'm using the laptop to access the forum and can do the same with my mobile via the router. :claphappy:
I had reset the router before but maybe didn't give it long enough to actually do anything.
Thanks for all your help and to everyone for their replies which I was going to use as ammunition against BT/EE who, surprise surprise, didn't even suggest resetting the router at all

That's very nice Tim @Moonglum and not someone I'm familiar with.
As you say, slight jazz/blues style there.
