I've just received an e mail purporting to be from HMRC to say I am due a tax refund and asking me to return a filled in P080-R form. This is an attachment on the mail from hmr.co.uk (note - not hmrc) and the attachment is P80-R.html - which I can't open anyway even if I wanted to.
What does the 'Collective' think, please?

Mick, sounds iffy to me.

I have some experience of these type of things, if you forward the email to me with a cheque for £350 I'll sort it all out for you.

@Newportnobby

Everything about it suggests fraud. You should be able to report it to a government agency  that investigates such matters.

Me too. The first thing to consider is whether or not HMRC actually have your email address, if not that's a dead giveaway - and I don't mean the supposed refund.

Definitely a scam.

HMRC use gov.uk as part of their web address.

I haven't had one this year phishing, but in previous years, it's been binned.

I did get a tax rebate earlier this year (Whoopee!!!) and it came as a cheque (Giro?) in the post, with no prior announcement.

Absolutely a scam.  These "tax refund" fake emails are well known.

Mick,
I totally disagree,
I think it is a refund of the tax you paid on the £1,000,000 your friendly Nigerian colonel paid you for helping him to get his funds out of the country.
there has obviously been a change in the rules.

Hi Mick just had to log in to reply to your post!

FWIW as someone that has been in contact on line with the IRS for many rears, from my experience ALL all their website page address's will start with: https://www.gov.uk/ followed by what ever department it is after the forward slash.

Hope that helps to settle things!  ::)

I've had a similar Email, the give away in my case was the date in American format.

Very scammy. Never even try and download attachments from things like this. Entirely possible that your "I can't open anyway" means that some virus has now  been unleashed on your system.

Mr Sprue

I can't believe this topic is still running! If the link doesn't start with 'https://www.gov.uk/' then it can't be trusted. Simple!

However if you encounter emails that try to emulate trusted sites then you should contact your email host, they can on your request carry out a reset which deletes the people who are tracking you. I recently did this with Yahoo which stopped the junk I was receiving almost immediately.
