I also forgot about the MOD using PFAs with 20' ISO containers, which would be of interest to Lawrence.

The frame design of the tanktainer is ideal for use with the 2 axle 20ft PFAs. The axleguards on these wagons projected about 6 inches above the floor level. The lower floor was intended to allow the taller coal containers to operate on gauge restricted routes from collieries but still contain a useful payload. Cutouts in the floor of the coal containers matched the projections of the axleguards.

Does anyone have any images of what the C-rail tanktainer kits look like delivered? I would be interested to know how much you have to do to these (transfers are a mission on their own) Has anyone considered doing these ready to run?

Rob H

I'll put pics up when mine are delivered if that helps,

Rob.
They say that love is more important than money but have you ever tried to pay a bill with a hug ?

It's not many parts, just as simple a kit as the PFAs, more parts in a 1:144 airfix spitfire 😊 there's also the etched walkways and ladders as an optional extra

Well, there was thread started on the Dapol Digest ( https://digest.dapol.co.uk/forum/n-gauge-models/accessories/containers/3932-tanktainers-rtr-in-n ) a year ago. But, it kinda fizzled out after only two days and three posts.

Not the best work I've ever done, but here is one of Arran's that I made earlier.
Drilled the bottom framing to fit locating pegs so as to load onto a Farish Freightliner wagon.....
I really should do the transfers sometime !

Reverse psychology could be applied by putting some transfers on before the kit is completed.

For my Stolt tanktainer I

Built the tank barrel and added the ends
Put the transfers on the barrel, including the silver/grey banding
Finished the frame around the barrel
Put the transfers on the ends and finally
Put on the walkway and ladder

Didn't fancy getting the banding right on a completed kit i.e. under the walkway so that's why I turned the whole process on its head.

Sometimes it pays to remember that you don't have to follow the rules.

westie7

Yeah I agree this is the best way, especially with the silver bands.

@mickster04
Here's a quick pic of the frets as they come. You need two frets to make up one tanktainer, although you wont need all the parts.

It would be quite nice if there were some walkway etches that we could use instead of the plastic lump that come with the kit. Any ideas anyone?

Take a piece of kitchen aluminium foil and place it over the walkway. Brush gently with a small paintbrush to copy the relief to the foil. Make a thin copy of the walkway in 0.25mm plasticard and smear the upper surface of this with Pritt stick or similar. Lay the sticky side of the plasticard onto the underside of the foil image so it is fully adhered. Let it dry for an hour or two. Spray with aerosol car accessory primer. Let it fully dry. Then cut round the new foil covered plasticard shape to reveal your new thinner walkway. OK it is a bit of work but once primed this should give a finer appearance.

This ribbed roof was made in this way in 1992 and 25 years on is still going strong.

Hi @westie7 I know there are walkways on he fret, theyre the E shape on the frets. But Im asking if there are etched brass walkways which would be much finer. Are you saying that c rail sell etched walkways?
