Just an idea which popped into my miniscule mind - we have a map of where members live (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=675.msg5622#msg5622), how about a map of where layouts are located - not physically, but the location they're based on, though obviously that wouldn't apply to entirely fictitious layouts.
[smg id=4578 type=preview align=center width=400]
Not so much a collection of maps/trackplans but a map like the members' map where you can see where layouts are based.
OK... but that's going to end up with a plethora of pins in the UK like the members map, and it would all have to be based on info from members, then put onto Google maps. Quite a big job for the team, methinks.
A nice idea, but possibly impractical - let's see what members think!
George
Yup, like I said just an idea, thought I'd note it down before I forget
Hi Railsquid,
Like the idea but as Bealman says there would be a map problem.
Was just thinking (out loud :worried:) What about a list of counties that people who model them could put their member name against so others of similar interest (suppose more scenery wise rather than era) would know where to look for inspiration.
Countries, with specific areas from the member, as well, in a separate section otherwise I'm out the game.
I think there's a what/where do you model thread but if it was a list, people could dip in and out. I dunno. Maybe talking rubbish and just been told I've got to take the dogs out and buy a chicken
weave.
Yeah... chickens are easier and cheaper to look after than dogs ;D

Sorry off topic but wish I could swap them as pets.
Bought the chicken and other stuff at the farm shop as had to go there for aquarium stuff for SWMBO's hobby. Took the dogs to the field opposite (hadn't been before) which is used for car boot sales as nothing there.
Thought great, not car boot sale time of year and all done in one hit. Didn't take long to realise
why.
Big bogs, filthy, really stinky dogs and (I know it doesn't rhyme) but lots of earache when I got home. Had borrowed her car too
Chicken was nice though ;)
:laughabovepost: :laughabovepost:
Did that with our labrador once... I copped similar flak
Hi,
Sounds a great idea in theory but I wonder why it would be needed to balance the investment in resources. I imagine it woukd take allot of time / effort and only as relible as the input and I'm not sure what the benefit would be other than a nice to have? Google is a fantastic thing -you can search almost anything you like appending .ngaugeforum or rmweb or the likes etc. If you want to find a region or era it's just so way easy now to use google or the relavent forum search engines. Not knocking the idea (I guess I am though), but it seems like a heap of diverted effort for forum admins for something not going to be used much.
Rich
The advantage of a map would be that would be easier to discover layouts it hadn't occurred to you to search for. Say if you're modelling a station on a certain line, it'd be nice to be able to look on a map and see who else is modelling the area, otherwise you'd have to actively search every station on the line.
Anyway just throwing the idea out there, I appreciate it's a lot of work and certainly not demanding that the forum admin team jumps on it right away, but you never know, someone might like the idea enough to do something with it.
Actually, thinking about it a bit more, maybe I can come up with a solution myself independent of the forum
There's no reason that the forum admins have to enter all the data - just ask people with layouts to enter their own location.
Cheers, Mike
I'd have thought the simplest thing to do would be to start a thread asking the question "Is there anyone modelling xxxxxxxx?"
With respect to the OP, (and don't get annoyed at me Squiddy!) I don't really see the point in it.
I think it is very interesting in terms of general interest, with my exhibition manager's hat on and with my manufacturer's hat on. Knowing what people are (and aren't) modelling in terms of period and location is incredibly useful and interesting information.
Cheers, Mike

Yup, something like that crossed my mind. We'd definitely be looking at some sort of mainly user-editable database, i.e. not part of the forum; technically doable, just a case of doing it and seeing if it gains traction. And finding the time of course. :hmmm:

Actually, you could really go to town on this. You could have a different layer for each era/epoch/decade.
(but don't ask me how: I'm more of an ideas rat :D)
So I hope I haven't overstepped my bounds and if I have, Tank or any other moderator, feel free to let me know, but I went ahead and created a GoogleMap for this purpose: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zva4k8UFbyr0.k1smbk9GVSsU&usp=sharing (https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zva4k8UFbyr0.k1smbk9GVSsU&usp=sharing)
It is open for now so that you can add your own layout and a description (please don't remove/edit other people's locations!). If you can't figure out how to add your layout, pm me your location and layout name and a picture (send photos as a link, please) if desired and I will post it for you.
I have wanted to do this for a while, so I hope everyone enjoys :D
As for layers for different eras, for now I think we should put our dates in the location description and worry about breaking it out into layers if/when we have more than 50 or so locations added, but if this is something everyone wants right away, I don't mind doing it :D
EDIT: For those wanting to add their layout to the map, see reply 36 below for instructions and PM me if you need help.
I, for one, think that this is quite a good idea but can't quite figure out how to add my own layouts (PM sent).
I think we do need to be able to search by area/era. For example, "I want to find a 1950/1960 layout representing North Cornwall".
Hopefully, we can build on this and create a useful resource,
I've marked my layout at its real location, interesting to see another layout set fairly nearby.

Will try again tonight to see what my computer has done and what you've done and hopefully contribute.

Since you can change the colour of the teardrop symbol, why not use this to denote the era?

The earlier link should take you to the edit page for the map. Not sure what it asks for the login as I specifically told it you don't need to be logged in to view or edit the map. This link should take you straight to the map and not require login: NGF Layout Locations

The wife uses the computer when her work one is not available or charged and cocks it up for me as I'm not computer literate and it sometimes does strange things (and so does the computer :D). So unfortunately in order to add locations it seems you have to be logged in. Anyone who doesn't have access to a google account should PM me the following information:
1. Layout Name
2. Layout locations (this can be coordinates or a rough description including the nearest town and preferably the county)
3. A VERY brief description including the approximate dates and the company/companies modeled.
4. A link to a photograph of the layout, if desired.
Anyone who DOES have access to a google account should follow these steps to posting a location:
1. Click on https://goo.gl/maps/X7K5tnqbhRv (https://goo.gl/maps/X7K5tnqbhRv) and log-in
2. Click on the blue edit button on the left-hand side above the list of places.
3. Either searching in the bar at the top of the map or clicking and zooming, find the location you wish to mark.
4. Click on the "Add Marker" icon, which is located below the search bar, between the picture of the hand and the incomplete triangle, and has a picture of the same markers used on the map (somewhat like an inverted teardrop).
5. At this point the marker should appear and a little box with it that will say "Point ##," which you should change to your layout name. Below this is a small box for describing your layout (include dates and companies/regions if possible). There is also a camera icon in the bottom right hand corner of this box which you can click to add a link to a picture of your layout. When you are finished, select SAVE, and your layout is marked on the map!
Hope this helps!!!!

Hi there N-gauge US.
Thanks for setting this up - what a great idea.
I have added Horseley Fields with a photo.
The teardrop for the layout is yellow and I could not work out how it was selected or how to change it.
Having the teardrops coloured to denote era seems like a decent idea to me, though I guess that would be quite a bit of work for you?
If it helps, our layout is 2000+ so pretty much Era 9 and (if it is now in widespread use) Era 10.
cheers

No problem, Ben! This got brought up on the "map of forum members' locations" thread a while back and no one seemed keen to make it, even if they wanted to see it. Since essentially all of the work is done by the contributors and not by the person who sets it up, I thought I would take on the "burden." ;)
Everyone seems to like the color coordinated era or layer themed by era, so I will do my best to start tackling that in the immediate future. :) I may wind up PMing some of you if I can't easily find your layout thread or an indication of your period, so that everyone gets sorted. Once I do, I'll have it display a key so that everyone can know what they are seeing and I will include that here as well as instructions on how to change the color of your marker :)

Hi Philip,
Well done for doing this - I really like your "can do" approach!!
I have put Deansmoor and Lofthole up. The "Google Search" was a bit weird for photographs :confused1: - I have some better ones but couldn't work out how to find them! Never mind!
To save you having to PM me, Deansmoor is (or will be) mainly Era 9, maybe back to 8
Lofthole is 9

Thanks very much, Jon!
The picture stuff is a bit weird. I would recommend using the URL option instead of the Google search to find your photos. That way you can just pop a link (even to a picture in the forum) right into it and it pops up. Why it won't let you upload a picture is beyond me, but if you have it anywhere else you can simply insert the link like I said and Presto!
Hope this helps!

Hi Philip,
Please help. Sorry but am so crap with computers. Have managed to put the location in and thought I'd put the layout name which is 'PORT REGLEUN' but it comes up as point 20, presumably the 20 th member.
I'll try and alter it tomorrow but if you could do that if it's easy I'd be very grateful as will probably erase it knowing my luck and ability.

An update on the color sorting situation!
I have gone through and sorted most of the layouts into a few categories by period. Since many of us model "on the cusp of two periods" there are some combined categories. The categories and colors are as follows:
Eras 1-2: 1804 - 1875 Pioneering (Unrepresented thus far, no color assigned) and 1875 - 1922 Pre-Grouping
(Unrepresented thus far, no color assigned)
Era 3: 1923 - 1947 The Big four - LMS, GWR, LNER and SR (Represented by Green)
Eras 4-5: 1948 - 1956 British Railways Early Crest and 1957 - 1966 British Railways Late Crest (Represented by Black)
Era 6: 1967 - 1971 British Railways Blue Pre Tops (Represented by Blue)
Era 7: 1971 - 1982 British Railways Blue Tops era (Unrepresented thus far, no color assigned)
Era 8: 1982 - 1994 British Railways Sectorisation (Unrepresented thus far, no color assigned)
Era 9: 1995 onwards - Post Privatisation (Represented by Magenta/Purple)
If your layout is not marked as one of these colors, I didn't forget you, I just didn't know where to put you. Some of you are modeling non-British proto-types and it seems unreasonable to sort those by British Railway Era. If I have incorrectly marked the color of your layout, you can change it by entering the edit section as you did to place the marker and then doing the following:
1. After entering the "edit" area, find your layout name in the list on the lefthand side of the page.
2. Hover your mouse over the name and you should see an icon that is a diamond that is partially shaded in with a pencil to the far right of the name, click on this icon.
3. Select the color you wish your icon to be.
If you have any problems doing that, please PM me and I will take care of it for you! (Just please remember to tell me which layout is yours and what color you want it to be!)
-Philip

I believe you are our first Era 8 layout on the map, so yellow should be just dandy :) Still have to get around to ironing out a few kinks, but I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying it :) I certainly enjoy seeing where people's layouts are (especially since most
English British place names are somewhat abstract to me!).
Thanks to everyone for posting their layouts :)
I think you should substitute "English place names" with "British place names" to avoid offending the Celtic fringe ;)
Seriously, glad people like this idea and thanks to N-Gauge-US for the implementation. It's certainly interesting to put a general location to layouts in unfamiliar parts of the country.
I put the Round the Room location on there, I hope it has worked....
I may be your first Banger Blue 1970s spot :)
This reminds me I need a name for at least some of it !

In the event I did offend, apologies; although, in my defense, my surname is McCray and I spend part of my (non-train) spare time learning (amongst other dead tongues) Old Irish, so I think accusations of anti-Celtic sentiment on my part would probably not hold up to much scrutiny ;)
On a more serious note, I am at my old apartment moving things right now and don't generally have a laptop here, but have borrowed one to add the layouts of a few people who had PMed me. If you did send me a private message asking for me to post your layout, it should be done now. If it is not, PM me again as I have obviously missed you somehow. If there are any changes you want to see made to your layout location, let me know and I will fix whatever needs fixing. Still having trouble getting it to display a full compliment of colors and to give the full locations list on the left instead of an abbreviated one (all locations should be visible on the actual map, with their names.). I promise I will try to work on that some next week when my world returns to normal.
As always, thanks to everyone who has added their layout to this project; it is a very exciting look at the variety we capture, both spatially and temporally, as modelers.
Anyone who can't figure out how to add their layout from the instructions above, just send me the information and I will take care of it for you and let you know when it is done.
Thanks again and all the best

Thanks for adding 'Saneham Tey', Phillip.
It is a shame that this thread can't be made a bit more prominent or permanent near the top of an opening page, so that, as, eg Red Death has said, it would be interesting for some exhibition managers to look at the map when deciding what layouts to invite to exhibitions; it would give 'at a glance' information about the area/era(s)

Oops. I tried to add my model - Carmarthen to Cardiganshire - at Pencader, the central junction station. It came up as a red marker and when I used the colour pallette to make it 1930s, I think it changed all the other red markers to green. :dunce:

Grrrr.... The answer is, I'm not sure. I can give you the cheating answer, which is to put a number or symbol in front of your layout name, which catapults it to the top of the list, pushing someone else down to the 'Other' section, which isn't exactly ideal. Ultimately, the layouts are all displayed the same way on the map and it is only in the key that they get awkwardly grouped, but it is a source of frustration for me and something
still on my 'to solve' list of problems.
Also, thanks to everyone who has posted their layout recently! It has gotten quite exciting in some areas :) Scotland still looks very barren and the north seems quite lightly serviced, but it is exciting to see NZ and the ROI lit up :)
Just added mine. As the layout covers three areas it's got three markers. Managed to add a picture for each location okay.

Motive power mostly Steam
Notes, the layout actually was built on Tiree, now being restored and modified to be more Tiree like. While now residing in Norfolk.

Just added The Coniston Railway - where the models are, not the originals which are a few miles away ;)
I'm on there but forget how you see it as I'm a :dunce: and :beers: lover.
Please remind me.
Thanks weave.

I found it by going the the forum menu bar, hovering my mouse over the NGF Links category and choosing Members Layouts Map. That opens a thread Map of Layout Locations (ah, this thread actually) at post 19 on page 2, which includes a link to open the map in a new window.
Was unaware of this thread. Just stuck Saxon Street onto it. Somewhere vaguely in Kent where you could see both red and green buses ;D
Alec.
Thanks @chrism (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=7182),
I thought it was a good idea at the time. I'd actually forgotten about it but still think it's a nice idea and maybe someone could resurrect it in a more user friendly fashion. I would but am no good with computers so if anyone out there is bored one day that would be great.
I still need to put my Principat d'Izaro layout on there to widen the geography a bit more.
Cheers weave :beers:
I too had forgotten all about that.
Trepol Bay is on there but at my house not its actual location on the North Coast of Cornwall.
Not sure if the map is meant to show actual or fictional locations?
Hi Martin,
I presumed it was the location of the fictional layout not where one lives.
Anyway, the more we talk about it the more members will know about it. I've now got to go back and remember how to do it .
Cheers weave :beers:

Good point. I've now moved mine to about halfway along the line - however, I must stress that The Coniston Railway is
not fictional :D

Yes, that's right.

Under 'NGF Links' there is the 'Members Global Map' which is for where you live (not the exact location for obvious reasons) and the 'Members Layouts Map' which should be used to locate your layout e.g. I have one near Oxford and one on the Cambs/Beds border
Thank you,
I've never ever looked at NGF Links . I'm sorry for being a complete numbnuts :sorrysign:
Cheers weave :beers:

Don't worry mate, until yesterday nor had I ;)
Has this map been taken down?
when I click on the link, I go to the map page and the group name is shown but there is no content.
Am i doing something wrong.
I've just looked as well and I can't see anything. :( I'm not sure what's happened.
I can't see it either but....Welcome Aboard MoDancer.
Welcome to the forum MoDancer. If Tank does not know what has happened, it's a "Houston, we have a problem" moment again! :)
(Okay, for the pedants, I know the quote is not strictly accurate).
Hmm, I totally forgot about this. I think another member created the map and it was probably associated with their Google setup, and it has probably bitrotted into non-existence. :hmmm:

Chris - while you're at it, you should check your own below-the-line signature section. I'm not sure what images used to be there, but all I see now are three error messages "Sorry, you are not allowed to view this file. Make sure you are connected to the server", just FYI
Is this it https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=31285.0 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=31285.0) ?

I get that on numerous members posts. :hmmm:

Well done. Moorpark added.
There's summat not right as loads of layouts (including my two) are not shown any more ???

This is a new map, I believe. The old one went to the great bitbucket in the sky.
That's funny, I'm on there, right down to Chez Bealman!
I don't remember putting myself on there, though.
At the moment I have the whole continent of Australia to meself. Bealman rules OK :D
Oh no I'm not now! My brief dictatorship was extemely short-lived! :'(
So I dunno wots going on there.
You planted your flag first, George. In the great spirit of colonialism, the continent belongs to you. Just change the name to Bealstralia and no-one will argue. (Well, plenty of people will argue but, let's face it, planting a flag means Righful Possession). Just ask Eddie Izzard

*Emerging from the mists* I set this up ages ago and forgot all about it. The account it is associated with has stayed active continuously and I do not know why it seems to have dumped the huge number of points that were previously on it (Close to 80 at one point, if I remember correctly). I can promise I didn't actively delete it, but google seems to have decided I didn't need that content anymore. My apologies gents and ladies. I notice some points have been (re-)added to it. I don't know if there's anything I can do to recover the older points or make it more user friendly (as some others have requested), but I will look into both things today and try to get back to you with an answer.

Google did a huge update to their Maps software a while ago and a lot of sites & users lost their data. There was/is a site dedicated to mapping WW2 Defensive buildings that took years to compile and they lost the lot. When queried apparently Google just shrugged it off. Their pitch (let alone ball!), their rules I suppose.
