Title: NGF Photographic Competition 2014
Post by: Newportnobby on April 30, 2014, 10:41:03 AM
The NGF is holding a photographic competition for the second time - a great chance for you to get snapping and enter.
Due to hosting issues, the competition will not open until the transfer to the new host has been made (estimated 1st May) and only then will the relevant galleries be created for you to upload your entries to.The prize will be a 'virtual' prize entered against your name on the forum so it will reside with you until the next one and let the N gauge world know you are an expert with your camera. We are pleased to announce that Steve Flint, editor of Railway Modeller, will be the sole and final judge of the competition, but there are rules to be strictly observed please.

Rules

1.Photos must be railway or model railway related (there are separate boards in the media file)
2.Photos must be your own work.
3.There is a strict limit of 2 photos per person (if more are posted the post will be deleted and you will have to resubmit)
4.Photos must not exceed 500kb.
5.A 12 word allowance is given for type of camera used, date photo taken and location
6.No comments about the photos can be accepted from other members (they will be deleted!)
7. Closing date is 31st July 2014

Please remember the photo itself is being judged and not the subject.

How to enter

Ensure that your photographs are less than 500kb in size. Photographs will not load if the size is bigger

There are two galleries - one for Model Railway photos and the other for Real Railway photos. Ensure you upload your photo to the correct gallery. Enter brief details about the camera and date and location into the description box (about 12 words or less)

If you need help with picture resizing or uploading to the gallery then consult our Help Pages

Sorry about not allowing comments but we need clear boards for Steve to be able to look at so as to make his job as easy as possible  :thankyousign:

Most of all - enjoy!
:photospleasesign: :thankyousign:

Hi Everyone

The galleries are now to be found in the media section so when you think you have your entries ready (no more than 2 per person over the 2 galleries!) feel free to post them in the relevant gallery. Entries must be limited to still photographs - for full rules please see the OP and, if you have any questions, drop me a PM please.
I'd suggest you only post your entries when you're sure it/they have a chance of winning ;)

 :bump:

I know the deadline is 31st July, but we only have 4 entries in the model railway section and none in the real railway section, despite seeing folks have been out and about to steam/diesel galas etc.
Come on, folks.  :photospleasesign:

Hi,

Can you confirm the number of photos per person. Is it two in total or two per gallery?

Just added one to the 'Real Section' - not done much 'pretty' modeling this year, but I have been to loads of railways these last few months, enjoying the sunshine, a few beers ( :beers:)  and taking photo's  :camera:....

Still got the little trains of Wales to do yet, but thats not till September.

If you don't have any photo editing software, try uploading it to something like Farcebook. Then it will automatically be compressed for you. Download that version and then upload it here.

Stupid question, how do I resize my photo so it will let me upload it into the sections?

For those M$ Widnows [sic] users amongst us:

1) Load picture in Picture Viewer (double click on the picture thumbnail and it should open in Picture Viewer as default).
2) Click on 'Paint' in the 'Open' menu at the top of the page.
3) Paint will open, click on 'Resize' in the toolbar at the top.
4) Make sure 'Maintain aspect ratio' box is ticked. Change either the horizontal or vertical percentage (the other one will change automatically). The percentage you want will depend on the original size of the picture, so a bit of trial and error will be needed as Paint will not easily tell you what the bytesize of the picture is until you save it (see 6)).
5) Save the picture under another name (so you don't overwrite the original sized picture).
6) Check in Paint Menu/Properties to see what the bytesize is now ('Size on Disk'). If you need to reduce more, then undo the resize and use a smaller percentage number then resave.
7) Once you're happy with the picture as it is now, and it meets the size restriction, upload the new version of the picture to Tank's album.

It doesn't have to be N (but of course we prefer that)
It's the photo which is being judged, not the gauge

Just 2 and a bit days to go now, folks.
Please remember only 2 entries per person total, not per section
We'll be locking the sections down on the morning of 1st August and then your photo's fate will be in the hands of our esteemed judge, Steve Flint, editor of Railway Modeller magazine.

I'm evidently as thick as the proverbial two planks, 'cos everyone-else  has apparently submitted their entries successfully,  but try as I may, I cannot find any place to place my photo.  I've read and re-read the instruction and checked the galleries for 'something' (without knowing what I am looking for BTW), but exactly WHERE do I place the two 'layout'  images  I want to submit?

Thanks.

If you go to 'Albums' in the Media section, you will see a folder 'Photographic Competition 2014 - Model Railways'.

Bealman:

Thank You; much appreciated.

Mods / admins:

I have entered two images in the Photographic Competition 2014, but for unknown reasons could not initially see either of them.  AFAIK the image size was  in conformance with what was required by the software. An attempt to resubmit has left me with one image (The Trammer within the Poppett Head) visible and two images as 'blind/ blank squares.  Evidently others of the membership can however see these 'blind' images. I unfortunately am unable to delete the 'blind' images to start-over, so can you please delete the duplicated image and advise if I need to re-submit the other one.

Sorry about that; not sure why / how it has occurred.

Hoping that you can help, and thanks in advance.

Are we still adhering strictly to the one picture per category? I think there's still some confusion there.

You may have two in the same category if you wish.

However, you may not have two in each category.

As soon as the closing date was reached, access details were sent to Steve Flint but he's been a way for a few days so probably has a lot to catch up on work-wise.
I'm hoping we'll have the decisions by the end of this month.

OK Folks,

The results are through from Steve Flint (comments are his) as follows:-

Real Railways

Winner

87002 and 87001 at Stafford entered by Tutenkamunsleeping

(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/43/thumb_14315.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=14315)

This is both colourful and striking, good traditional railway composition.

Highly Commended

Strathspey Railroad August 2000 entered by Keerout

(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/44/thumb_13586.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=13586)

An unusual viewpoint and composition on a heritage railway, where getting an original shot or angle is often hard to achieve.

Model Railways

Winner

86436 approaching Kirkholme with the mail entered by SD35

(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/45/thumb_13493.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=13493)

Although the photo is technically weak (ie lacking in depth of field), this eye-catching and life-like composition for a model train in action makes for a great image

Highly Commended

37688 on Bidgebury Gate entered by Russell H

(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/43/thumb_14385.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=14385)

Same comments as above really, again thoughtful composition looking down the train pulls it off.

Huge Congratulations to the winners & runners up, and thanks to everyone who took part in this years competition. We hope to run this again next year.

The Winners of each category will have their 'virtual awards' posted next to their avatar as soon as it can be arranged.
