Title: Dapol Announcement- 18/7/12 0900 BST
Post by: scruff on July 15, 2012, 09:22:45 PM
Hi guys,

I never saw any mention of this announcement on here so I thought I'd open the can of worms..

Dapol are announcing their plans for the rest of 2012 and also 2013 at 0900 bst on wednesday morning. The catalogue is also supposed to be released simultaneously..
Collectors club members are getting a free copy..

Fingers crossed it happens because I can't wait to find out what new toys new models we can expect! ;D

Cheers

Mark

I am hoping it is a particularly "rough" time for WR modellers. :D

Here's hoping for a Castle!

Doubley excited about wed as will be getting a call back from a job too

Will be great to see if they have any news on the 142, its the main thing im waiting for at the moment from them, unless something new takes my fancy at the time of this new announcement.

Will be great to see if they have any news on the 142,

Wonder if they'll make it really realistic and have it de-rail or drop bits of engine on a regular basis?  :smiley-laughing:

Full list now available on RMWeb. Rather than repeat the list I will just link to it. Suffice it to say that SR modellers and to a lesser extent GWR modellers will be well pleased with the N gauge lineup.

QuoteNew this year is the ability for stockist to buy their locomotives (where marked) DCC fitted as we will be able to supply these models with a Gaugemaster DCC23 on board. This is a first for British N gauge and DCC fitted locomotive boxes will be specially marked to avoid confusion.

Excellent!  I only use the DCC23 on my layout.

Great news about the 59 and especially the 50's.   :beers:

Its good to see some more Mk3s - but whilst there are more FGW coaches and buffet cars in most liveries, there is no FGW buffet car on the list. Still won't be able to run a complete FGW HST.

I think it is fair to say that any old Farish tooling where a 00 equivelent is in the Hornby catalogue is fair game for Dapol. The existence of the Hornby model means Bachmann are unlikely to do a 00 model so an N gauge version is also unlikely.

I wonder if Bachmann knew about the Dapol Panniers and were trying to squeeze as much as possible out of their model by issuing them a few months back with the new chassis?

Dapol Dave's going to be a busy boy. I wonder if he'll be getting any development help like an assistant. Otherwise it could be a long wait for some things to go through development, wait for a production slot and then the long sea voyage. And have they made a bit of a rod for their own backs? I guess they'll be bombarded with "what's the latest", "when's it due" and "what's happening about the xx" questions now.

But those doubts aside it's a great N gauge list, especially for me.  It looks like a decades worth of Christmasses have come at once. And no doubt it will be a popular list for many others.

I look forward to getting and reading a copy of the brochure. Anyone know where it will be on sale? Smiffs and other newsagents or just a few specialist Dapol listed model shops?

H.

I think that model shops that carry Dapol will carry the catalogue. Hattons are selling it.

I am partcularly looking forward to 33, 50, sevaral Westerns and the O gauge 08.

Well done :Dapol:

First thing I did was ctrl-f and search for Pendolino and it does come up with something but I can't tell if they're producing a set or just dining coaches.

Edit: It must be! It's under train sets category. BOSS!

Edit2: This has made me well happy because I was tempted to try OO just to have this train but decided to do the sensible thing and bide my time.

Still, a good selection, just not much I'm fussed by!

Sorry Mr Grumpy, Dapol are unlikely to produce the Pendolino in the near future - it has been on their back burner since the dawn of time. The reason is likely to be costs, as each car is different, and also worries as to whether it will sell. Farish won't do one as they say Dapol are going to do one.

With proposals for running modified 140mph Pendolinos on the East Coast line, hopefully someone will produce one - all we can do is keep nudging the manufacturers, it was top of our N Gauge EMU poll results and I'd buy one (even though I have kept my OO Pendolino and an oval of Kato HO track)

In my subsequent google searches today I found the thread where you discussed this previously. It's a mystery to me why they're not more popular. I hope that the current EMUs on sale sell well so we get what we want.  I'd love to get a 3D printer and set up shop selling modern/futuristic supplies but I guess you have to have some strength to push new things like that on to the market. It's not like there is a great existing market in the UK. We all seem obsessed with steam and the countryside (which is fair enough, just not my cup of tea at all).

They are a fixed-rake mainline train that runs on one route in a single livery. Only useful if you are modelling the WCML post-2001. Even the Blue Pullmans covered a wider territory as well as getting around a bit on specials. I hope OHEL fans get a Pendolino and smoe other EMUs sooner rather than later but I can see why Dapol are cautious.

Very much horses for courses. If you are going to run long, fixed-rake stock with minimal shunting then N gauge is the obvious scale to choose. I tried modelling the WCML (sectorisation era) in 00 many years ago and that was a real challenge. There was less stock then than there is N gauge now. I can see the appeal of the prototype though.

Regarding 3D printing, I believe Captain Electra has some 313s in the pipeline so that will help at least if you are modelling south of Watford Junction. ;)

Starter sets from dapol??????? May invest in one of their DCC ones, although neither are of much interest really, which is a shame, but for the controller may be worth it.

Also the 142 looks like it could be a great catch. still haha. (i know its a hard thing to like)

and £199 for an 08????  :o

For a 7mm 08, which is a magnitude cheaper than most 7mm RTR or kits! By the time it is discounted by the box shifters expect it to be £160-170.

OK I am not a modeller of the Southern/Western scemnes, but this lot is clearly wonderful, and expensive, news for them.  Dapol have been imaginative in going for those.  And I am pleased there are some happy people around.  I will ensure my Southern inclined club treasurer has a full wallet.

As a Scottish modeller I will major on the already announced 27.  I only replaced my ancient Minitrix with a Heritage resin kit 3 years ago!  And turned a G/F 33 into a 26.

I'm actually pretty good at 3D modelling and I saw this (http://blog.makezine.com/2012/05/07/smoothing-fused-filament-prints/) today which made printing with a home 3D printing setup seem more viable. When I get one (not if, when) I would definitely be willing to give it a go.  The result would be lacking finer details but I guess they could be added in.  One thing I have no idea of is how to design for a specific scale or chassis so any links you 3D printer interested people have would be more than welcome here.

I think that designing the shells and submitting to shapeways could be a false economy in the long run if I want to save for a 3D printer.

Depends on the tools being used, but if its one that works in abstract units like Blender then the usual approach is to work on the basis that 1 blender unit = 1mm and then 2mm = 1ft (1:152). You can see at this point why fine scale modellers use sensible ratios rather than 1:148 !

For N its 103% of the size  but the same theory applies.

You can design to prototype dimensions but they you need to scale up things like wall thicknesses so they are 148mm thick etc for 1mm in the model.

The other big difference to 3D models for games etc is that they need to be properly manifold and complete. You can't just omit bits you can't see or have things with no  inside when actually printing them.

I've seen a few ways to smooth fused deposition prints, one of the most insane used by some of the arty folks is to done appropriate protective breathing gear and airbrush the ABS print with acetone ! You can get jewellry stone polishers which for the most part are too harsh but you can load them with soft plastic pellets which for stones are used for the final surface polish up.

PLA is the one that's a pain for this - its a great printing material but its co-efficient of friction is so high that it simply melts onto sandpaper as you scrape it. In that case things like dipping it in pva/water/washing up liquid mix are about the best you can do.

I have one of those but I would not put any kind of hollow object in there. It might work well for a solid printed object but if you put anything like a bodyshell though it you would end up with a lot of small bits.

It makes sense in many ways. Farish are clearly focussing on the LMS prototypes and Dapol have recently given the LNER some love. I think it is a fine balance in that they need to give each group enough releases to build workable layouts without bleeding them dry or neglecting other areas.

Lots of goodies to buy, well done Dapol especially for the new 57xx and re-releasing the 14xx and auto coach, my staple diet.  Feel sorry for all those people who've paid fortunes on Ebay for the previous versions    :smiley-laughing:

Right well my pre-order list has just increased!

I'll take a couple of panniers, a schools, a fleet of maunsells, a 59, many many wagons and most likely a 33 and a 50 or 3!

I think that designing the shells and submitting to shapeways could be a false economy in the long run if I want to save for a 3D printer.

Personally I think for the moment submitting to a 3rd party printer is the only sensible way to do things if you want reasonable resolution and finish.  If the cost becomes prohibitive then print one or two and cast them in resin.  The resolution and finish of 3D printers will increase to a point, but the real problem for the hobbyist is the capital cost of the machine - you can still pay a fair chunk of money for something without the resolution. I have no doubt the printers will eventually drop to a reasonable price, it is just a question of what that timescale is!

In terms of scaling the model - I use Blender and use 1 blender unit = 1mm of the model dimension so say something is 10m long in real life then scale that down by 1:148 and it gives you 67.6mm (or 67.6 blender units).

Cheers, Mike

(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-eatdrink009.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) before I have to start saving, 2 in Southern livery! a set of Maunsells and then there's the pannier, Oh my wallet!

Got to say a big announcement, loads of products in various scales including some right at the top of NGF's very own wish list.

The Pannier looks lovely and is clearly "on the boat". I suspect the people at Barwell will be less than happy with that announcement, but business is business I guess....

For me though, to be truthful, overall a bit of a disappointment, I had hoped that the most neglected of models, the LNER tank loco might have been included somewhere.

Even the releases of A3s carry names that are of no interest to me (I already have second "Lemberg" on the way to renumber to one more suitable for a Waverley Route layout).

So, my money is safe, seems though that I am very much a minority...

Not just the Schools, but also the coaches to go with it - and go with the Bullieds (both the Pacifics and the coaches announced by Farish). Indeed some of those coaches lasted for yonks as tool/riding vans for breakdown cranes.

I'd be grateful if anyone can share some .blend files with me that they're not bothered about me messing around with so I can give it a go myself.

I'd love to learn how to clone things using resin.  To print my modern-era 3D models and share them with you all would be awesome.

Having just seen a feature on local TV (Meridian) about the Hitachi trains that are going to be running on the Greater Western franchise, I think the way forward is going to be to modify the Kato bullets (for us that like the fast EMUs)

Class 22, 33 and 50 for me to go with the 27, 52 and 56 previously announced but not yet here. Let's hope they are a little spaced out to stop the wallet being totally empty. ;D

All in all, great additions to the DCC ready BR Blue stable and a totally new loco to RTR N (the 22).

Really hope that the Blue Grey 125 is re-released soon.  :)

The reductions comparative to RRP at Hattons don't seem to be hugely generous, shame Rails haven't announced their prices yet, I'll hang on for a little while to see what they come up with before I put in my pre-orders... ;)

Nice list- and happily for my wallet, no surprises that I might want to actually buy (other than Bittern in the second release of A4s0.  Still a Flying Fox and a Grand Parade will make a bit of a hole in the wallet, but allow me enough for a WD or two from t'other lot.

I can imagine what George Smith would have said about me getting a new pannier and painting it LMS red or Navy Blue with NCB on the side.....

All the very best

Am i the only person who can see a layout based on Westbury come to mind. With Dapols 33,50,56 and 59 and HST and farishs 08,37,47,60 108 and 150 Westbury around 1991/1992 could be an interesting proposition so much so ive worked out that only modelling roads 1-6 of the down yard and half of the south yard you can get it all in to 16ft! Almost makes me want to get back into N gauge!

A good choice of  :A1Tornado: and  :Class37: engines there. And the surprise being a SCHOOLS! I voted for this one in the NGF pole so its great to see it there.

The O gauge Terrier is, like the 08 announced earlier, another good choice, I think it'll sell well especially as there's wagons to boot.

I won't be buying any of them at the moment  :( and to make sure I'm not tempted my wallet has gone into hiding and put a restraining order on me! :o  :smiley-laughing:

There's some good stuff in that catalogue. Who noticed 67003 in Arriva Blue to make an appearance?

I wonder if the matching Mk3s and DVTs will appear when the WAG rakes get upgraded? With my Electra hat on, I hope not!!

Really can't wait for the 33/1 in blue. The temptation to start turning out 4-TCs may be too great!

So, back on topic... last night she said well if you think you need 3 Westerns you'd better get them when they come out, coz you never know if they will make more.  How better can she show me she loves me than that?!?

For anyone wondering what the Dapol catalogue looks like..

Look here..

Thanks for that! Been looking for it everywhere.

Not much on there for me but really like the look of some of them. A nice selection. The one thing I am excited about it Sir Nigel Gresley! Does anyone know if they're making any changes to the A4s in this second lot?

None known, but I'm not convinced that ND128H Eisenhower in Apple Green isn't a misprint for Garter Blue....

Gresley is in the right condition for 1965 ish to mid seventies and possibly a little after- suit people with Rail Blue period layouts.....

Interesting, thanks. I'm assuming that 'LNER Blue' is the blue livery she's currently in (preserved)? All the different blues get rather confusing. I thought it she was in Express Blue but clearly not.

On June 4th 2012 Sir Nigel Gresley was at York Railfest, painted in BR 1950 blue with early crest, numbered 60007.

I assume she's not been repainted since........

She is currently in BR Express Blue. The livery of this model is as it ran from 1966 until the 1990's, the preserved part of the title is referring to the fact it has the double chimney (fitted 1957) which would be incorrect for this model on a LNER era layout.

From Ollie- "the preserved part of the title is referring to the fact it has the double chimney (fitted 1957) which would be incorrect for this model on a LNER era layout."

Also to the fact that she was renumbered from 4498 to 7 in Jan 1947 while still in wartime black, so never ran as 4498 in blue without valances- the valances wre removed at the time (Jan 1942) when she was repainted from prewar blue into wartime black.

Swapping the chimney for a single one wouldn't give an actual variant without renumbering and renaming the loco.

All the very best
Les

Hi

R.E. Dapol A4 Silver Link.

My account was debited the money on 27th August 2012 but no loco has arrived yet. Only ordered it in March!!! It is a Dapol N'thusiast's Club item. Held up by livery problems I think. I hope mine is a decent runner when it comes - with good pick-up and a cool running motor but I do not have high hopes based on my recent A3 experience. That stopped running and awaits replacement by Dapol after being condemned by DCC Supplies.

Has anyone got their Silver Link yet?

Cheers

Nope; like you, still waiting (I ordered mine in January !!!) ...  I too hope it's a decent runner, but as DCC Supplies are reasonably close to me I don't mind popping over & seeing Fiona if it has problems (not had a chance to call in this year so far - must make the time !  Preferably without needing to !!!  :smiley-laughing:).

A little tempted on that Mallard - but as I've never touched Dapol before, I'm not going to jump in too far yet !

In regards to the two above posts, if dapol realize that there is a problem for running new A4's surely they would take the time to fix the problem before the silver link release, another possible reason for its delay?

You would think they'd do that regardless ... but that appears (from reading here & elsewhere) not to be part of their SOP ...  :veryangry:
