A while back in a discussion about Mk1 coaches someone mentioned a coupling which will reduce the somewhat extensive gap between coaches on the older GF design, unfortunately I can't find the thread.

Would part number "379-402" (e.g. listed here) be the coupling in question?

The ones in your link are for new coaches with NEM pockets, the thread I found was for older coaches with the sprung coupling

DCC Supplies also stock short rapidos for older stock with sprung couplings.

I've used Dapol short shank sprung Rapidos to shorted the gaps between old Farish stock (Mk4s in that case, but will work with Mk1s).

I'll second this. I have a couple of Russell's short-shank clear couplers and they certainly do the job.
