Here is 17 minutes of guitar heaven from the Dave Matthews Band featuring Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule and The Allman Brothers) performing Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer"...

Mick @Newportnobby might like this as well as John @Trainfish .

Cheers,

Interesting, Tim @Moonglum  :hmmm:
That's one of my all time favourite Neil Young tracks. It's different but, as I often say about music, unless it's a radically different version, I always prefer the 'originals'..
Witness 'House of the rising sun' from the Animals to the Frijid Pink effort, and Melanie's 'Ruby Tuesday' as opposed to the Stones

Zuma and Harvest are my two favourite Neil
Young albums.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

I guess that if you really like the original version Mike @Newportnobby , a cover version may or may not work for you. My very first single was "House of the Rising Sun" by Frijid Pink and I had never heard The Animal's version. Likewise, I had CCS's version of "Whole Lotta Love" as a single before I heard Led Zeppelin's original version and for a while preferred it! This might split opinions but I thought it was pretty good. Here is Gov't Mule's cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman", featuring Grace Potter...

Not so sure about Grace Potter's other work though.

Ooh, fighting words. ;)

When we first moved into a posh new council house in 1964, the next door neighbour's son played the Animals over and over.

I think at the time, it was the longest single ever played on radio!

Anyway, ever budding guitarist learns to play that, even today. I know I still play it!

And as for Led Zeppelin's Whole lotta love being the best, I ain't even going there. :beers:
Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

Just for the record (boom-boom) I was only 13 years old in 1970!

Tim

I'm with Tim @Moonglum on this.
I rather prefer Frijid Pink's version of House of the Rising Sun.
There are also plenty of cover versions of other songs that I prefer, including pretty much all cover versions of Dylan songs.
The Hollies Sing Dylan album is an excellent example of this.
I've just got in from a long day returning to our old cottage in Cornwall but I'll try to post some examples of great cover versions over the next few days.
As a starter for 10, which is the best version of Black Magic Woman written by Peter Green?

Cheers
Martin
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

Moonglum

For me it has to be Santana's "BMW", again I heard this before the Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green) original. Looking on the net there are many many covers of it and I do have this rather fine cover by Patricia Barber on her live CD "Companion"...

Sonically and recording wise it is an exceptional live CD from 1999. The guitarist though is not Santana.

Cheers,

Tim

PS Martin @port perran , I struggle with anything Bob Dylan unless Hendrix has a bash at it!

I once gave a CD copy of the Hollies sing Dylan to an avid Dylan fan, don't think he's ever got over it

I agree regarding Santana Tim, I believe it to be superior to the original.
I've never heard the Patricia Barber version before but I'm quite taken by it.
This is a jazz version by Janice Hagan that I rather like :

Wow Martin @port perran , that's good and the band swings! Patricia Barber does a cool sultry jazzy cover of The Doors' "Light my Fire"...

I prefer Neil Young's version of "Four Strong Winds" to the original.

Also, I prefer UB40's versions of "Kingston Town", "Red, Red Wine" and "Impossible Love" to the originals.

Newportnobby

For 'Black Magic Woman' it has to be Santana for me every time.
I find Dylan a bit like 'Marmite'. I tend to like him overall but some is pretty dire.
His 'Tweeter and the Monkey Man' on the 'Travelling Wilburys' is a wonder both musically and lyrically.
Biryani Ferret's (thanks to Charles Shaar Murray of the NME for that) album 'Dylanesque' varies from excellent to awful dependent on the track
