I didn't know I needed these transfers. Just read the item in the latest RM about loco coal wagons and guess what, I now need some! Non of the usual suppliers seem to have them. Any suggestion welcome. TIA John

I think you're going to need to give us a clue what you're talking about there...  :dunce:

Which transfers for which wagons?

In steam days, the railway companies often had dedicated wagons for carrying loco coal - they usually had the word "LOCO" on the side so that it was clear to the train marshalling staff that the wagons were to be sent to a loco coaling point rather than to the customer coal yard.

When I did some, I had to make up the required letters from bits of other letters/digits -  I had to use OO scale transfers to get a suitable size, cutting off parts of O's or 0's to make C's.

There's a ModelMaster sheet available from the N Gauge Society shop:

I have found three "loco coal" wagons.
- Peco, limited edition for the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust, S&DJR 7-plank wagon

- Peco NR-44W, GWR steel mineral open wagon

- Dapol NB-059C, GWR 20t steel mineral open wagon

I hope this is useful.

Thank you for the suggestions. I thought that getting transfers with 'loco' and or 'coal' would be easy! Why do they never have what you actually need?  Cheers, John

Hi John,

Did you see the link to the ModelMaster sheet I posted above?  I think it contains what you need:

Excuse the dubious quality picture, I struggle to capture these well with my phone camera.

Richard.

I'm not sure what period or company is of particular interest here, but British Railways gave up  having dedicated loco coal wagons and simply used traffic coal wagons as required to transport loco coal. This change happened in 1952, so for the majority of BR modellers wagons lettered for this traffic are not required.

Somewhere deep in the Forum, there's a thread about this.

I built some LNER and LMS type loco coal wagons some years ago, and found transfers for them. Unfortunately, I don't now recall where they were; probably the Modelmaster ones, but possibly an ancient Woodhead set.

I have just ordered a set of transfers from Railtec, which include the required transfers! I also impulse bought 'chalk destinations'. Thanks for your help, John
