Title: Donations!
Post by: Papyrus on January 12, 2019, 04:32:01 PM
Hello all fellow members!

Many of you may not have noticed, but this month's donations goal has just been quietly increased. I think we can all guess why this is - Tank has raided his holiday fund for the server upgrade and needs the money back before Mrs Tank notices!  :D

I think the increase is eminently reasonable considering all the work that has been put in over the last few weeks. I'm more than happy to dig a little deeper in my pocket for once to keep this excellent ship afloat engine in steam, and I hope many others will too. Go to it, lads and lasses!

Once again, thanks to Tank and the team.

Cheers,

Chris

Many thanks Chris.  :)

Yes, I've had a big bill, and I haven't even put it all on the donations target for this month. :'(

As always, I thank you all for your kind donations.  Every little bit helps!  A few more changes and the new gallery will be up and running for everyone soon.  It has been a nightmare due to the very large amount of photo's that we have on here (about 50GB), so I'm glad that we don't allow video's to be stored on here as well!  :)

According to the stat's, there are 6468 members of the forum. If most of the members chipped in a couple of quid,we could all meet up at TINGS and the drinks would be on Tank!  :D. My couple of quid going in shortly and, as said by Chris, (Papyrus), thanks to Tank and everybody involved in the improvements.

Added a contribution

Mother dearest ("Nanna" now) is visiting this weekend and very kindly bought us a very nice lunch.

"Paid the kindness forward" as the kids say.

Just over 2 years (+1 day)  since the boss posted in this thread so maybe there's a more recent one regarding NGF donations?

Anyway, a couple of questions:

I made a small donation last night, early morning after @woodbury22uk (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1599) Mike kindly dug out a spare part I required and is sending to me free of charge, thanks again Mike. However, the "January goal" hasn't changed since then. Is this a manual adjustment made by @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) ?

Possibly linked to my first question, I made the donation manually rather than using the "Make a donation" button as I wasn't sure if it would be sent as Friends & Family which doesn't incur a fee whereas any other option does. So my question is, does this go through as Friends & Family if using that button?

As an aside I did also post feedback for Mike (for being such a decent chap) as I always do whether I have bought or sold through the forum.

Just made a donation in appreciation for generous help from others.
Many, many thanks to the two forum members who have recently sent me items for my current point electrification project (you know who you are).
Anyway, always glad to help out with forum funds.

Thanks everyone as always for your constant donations.

Yes, the donations button does mean that we lose a little due to charges, but direct donations to the email address mean that it can be sent as F&F.  I don't generally change the donation amount unless I've had to make a big payment on upgrades.

Nicely explained, thanks boss.

Just a reminder to all then that ideally you should make the payment manually via Friends & Family (if possible) so Tank, and therefore the forum, get a few more pennies

Yes, that would be great.     I'm terrible at accounting, (well, just remembering to get things done in general  :D ), so I'm just happy if there is enough money between donations, advertising and my bank account to pay for it all!   :smiley-laughing:  But, I'm sure that the forum covers itself 99% of the time.

I've just noticed that the donations target has been quietly increased again this month. I know @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) gets embarrassed about mentioning this, so I thought I would flag it up for those of you who had also missed it. We all know a lot of work is going on in the bowels of the Forum at present, so stump up a few quid/dollars/yen/euros if you can. And if we beat the target, perhaps Chris can afford a Christmas pudding as well as a turkey!

Happy Christmas, @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) and thanks for everything.

Cheers,

Chris

Just a quick question, how do we do this manually?

Don't use the (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/Themes/default/images/x-click-but21.gif) button. Go to the Paypal page and send money to Contact@NGaugeForum.co.uk, then select Friends and Family. This will mean that some of the money isn't taken by Paypal as fees.

I've used this method and confirm it works well and is really easy to do.

Worth considering if you have a 'Paypal' account.

Best wishes

Thanks very much Chris.  Yes, I had to put it up because of the recent upgrades.  Subsequent months help pay it off as well.

I really appreciate the donations that members give to the forum.  I know that other forums I belong to (not railway related) really struggle for funds, and it is hard to ask for it, so thank you very much for your help with this.

Yes, you're completely right about doing it that way.  It does add on that extra that Paypal would otherwise take, so a great point, thanks for saying that.

Attention, you 'orrible lot!

We are halfway through December, and this month's donations are woefully short of the target. We all know times is 'ard, but @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) needs to buy his Christmas turkey!*

So, please put whatever you can afford in the coffers to ensure this wonderful forum goes from strength to strength.

Cheers,

Chris

Many thanks everyone.  I always appreciate those that are willing, and able, to give to the forum.

We can't afford a turkey this year, but the cat better watch out near Christmas Eve....!   ;) ;D

Please forgive my clumsy attempt at humour. Mrs P frequently tells me I don't think...

I hope you have a good Christmas anyway.

As I have never paid anything by PayPal, any chance of some instructions on this?

[...] the cat better watch out near Christmas Eve....!   ;) ;D

Thank you for the timely warning.  Poppy is already on high alert, scanning southwards for any sign of someone with a particular penchant for red, white and blue trains (and not those of the fabulous Furness Railway!) attempting to cross the Tweed.

(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/128/6222-181222100257.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=128607)

Poppy has a cunning defensive plan should a model railway-minded cat catcher get into the house.  She will go behind the Table-Top Railway.  The all round coarse modelling and SuperSilliness of the train set will cause any serious model railway enthusiast to beat an immediate ignominious retreat.

Will all best wishes and special thanks to @Papyrus (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2975) for raising this important matter regarding our FantasticForum.

Toodle-pip

John and Poppy

I forget exactly how to do it, but you can pay someone without actually being a member of PayPal. I believe all you need is a Credit or Debit Card. It will probably tell you how to do it on the PayPal site. If you get stuck, let us know and someone will be able to talk you through it.

Yes, just click the link, and when on the Paypal page, click "Pay by Debit or Credit Card".  So no need to log in.  Many thank in advance.  :)

One thing to remember with PayPal donations - if you send it as a payment for goods, the forum, (i.e. Tank), pays the fees, if you send it as a 'Friends and Family' payment, you pay the fees.  As an example, I have just donated £5.00p, so, after conversion, that cost me €5.99 - not a problem. However, PayPal then add on the fee to my bill, so my initial £5.00p, (€5.99c), becomes €7.98c!.  So you have to ask yourself if the forum or yourself pays the fee. Still, it is a fantastic forum, with plenty of knowledgeable and talented members. I know a lot of n gauge knowledge I now have is as a direct result of the forum members, so well worth a fiver/tenner every now and then.  :beers:

That's because you're in Euroland and sent 5 UK Pounds to the UK.
If there is no currency conversion, F&F transactions attract no fees, either for the sender or the receiver.

I don't know if this works the other way round, but when I buy things in a foreign currency I always tell PayPal to charge my credit card in that currency. My credit card provider gives a far better exchange rate than PayPal. (But I realise many credit card providers don't, so check before you decide.)
