Why is it that car insurance renewal premiums are dearer for a loyal existing customer that's not made a claim than for a new customer.

I've changed mine from Churchill to LV this year.I hadn't been allowed to drive after a hip replacement until last Friday,my car and Green Flag renewals were due on the 19th of July.
I phoned both companies and explained the situation in so much as I would not require any cover until I was allowed to drive again.

Churchill put the renewal price up from £280.00 to £306 and lost a customer.
LV did the cover for £262.00.

I phoned Green Flag up and the renewal had gone from £42.00 to £78.00 for the same cover. Not wanting to be without breakdown cover I had renewed the cover,I looked on their site this morning and that cover is available for...£42.00 for a new customer.

I phoned Green Flag up and asked for an explanation and was told there was nothing they could do,so I cancelled the cover and took it out again on their web site as a new customer saving me £36.00.

poliss

Tank, have you tried entering 0 into CV19?

Tank

That's a lot of money Jonclox!  Start walking!  LOL

Poliss -  Yes, I have tried going into CV19, and I entered 0.  There were three dashes "---", so I did "--0" and "000" and still it won't clear the "Cons" symbol.  I can't control it at all, and it just sits there with the lights on. ???

poliss

Just a thought. Was it an 'advanced consist' or a 'universal consist'?
Clearing Universal (Old-Style) Consists
To clear a consist, press CONSIST until "Cons oLd cLr" flashes in the
display. Then press ENTER. Turning off the power on the base unit will not
clear the consist.

Tank

Yup, I did that first, but it still won't shift it.  :(  I'm sure I've followed the instructions properly.

Thanks for your help Poliss.  Any other ideas welcome!

Allan

Something else people forget is that when you get an 'on line' discount as a new customer, when your insurance comes up for renewal your premium goes up by that discount at least 'cos you're not a new customer anymore. I had the same thing with Saga and refused to renew until I'd negotiated that same discount again. Grrrrr
