Title: Insert Hyperlink Button, what's it for?
Post by: jpendle on September 27, 2022, 02:51:21 PM
Here is a link to a webpage.

This one uses the "Insert Hyperlink" button

http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/ (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/)

This one doesn't.

Is the "Insert Hyperlink" button superfluous, or am I doing something wrong?

Regards,

John P

I think it's more a case of the forum software evolving over time to the point where it will examine the text content and interpret things it thinks should be hyperlinks without you needing to flag them as such using the button.

I still tend to paste the link into the post then select it and hit the hyperlink button to confirm it's an active link.   Just in case the intelligent interpreting gets it wrong.

You can also insert a link with some link text (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/) in between the square bracketed url markers by putting the actual URL in the first marker, like this but without the spaces.
[ url=https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/ ] link text [ /url ]

Although when I do that on my phone it adds loads of extra text!

Edit: and of course it just worked perfectly  :smiley-laughing:

Straight paste :
https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/ (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/)

Paste link, select text, click "hyperlink button"
https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/ (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/)

[ url=https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/]manually edited[ /url ]

Like adding photos, the hyperlink button is one thing that could be improved on the NGS. On RMWeb you get a pop-up box asking for the link and the text to be displayed as the link.

If I want to refer the reader to a particular post, I just hover over the relevent post heading, right click and select  'Copy Link Address' and then paste it into my reply. I didn'y know there was any other way.  ???

You can also use the Code button to enter BBC Code, without it working, rather than leaving a space to 'break' it...

As for the hyperlinks, I added some code some years back to automatically translate web addresses into hyperlinks automatically.  The button can be handy, but isn't really needed by everyone.
