Unhappy Thread

Actually more than "unhappy".  A couple of weeks ago I had the HVAC system replaced as the old one was continually losing refrigerant as the manufacturer kept using copper coils instead of the current standard of aluminium (there was a class action suit about this but, we fell outside the applicable range).  The "team" that did the replacement did OK, including changing the breaker for the air handler from 30A to 25A.

I went to close the bonnet on the car closest to the circuit panel and it wouldn't close completely.  After a couple of slams, it closed to the safety latch, but then wouldn't open back up.  Thinking the latch was defective on this 23-year old car, I strapped the bonnet down and booked it in to the local mechanic to have them sort it out.

After half an hour he called (laughing) and said the problem was a 30A breaker sitting on the radiator that was preventing the bonnet closing and that was what had jammed everything up.  Total cost USD85 because the HVAC bozo put the removed breaker in the engine bay of a car.

Yes, I know I should have looked closer, but ....

The bonnet was open because we have a mouse problem in the garage.  We were advised to leave the bonnets open to discourage the mice from using the area around the engine as a nice, warm, dark place to camp out.  That was following one taking up residence in my wife's car and chewing through a bunch of wires hidden in a hard to reach area which in turn cost USD650 to find and rewire.  Apparently the issue is that some manufacturers use wiring with a soybean-based insulation that the mice here love.

Thanks for the explanation Jon which, I must admit, I could never have imagined being the justification. You certainly have my sympathies. Maybe get a cat??

Aside from SWMBO being allergic to cat dander, a cat would probably spend most of its time chasing the geckos, salamanders, fence lizards, and sundry assorted snakes that inhabit the garage. As well as trying to terrorize the shelties.

Well, that makes me glad I live in Ireland. Having said that, if St. Patrick had not got his way and there were snakes in Ireland, we would not be here - Louisa nearly has a fit if you just mention the word 'snake'!

Ok so I was 60 a couple of weeks ago. Since then I've been receiving daily emails like the one below. Have they picked up my age from somewhere or has someone subscribed me to their email list? George - I think its what we call AC ( as in Air Conditioning , not DC ).

I believe the cousins across the Pacific ( for me just now ) and across the Atlantic ( when I am in UK ) use the term Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning or maybe the last word is Cooling? Anyway the systems are done rather differently over there.

I worked out that AC stood for air conditioning, but I didn't know what the HV bit was.

Not so much unhappy but grumpy with retailers misleading offers.
I live equidistant between 2 Asda's, one a superstore and the other a large service station on the A22 both selling petrol and around 3 miles apart.
Today I needed petrol and was passing the service station so filled up. They have an offer on, spend £20 in the shop and get 5p a litre off fuel. SWMBO then decided we needed to pop down to the retail park where the other Asda is. They don't have the same offer but their petrol is 5.2p a litre cheaper in the first place,
Not such a good offer then after all and in fact if you take it up they are still making .2p more.

I've never understood why petrol varies in price so much between different branches of the same store. Surely it costs the same to supply the petrol? When they replenish the tanks it probably all comes on the same tanker anyway. Baked beans cost the same in every branch of Sainsbury's, why can't petrol?
