Yesterday I went to collect a rental car from Avis, and they literally had no car to honour my month old reservation. After some negotiation I found myself with a temporary car in the form of a Chevy Camaro V8 455bhp yellow machine. It should come with a towable fuel bowser, even though the V8 becomes a V4 when under a light load.
Sadly I had to swap it today for a soul-less but more practical Kia Soul.
Sometimes I'm the dog and somtimes I am the lampost.

Back when I was a working chap I travelled all over the world. I have had rented cars in, quite literally dozens of countries. I NEVER, ever got an upgrade the entire time, out of hundreds of hirings! Bah!

I used to travel the country working on electronic equipment, normally each time I went out it would be a company car a diesel escort estate. But about 25% of the time it would be a hire car.
On one occasion I arrived Monday morning to find I had a top of the range vauxhall omega complete with built in mobile phone. I drove from Milton Keynes to RAF Leuchars for the work after a couple of days my boss flew up and got issued at Edinburgh airport a rover 1300. He spent the rest of the week trying to get the omega off of me.. he didn't get it...

My friends are both Gulf war veterans and have treated themselves to the Ram. Forever complaining it is too comfortable. Some people.:-)
On my first trip to the US the car rental people gave me a Ford Thunderbird.
It was a 1985 model though so not that exciting.

as for the lamp post I have yet one to jump in front of me (rabbits a different matter :D) .
After my rather pleasing Camaro experience I have to report that Karma rebalancing has taken place over the past week, but with some positive outcomes.
It all started on the second Warley exhibition day. Zipping along the M42 I had a front tyre blowout. Pleased that the car responded well and I was able to negotiate my way quickly from lane 3 to the (live) hard shoulder and then the safety refuge without anyone being inconvenienced. Courtesy of Ford Assist and the AA I was fully mobile within 2 hours and got to the show later than planned. Still managed to get to see everything I wanted and buy the small items on my list from the Squires hypermarket. Extra bonus was that the puncture was repairable for £17, and took about 20 minutes to fix on the Monday morning. :-)
Next morning my expensive new temperature/hygrometer weather station sender unit stopped working. Bought it from France so emailed the supplier. By return received a pre-paid label to return the faulty one, and a message from the manufacturer giving me the tracking number for the replacement they sent. Unfortunately the French "yellow jacket" demonstrations seem to have blocked the parcel in Lausanne for the time being. Meantime managed to get an old sender unit to work again.
Wednesday was my birthday and I was off to Oxford for a lunch with some friends and another birthday boy. Seeing as I would be having a drink or two I decided to let the train take the strain. Train failed at Leamington Spa and arrival in Oxford was one hour late. As I walked out of the station a #1 bus pulled in. Jumped aboard showed my pass and settled down for the 5 minute ride. By the time I got off the bus I had two wasp stings on the back of my neck. A weak autumnal wasp has not got a very powerful sting, and one antihistamine was enough to calm things down.
The journey back to Redditch was just as eventful. The Voyager from Oxford was running late and was full to the brim. Missed my connection at New Street and caught the next available train. This ground to a protracted halt at the first stop because a preceding train had damaged the overhead. Eventually got back 2 hours late, after a mix of bus and taxi rides.
Friday morning I got out of bed only to be forced to sit down by an excruciating groin pain. Managed to shower and navigated the GPs 'phone system to get an appointment within an hour of opening. The GP I saw has a very neutral bed-side manner, and illustrated his diagnosis on a notepad. His diagnosis took about 20 seconds, a small hernia which will almost certainly recur and will need repair. But it has to get worse before they will operate.
So on reflection not a brilliant week, but I realised that every negative instance had a solution, and I was pleased that I was able to get things back on track with a bit of clearish thinking and the help of others.
Although I was the lamppost this time I did feel that maybe it was not so bad after all.
Some would consider that a week from hell but glad you've maintained your equanimity, Mike
