Title: Slow?
Post by: Jimbo on January 24, 2017, 04:26:29 PM
Hi, this may not necessarily be a forum fault, it might be my 'pooter.....or even what's apparently known in the IT trade as a P.I.C.N.I.C. (Problem In Chair Not In Computer), whenever I click on a thread the little thing at the top keeps spinning round and round for ages and ages before anything pops up!? It started a couple of days ago and been doing it ever since, any ideas amongst the more computer literate among us please? Thank you!

Jimbo.

Just to add, the thingy that spins around as if the 'pooter is thinking about something is the one on my tab at the very top, not the little Black one on the forum page....although that seems to be going Ten to the Dozen a lot lately! LOL!

You could try re-booting your modem and computer.
I.e. Power down the computer and let it re-boot. Switch off or unplug the modem and restart that.
If that does not work, you may be advised to download some software, There is a free one which I use called CCleaner. It cleans all the junk and history from your computer which may be slowing it down.
Make sure you download the free version as there is one you pay for. Leave CCleaner on default setting but perhaps untick the cookies and make sure the "Saved Passwords" option is also unticked and run programme by clicking "Analyze". When it comes back with the results click on "Run Cleaner" option. I use it about once a month and the difference in speed is very noticeable.
You can download it from the link below:-

That's great! Thank you @Delboy (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=3997) ! Will try a disk clean up then (Just as soon as I can find out how! It's a fairly new laptop running Windows 10, still getting used to it!) that's what I used to do occasionally on the old PC (Windows XP), if not will look into the 'App' you suggested, thanks again!  :NGaugersRule:

@Jimbo (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5746) Have you checked everything under your desk? :hmmm:

It could just be a build up of fluff in the treadle bearings.  :D

Either that or you're not treadling fast enough. Try a few Mars bars. :D

Just trying to help. ;)

No problems here BTW.

Disk Cleanup is on the start menu under Windows Administrative Tools in Windows 10

Great! Thank you @escafeld (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5876) , I found administrative tools within the control panel, taking action on your suggestion, and have just this minute done a clean up by ticking several boxes in the clean up bit, then a progress bar came up and it said 'cleaning up unnecessary files on your machine', just hope I haven't got rid of anything the 'pooter wanted to run properly  :uneasy:, see what happens now! , in some aspects I think Windows 10 is easier to use than XP but in others it's quite frustrating! Still, as long as I can just do what I need to do i'm happy....it's wasted on me really! LOL!

Jimbo,
Do you tend to leave your computer on all the time?
If so my initial suggestion of re-booting computer and modem ever now and then, should make a difference to your internet speeds.
Also worth checking on line what your internet speed is (google broadband speed checker) and test your line, as some providers (no names) do slow things down for all at busy times.
My suggestion for CCleaner is still an option although I must confess, I do not have Windows 10 so did not know of the clean up option within it.
I swear by CCleaner and use it when I am uninstalling software as well since it tends to be more reliable than the earlier Windows systems.
Cheers Delboy.

Hi @Delboy (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=3997) , thank you, you're right! It is on all the time we're indoors actually! Will do a reboot now and again as you suggest and see how we get on....I suppose that must have the effect of stirring it up a bit, like I said it may not be a forum issue, could be allsorts of reasons really I suppose e.g. internet speeds at certain times of day etc.....it does seem to be quite random  :hmmm:
Title: Re: Slow?
Post by: Delboy on January 27, 2017, 07:33:16 PM
Jimbo,
I would test it at various times in the day and evening and establish if there is a pattern to the speed changes. i have known people to complain to the provider and as if by magic the speed increases emphatically. As I said some providers "throttle down" the feeds at times.
I am with a provider that does not and rarely have problems but when I do, I usually run my faithful CCleaner or just re-boot everything.
Good luck,
Delboy.

Very slow this evening. I couldn't get in at all between 17:15 & 17:30 - 'the server dropped the connection'

It's taking a long time to do anything. Just loading this page took 17 seconds, according to the stats at the bottom.

I get timeouts at least once a day. Usually back to normal within 10 minutes. Viewing on mobile, so nothing to do with throttled ISPs or similar as I view on the move too.

Been bad on this website only all evening, with cannot connects and slow connects - the former very common.

It was a long post in the jokes section. I clicked on the post button and it dropped out. No problems the second time. However, I've learnt to copy the post before hitting the button.

You could try only posting short jokes Malc. :D

I have the drop-out problem with long posts and also take to copying before I hit the post button to save rewriting.

Seems relatively okay this morning, but occasional oddities still happening, such as drop-outs, cannot find server, me making a cup of tea........

It must be the server then as i cant see anythng wrong with the db at all... its also running fine here
Certainly I've seen the page load, and say it took 5 seconds to create, and while I was looking at that, it was still loading the pictures. No problem with my bandwidth, as other websites are working fine, so it looks like some sort of throttling issue at the server end of things.

I think we all need to accept that interweb sites are sometimes slow, and with so many gubbins in between us and the site server it's difficult to know where the problem is.

It sometimes helps to Repair Connection ( Start | Settings | Network Connections | Local Area Connection on XP).

I must admit that when I post here to say I am having viewing/posting issues it is only to let Admin know. I am never  annoyed by it or indeed bothered.

To be fair on mods,I have found pretty much every website slow in the last 4-5 days, weekend past I thought the internet had been killed-off (I always suspect the CIA :-[).  All the settings on my work desktop re-set about a week ago and internet is slow since.  I'm going through my home laptops -all are running slow and any website is slow to load at the moment.  I think Windows has done a big update recently characterised by a few things for me, it's certainly not just NGF that is slow for me anyway!  I have experienced the same problems acessing the NGF as others -but no different from trying to access allot of other websites   It's slowly coming around back to normal though.

... and here. I've cleared all the caches, done a net speed check, compared with a variety of other sites, foreign and local. Net speed is the same as usual, load speed for other sites is good. The forum is very up and down. When it's up, it's fine. When it's slow it's S_L_O_W!!! Slow to stopped sometimes. 1 to 3 minutes loading a page. When I leave off trying, go somewhere else, come back, it's sometimes OK again for a while.
This is what I am finding both on my Lenovo tablet and on my desktop PC.

Hello good people,

It seems to be my turn to find the forum imitating a Jinty with 100 loaded wagons...

It has been slow starting up for a few days now, and like the OP have had the dreaded whirling wheel for 5 minutes or more. I don't think it can be my laptop as it gets a regular disc-clean and none of my other programs/favourite websites seem to be affected.

Any ideas, chaps?

Thanks for your replies.

As I said earlier, it's only this site that I am having problems with. We are semi in the sticks here - sticks on one side of us, bricks on the other. My broadband speed is between 12.5 and 13.5 Mbps depending which checker you use.

First world problems...

I'm sure it will be better again soon.
