I'll say it's not a good idea !!!  :o :o :o

I'd try a scalpel myself ...  :confused1:

That's taking the phrase "put your shoulder into it" far too literally

Unfortunately, unless you can supply the digital file that the original kit was created with, then a laser will be of no use to you.

Laser cutters require an original digital file to follow to guide the laser head over the material you want cutting.  Someone would have to re-draw all the parts of your kit into a program and then ensure that your uncut card kit is exactly located on the cutting bed for the laser to follow the program.

The opportunities for an almighty balls-up are legion..................

Sorry...

:'( Looks like the old fashion way cut via scalpel and plenty of plaster for cuts on fingers.mike

It may be possible as I have a laser cutter but it will be expensive as I will have to draw the cutting file. Ideally test cut it and hopefully get the alignment right, it would be an interesting challenge. Are you at TINGS if so ask for me on the DCC Supplies stand and bring along the paper buildings you want cutting.

Best of luck with that Richard!!!

I would be very interested to see if you can do it.  I use a laser cutter for producing the superstructures of my R/C boat kits, but I design the digital files myself and the laser just has to cut the parts out of plain white styrene sheet.

Keep us posted yeah?

I have put more thought into this and advised Mike that it will not be cost effective.

I have suggested that he finds someone or someones to help him locally how may be willing to cut them out by hand for him.

Sorry folks but it would take quite a a lot of time to trace off the outline on to AutoCAD and then I would have to try and get perfect alignment between the sheet, the cutter and the drawing or the laser would be cutting off detail instead.

Mike - pop up a link to what you have bought please?

I have built quite a few paper and card models in my time.  Lets have a look at the complexity of what you have - I am sure I can wave a knife over the sheets and let you have them back to assemble yourself.

Here are a couple of card models I have made in the past...

Ok - it is not train related, but was very enjoyable to build and demonstrate well what can be done with just a knife, glue and card
