Creator of the "Trumptonshire" trilogy - Trumpton, Camberwick Green, and Chigley has died aged 95. Chigley was always my favourite due to "Bessie" the steam engine, ably piloted by Lord Belborough and Brackett the butler:-

"Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
Under bridges over bridges to our destination
Puffing through the countryside there's so much to be seen.
Passengers waving as we steam through a station.
Stoke up fireman for the signal is at green.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
In the cutting, through the tunnel,
Rushing clanking on the track.
Wheezing pistons, smoking funnels,
Turning wheels go clickety clack.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again."

Another little bit of my childhood gone  :(

They were such marvellous, gentle little programs that I loved watching over and over again when I was a nipper. So much better than all this shouty CGI we have nowadays.

I never had any exposure to Gordon Murray except for Camberwick Green.

Sad news, but at the same time, a pretty cool bloke.

RIP.
Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

much prefer the  half man half biscuits version.

Time flies by when you're a driver of a train
Speeding out of Trumpton with a cargo of cocaine
I get high when I'm the pilot of a plane
Touching down at Camberwick I'm stoned out of my brain
Under bridges, over bridges to our destination
Careful with that spliff, Eugene, it causes condensation

Every Saturday I get the Chigley Skins
And they always smash my windows cos the home side always wins

Yeah time flies by when you're a driver of a train
Gonna get these syringes out and crank up once again

Under bridges, over bridges to our destination
Careful with that spliff, Eugene, it causes condensation

Loved Windy Miller, Pew, Pew etc... and that train...

Memories of more innocent times with wonderful gentle stories,

wish they made stuff like this for children now.

Beware the rose-coloured spectacles! There was some dross on TV in the Seventies, and there's some great stuff on CBeebies at the moment. Twirliwoos is brilliantly done and funny; In the Night Garden is wonderfully Lovecraftian in my opinion; and Octonauts contains a bucketload of marine biology in every episode.

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left...

I really could go for the idea of Lovecraftian childrens' TV. You can already get Cthulhu cuddly toys and kid's books  :laugh3:

Me too, which is why I wrote that piece... the parallels between 'In the Night Garden' and the Dreamlands stories are uncanny at times. Especially when you think that Lovecraft was trying to evoke those imaginary worlds children create but lose access to as they become adults.

It's hard not to think of the TV show when you read lines like this, "Well did the traveller know those garden lands that lie betwixt the wood of the Cerenerian Sea, and blithely did he follow the singing river Oukianos that marked his course".

To get back to Gordon Murray, I would like to know why there are no pubs in Trumptonshire.

Was G. Murray anti-alcohol ?

Best regards,

Joe
