Title: Would You Be Interested In An NGF 10 Year Wagon/Van? - available now!,
Post by: Tank on January 01, 2021, 09:58:58 PM
Hello all,

Due to some positive comments, I'm looking at commissioning some rolling stock to commemorate 10 years of the NGF.

Firstly, I need to find out what rolling stock if available for commissions, and also try to balance something that can be used over a wide time range to include as many members as possible.  Of course, that may be difficult to do!

So, this is just for general interest at the moment to see how popular these may be.  :)  Do let us know!  Obviously this may be difficult without you knowing what they may be, what they will look like design wise, and how much.  But, this is just to show interest.

Ideas of what you'd like on the chosen rolling stock are appreciated.

Thank you,
Tank.

Maybe chris / Tank a simple 5 / 7 plank open wagon 16 tonnes or a box van be an ideal starting point. Cheers. Happy new year. Chris

I would think a 3 or 7 plank  wagon or 16 ton box van would be worth a look but  I would consider most wagons.

How about a set of decals rather than wagon?

A small sheet could cover 5,7 planks and a Tank.

Makes it easier for postage for those in the colonies.

...just thinking out loud.

My thoughts are thus:

More often than not a commemorative wagon looks great, but is completely useless on a layout. "Bertram Modellers 23rd Year Exhibition at the Bull Ring" doesn't really fit into anyones era.

Something that people could actually use would be nice. Slightly more subtle wording could be done...

...and just spit-balling here...

..."NGF - Purveyors of Fine Works"
..."Founded in 2010"
..."10 Years of serving our Community"

A seven plank open wagon or closed goods wagon I'm thinking.

If you went for the 'Founded in..' option then it'd work for future members.

That's my thoughts for a start.

I think it's an excellent idea. Prototypicality (if that's a word - I suspect not) is not an issue for me. It's a fun thing, and commerates an occasion.

I'm not interested in decals, just a wagon. Here a the Antipodes I run a souvenir/commemorative train with wagons from Minatur Wunderland, Kyoto Railway museum, and of course NGF!

Count me in!

I would also be interested...
...and surely the most appropriate type of wagon would have to be...

...a Tank wagon... :D

:sorrysign:

Put me down for 10 (and I am being serious). 8)
They would match the 10 NGS white box vans I have, from way, way back. :(
They're so old, the foam in the packaging has started disintegrating... :o

It's a difficult one, this.

Comemoratives are nice in a way ... and yet ... I have this N Gauge Society van. Do I ever do anything with it? Nope. It never runs in a train ... it just sits gathering dust.

A special edition of some sort ... a wagon in a livery that you can ONLY get here ... might hold more interest. But then you run into the age old problem that you can't please all the people, and what would be appropriate to run on one person's layout wouldn't be appropriate for another.

And so you come back to the idea of a comemorative. But how about something that COULD run on layouts ... like, oh, I don't know ... a PO wagon in the name of N. G. F. Orum & Associates, wagon number 10 ...

I'm sorry, but I can't understand the difficulty!

OF COURSE you can run it on a layout - any layout, any time! It commemorates an achievement!

Even at an exhibition, it could be put into a train somewhere.

I mean, really. If you don't want one, don't buy one!

It's not a difficult one, this.

It just sits gathering dust.

Well, maybe not. It is however not for me I think these type of things are a complete waste of time such as the old Christmas Specials etc.

Sorry folks if you don't agree.

Well, as I said, you're not obligated to get one. However, I am very fond of my collectors editions, and as can be seen in the photo, they don't just sit in their boxes gathering dust.

I wonder if any other members have a 1996 Peco Golden Jubilee wagon?  ;)

Dig them gold wheels, man!  :headbang:

I wonder if you could persuade Robbie Burns (Robbie's Rolling Stock) to do a run of something based on the Peco 7-plank, van or 14T tank wagon kits?
I (and several other members, I believe) have his set of Trumpton 7-plankers and I'm very happy with them - both quality and price.

If the volume would be too great for him to handle as RTR, maybe he could just do the transfers for people to apply themselves.

I concur with others in this thread, i really don't care what you produce I am in for one. I even have an American box car which was a commemorative car produced for the 1991 n-scale convention in Melbourne, where I spent the whole long weekend running the only UK based layout. Should hunt it out for a show and tell.

I'm a "not sure".

A standard length box van or plank wagon would probably find a home on my shunting puzzle layout but not anything else.

I agree completely with George.  It's a terrific idea and, to me, such things are part of the fun of model railways.  At present, as a fairly recent convert to British 'N' gauge, I've only one souvenir wagon; for the Borders Railway re-opening.  It often runs in the goods trains on my little layout.  As for relevance: I can't see the railway from my house, but I can hear it (especially steam specials!), so I think the wagon is especially relevant.  The Forum wagon would be equally relevant as it would be a tribute to all the Forum Friends who have provided such friendship and inspiration since July 2017.

Also, a NGF wagon would be absolutely lovely for photographs of 'through running' - a fun-filled activity in which some of us take part from time to time!

Yes, please, @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) - an NGF wagon would be a wizard wheeze; please count me as a definite.

All best wishes from a winter wonderland between the Forth and the Tweed.

John, haven't got your snow, but it has not been hot here where I live. But it's great! Raining outside and so much better than our horrible bushfires last year.

I am a little amazed by what seems to be almost venomous opposition to a tenth anniversary wagon, no matter what era.

As you say, we're in this for fun, and I can't wait for such a model!  :beers:

Not seeing any venom, just not something 1/4 respondents are interested in. It's one of those things that if I saw on an exhibition layout I'd say "ahh, you're on the NGF are you?" So in that respect I support it wholly, and get why people would buy one. But I'm not exhibiting anything, and as a model I have no interest in it, that's all.

Happy to acquire any NGF commemorative model, no matter the style, era, country or wording.

But as my layout and collection is 99% Swiss, I would like to suggest - with no real seriousness - that to satisfy myself and all other Continental and Worldwide modellers as well as the UK contingent, a suitable passenger carriage could be emblazoned with something like "N Gauge Forum 10th Anniversary World Tour - Modellers on the Move!".

Individual modellers could then add model Forum members of their choice to occupy the seats. (Every model purchased would of course be pre-fitted with a seated figure of Chris @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) ).

I wouldn't say "venomous", just a few people stating that it wouldn't interest them, probably better from a point of view of assessing potential demand than just ignoring the thread.

Crikey, until two or so years ago I'd been out of the hobby for over thirty years yet that name immediately jumped off the page at me.

For the 50th anniversary of Hull MRS we considered a special edition wagon with the Society logo on it. Partly due to minimum production quantities demanded by the RTR manufacturers and necessity to appeal outside the Society membership, in the end we decided rather than a fictional livery to do a prototype with a local connection ("Hull Corporation Electric Dept"). Sadly 00 only - we couldn't make the numbers work for an n-gauge version at the time.

https://hmrs.org.uk/photographs/hull-corporation-electricity-12t-7-plank-2xed-112-op-side-empty-to-hickleton-main-doncaster-built-birmingham-rcw-regd-lner-12412-1926.html

Wider sales (literally worldwide) were handled by a local model shop and could have easily shifted at least double the quantity. Last one I spotted on e-bay made £50...

The forum has been a veritable source of useful information for me so I wouldn't say no to it.  My era is modern so anything new would run in that (I'm very much rule 1!) however I'm looking at adding a small heritage section to my layout and I'm sure a suitable siding can be found for it!

Peco will do very small runs of wagons with special artwork. We found they were the best unless you can guarantee sales of 504 wagons which is the Bachmann minimum.
Although I am very fond of the NGF  I probably wouldn't buy one. I do have a small number of commemorative wagons but they just sit in their boxes and are never seen.

One thing I do for myself is have a couple of commemorative mugs made for each layout I build. Just thinking that might be another approach for the NGF birthday. These two mugs arrived this morning- they cost £11 including postage. I would be more inclined to buy an NGF mug than a wagon.

I have one of the NGF 21T hoppers and would go for a 10th Anniversary model.
Speaking personally, I'd prefer something like a Dapol Fruit D with maybe 'N Gauge Forum - first with the news' on it. After all, many of us run parcels trains, do we not? :D

The NGF is a global community - members and models from all over the world. Any wagon is going to sit uncomfortably amongst some collections, by being the wrong scale/nationality/era.

The decal idea would overcome the above dilemma, but might present another - turning off those who aren't confident in applying decals.

Another option to consider and one that avoids both the above quandaries is, a wagon load. The right choice could work in any scale/nationality/era and wouldn't require any certain skill from the purchaser.

We added an NGF 4 wheel tanker wagon when we wrote Tiny TrackZ a few years ago. This is a screenshot of the prototype. (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/19/main_28580.jpeg)

I'd definitely be up for another NGF wagon. As suggested above, the letters make more sense as a prototype than the full text but a mail or papers van of some sort as NewportNobby mentioned would also be cool.

I think it is a great idea, for me something slightly larger that a 10ft wheelbase wagon like the Dapol 21T hopper or Fruit D (as Mick suggested) would seem suitable. I would elect to have NGF lettering applied (I don't like the idea of transfers personally, not because I can't apply them, rather I feel it defeats the object of a "special" wagon if not uniquely RTR - just my opinion).

I can just visualise a 21T hopper in grey lettered "NGF 10" or similar subtly inserted in train of mineral wagons...

I like the idea and wondered if it could be a road vehicle that could sit at the station etc.? The livery/ decal I would of thought wouldn't matter as much as a railway based vehicle, of course there would be question of era and unfortunately I have no idea if you can get custom printed vehicles. R

It doesn't really matter whether there is a majority in favour or not. What matters is if there are enough members wanting to buy one to make it a worthwhile enterprise. I'd certainly buy one. I'd opt for either a tank wagon or a GUV. And, yes, I still have, and run, my white NGS wagon.

Cheers,

Does anyone know what Dapol's minimum order quantity is for a limited run? I know Bachmann always used to be 504 for 00 which is basically a box full. I also know Peco charge for the artwork and then you can have as few or as many made to that design at a standard price.

The Peco Swindon wagon was quite nice but mine doesn't come out at all. Trouble is these wagons just look so wrong with my locos.

It sort of does if you want project interest by extrapolation, as one assumes more people will need to buy than have said yes. If you know there are 300 active forum members and 50% of those surveyed are definitely interested. That's better than knowing that 50 people want to buy, but not know what portion of the membership have answered.

Looking at the Wagonyards special editions https://thewagonyard.co.uk/online-shop/?filter_cat_2=52  they have been supplied by Peco and Dapol and usually run out at 100 wagons a time so from that I guess that's the minimum order.
All down to opinions but I would suggest the NGF committing to that number may be an issue and that the assumptions above are actually more of a risk. I would be happier with 50 definites than making assumptions I would sell 150. Sorry but that doesn't sound like a good business plan. I've always had the impression that expressions of interest rarely mean the same number of units sold. It's easy to say yes when you don't have to hand any cash over. A more realistic number and reliable figure could be obtained if people knew exactly what they could be buying.
I'm interested but it would depend entirely on what was offered. To say yes at this stage would be misleading of me.
I know there are a lot of collectors out there and within days wagons would be going for silly money to non members on Ebay but I'd be more interested in a mug than a wagon that would end up sitting in a draw collecting dust.

Yes I'm assuming (possibly wrongly) that there won't be enough "definitely yes" to meet a minimum order threshold, therefore a degree of extrapolation would be needed.

I totally agree that I don't think they should extrapolate to the entire membership base. Even selling 100 easily would actually surprise me.

I'd also sooner have a mug.

I run my railway for fun and have a whole frieght train made up of special wagons and allso a frieght train made up with MEDWAY QUEEN  limited edition wagons and loco which I run sometimes ,but I would allso agree with those that suggested a Mug as I use a FORUM  mug every day .I think that a wagon in a rake on someones exhibition layout would help to promote the N G F but then it would need the full wording to be of use in that respect  the observer wouldnt know what N G F stood for and wouldnt be bothered to ask .
Just my opinion but whatever is decided I will buy one or two .

IF you went down the route of a sheet of assorted transfers, including the graffiti style [like that] then I'm sure Steve at Railtec would be willing to print the order, and to ensure take up, perhaps prepay at a definite price so the forum, ie @tank and his starving family  :smiley-laughing: wouldn't have to make up the shortfall, plus a small % to the forum funds.

when I wanted to do my series of rule 1 cl25s named for distilleries, Steve did me the custom numbers and name plates at a very good price.

:hmmm:

now that is a thought .... 37 427 "NGF - 10 year anniversary" any takers  >:D

Tank, I've voted Definitely. I would be buying one wagon, however, in support of the Forum and the work required to make available a limited edition wagon. My modelling period is the 30s so most wagons private owner wagons manufactured in that decade would have been seen on British rails for a considerable period. I would purchase a wagon from a different period if a 30s wagon wasn't chosen for production.

Just to be on the safe side, do a wagon *AND* a set of transfers. (you could actually be cheeky and buy the wagons as unpainted Dapol ones and apply the transfers to make the RTR wagon if it suits the plain colours like the NGF 21T wagon did).

As you can see it has the microtrains couplers and I have nothing to pull it with, also it doesn't fit under my bridges.

Oh dear! Not fitting under your bridges, I mean.

That is one lovely model, and I've always been a fan of Kadee couplings, one of the best things in American railroad modelling, I reckon.

Ok, you might not get it out often, but I'm betting you're very fond of it. I think it's great!

I have only a small amount of UK equipment, but I admit that I have always liked the wagons of the big four period with NE, LMS, SR or GW printed in large white letters on the sides. North American railways used to broadcast their rolling stock in a similar fashion, but sadly in recent years the railway identification is restricted to much smaller identification codes. So to cut to the chase, I would be in favour of a 7-plank coal wagon with a bold NGF on its side numbered as #10. Perhaps a set of three wagons could be produced in like manner say a van, a tank wagon, and a coal wagon.

The previous grey hopper was mundane enough to blend into the background and a good idea so I would definitely support something similar like a simple brown/grey standard van/tube wagon/hopper/tank as suggested.

The only downside is that you have to keep a low profile at exhibitions as Nobby stalks the floor searching for unwary forum members to pounce on to shift surplus stock.  :D

I've only voted 'Possibly' as it depends what the wagon itself is. I don't want a mug as I already have a forum mug and my eldest sister insists on buying me Emma bloody Bridgwater mugs for any occasion. There's only so many mugs a man can take/store!

never got a mug from my last employer, but did come in to work one christmas eve to find our contracts manager had been in that day and left a box of 12 bottles of lager 'for the lads as a thank you for their work this year'.

lads =

2 x receptionists
2 x day supervisors
6 x day officers
2 x night supervisors
2 x night officers
2 x relief officers

thanks but no thanks, and a merry christmas to you too.

The only mug I would be interested in is the kind of lidded insulated mug exhibitors use at exhibitions (Ah....exhibitions....remember them?) I think an NGF mug like that would be pretty cool and a visible advert for NGF that is somewhat bigger than a wagon!

I certainly would be interested in a couple of them, if they had metal wheels and ideally NEM pockets, As i don't want to have to replace plastic wheels for metal ones and spend more money upgrading wagons I have just purchased. NEM pockets again ideally, although have lots of conversion kits so could convert them.

Dapol minimum quantities is 100 of any type of wagon they currently produce and work out at very good value. and should come out at around £10 a waggon depending on the level of complexity of the printing on the side.

For me it really depends on the actual wagon proposed.
If it is marked "NGF 10 years", I will not be in because I feel it would look odd in a consist.
To refer to the forum, we could imagine a fictive company, e.g. N. Gafo for N Gauge Forum. With #10 as a possible road number.
For the wagon I would prefer a GPV from Dapol. For the livery I would avoid black and grey and go for red or dark green.
A plank wagon would also be ok.

I reckon you'd sell more of wagon in an authentic livery (like the Rapps or Jones open wagons commissioned from Peco for the Warley show) than of a commemorative design saying something like 'N Gauge Forum 10th Anniversary'. A commemorative design made to look as if it could be authentic (N.G.Forum open wagon No.10?) could perhaps be the best compromise IMHO.

As a modeller of foreign stuff any British wagon is of little actual use to me but I'd still have one to support the forum  :D

I'm not bothered about commemorative wagons looking out of place on the layout as that's not where I'd be putting them: I have several from N Club International, Trix Club, Peco, Arnold, and others and they sit in a display cabinet along with other rarities.  The only "souvenir" wagons to make an appearance on the tracks are some beer wagons I decaled up myself for my operating team, one or two of those escaped to collectors and I saw one sell on ebay for about 50 Euros a couple of years ago  :D

I quite like the idea of a mug, but that's another type of souvenir of which I already have too many and I don't actually drink tea/coffee anyway.

I like the idea of a road vehicle, something which might be seen anywhere at home or abroad. N Club International did a little van some years ago, one of those is lurking on the layout to be discovered!

I've got my OG NGF hopper, a couple of Locomotion Hoppers, and a couple of Borders Railway Reopening commemorative wagons. Not overly concerned about the lack of prototypical accuracyt when running them...
Maybe as we had a hopper before a tank wagon of some kind? Slap NGF on instead of Esso  :D

Or a conflat and container, that way all the NGF can be on the container and you can run the wagon without it

The first and last wagons are obvious, the container wagon is from the brilliant Kyoto Railway Museum, the tanker from the equally excellent Minatur Wunderland in Hamburg.

Every time I run this train, I get fond memories of my trips.

The NGF hopper is a favourite of mine, because it can be slipped quite easily into a train of such wagons.

Hello all,

Sorry for the lack of updates on this.  As some will know this has been a terrible year for me, and my head is only beginning to be back in the 'right place' to get things organised recently.  :)

So, I had been in contact with The Wagon Yard, but hadn't had a response for some time.  I emailed today and had a very speedy response back, so we can resume getting these wagons made.  Hurrah!  They are having problems with their Facebook account, hence why they haven't replied to my messages.

Hopefully many of you are still keen to buy one, or more!   :hmmm: :D

In that case, can I pre-order two please? Pretty please!  (And isn't it a coincidence - I was just thinking of making a donation to forum funds again  ;)).

Addit: Looking at the poll results, 50 would be nowhere near enough.  :hmmm:

I have a tendency to buy wagons in more than single quantities (I bought three Colmans Mustard vans just because I used to live in Norwich, the home of Colmans), so put me down for three please - this Forum has been of enormous help to me since I became an N gauge enthusiast.

Exactly!  And each time I see the wagon on my layout (perhaps as part of an unlikely train formation), I'll be reminded of all the wonderful people on our fabulous Forum who do so much to increase my enjoyment of our marvellous hobby.  Just like my Peco 'Borders Railway Re-opening' wagon reminds me of that lovely day when Her Majesty the Queen travelled on the railway behind 'Number Nine'.  As Max Boyce said, "I was there!"

I think this is a fine project and I'm glad to support it.

N gauge is fun!

With all best wishes.

I originally voted for possibly but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea!

An NGF branded van would be my preference to be honest but think it would be good to have a discussion about the form of the wagon as and when you decide to go ahead.

NEWSFLASH: Dateline December 2061.

Today at Bonhams a new record was established in the auction of a tiny, almost insignificant model railway freight wagon. Originally produced in a strictly limited run of 150 to mark the 10th Anniversary of the N Gauge Forum, the 1:148 model had already attracted pre-auction attention in the Press on this, the 50th Anniversary of that august and much respected website.
Since those far off days, when the average working week was over 37 hours, and the World's population was still below 8 Billion, the Forum has become the 'go to' place for those millions who now seek to recreate those far off days of rail travel, when trains still had wheels. With population levels now close to 15 billion, and the reduction in the weekly work time to just under an average of 3 hours, N Gauge has proved to be the perfect choice for millions. Within the new 'compact' apartment blocks that have become the answer to the worldwide housing problem, N Gauge modelling, particularly of the pre-Trumpian eras, has rapidly expanded to be the No 1 pastime of what is estimated in the Greater UK region alone to be over 32 million souls.

Originally produced at the instigation of the Forum's founding father,  the now legendary 'Tank' (real name withheld for privacy reasons), the model was first sold to Members who had registered a definite interest. Price charged in 2021 is now a closely guarded secret, but is thought to have been in the region of just £10.00!

But this morning, Bonhams, who had given a pre-sale estimate of £750.00, announced that an unknown buyer has, after a tense and exciting auction, paid the world record price of £2.7 Million.

This correspondent surmises that someone, somewhere, is probably wishing they had bought one of these 40 years ago. But then, don't we all!

"But this morning, Bonhams, who had given a pre-sale estimate of £750.00, announced that an unknown buyer has, after a tense and exciting auction, paid the world record price of £2.7 Million."

Allowing for inflation, this is equivalent to £7.24 at 2021 prices.

I'd still buy one, though.

I will be proud to run an N G F special wagon in my freight train if I take any to run at exhibitions on our club layouts it would hopefully get people asking what N G F stood for and possibly bring in new members .
I do what I can to promote this forum by handing out the little cards that our leader sent me ,  at all the shows B H E attend but of course I havnt been to any for 18 months but next year I hope we will see more exhibitions coming back for the public to see what a fascinating hobby model railways can be and I can carry on publiciseing this helpful and friendly Forum .

Sadly the thread page showing the actual 2021 price had faded over the intervening years. :D

Back in the present......
I now would like two of whatever is produced (one to run, one to preserve in aspic so that my great grandchildren have an inheritance nest egg  ;) ), and will be quite happy to pay whatever is decided upon.
So I'm hoping a large batch will be produced to cater for all those hoping to be buying more than the poll figure shows.

Don't worry, I'll announce when they are available and how much nearer the time.

At the moment, I can't see any problem with members buying as many as they like.  I will simply order another batch.  But, I'll confirm in a couple of weeks.  What I will do is put a time limit on the sales, so that these aren't available for years to come!  :D  Probably a couple of months availability, so that they are something special.

As I mentioned on the thread on the website of books made of faces (or some other word with similar spelling), the colour isn't that far off what the NCB wagons were painted on the pit lines around Newcastle. Tanfield and Bowes railways for example.

Looks great, and while some including me would have preferred bauxite, I get that this is the NGF's colours and I will definitely have one to be found lurking in a siding pending return to the well known mineral distributor "Northern Granite Forwarders"  :D

:thankyousign:

Roy

Yes, thank you indeed.  A splendid wagon.  I expect the wags, various, at the Table-Top Railway will refer to it as the 'Not Going Far' wagon.

Thanks again and best wishes

Excellent!

Just the job! Commemorates the 10 yr anniversary, looks like a private owner wagon, what's not to like?

They'll fly off the 'shelf'.

Looks terrific Tank

It's just by chance that I've renoticed this thread just now after having made a post to it almost 10 months ago. Then, I'd suggested that a 7 plank coal wagon with NGF printed boldly on the side and numbered 10 might be a good idea, but your current proposal looks even better so I'm in for one.

Somehow or another, my notification for posts on some threads including this one seems to have been unaccountably terminated for no apparent reason as it was for this one.

Yes please!!!
It looks great, and as many people say, Rule 0 applies - its my railway and I'll run what I like!
As mine is a preservation centre somewhere in old GWR/SR territory I can apply Rule 0 without concern.
Very well done to all involved with the forum and those organizing this wagon.

They may take up to 21 days for delivery, but I'm sure that just to cover themselves.

Sorry, but £22.95 overseas postage seems to be verging on a rip-off. According to the Royal Mail website, a small parcel to, say, Japan is only about a fiver. It would be cheaper if they sent to a UK address and one of us forwarded it on. How hard can it be?

Leaving that aside, my order's in! Good work @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) !

While I still think the P&P is a bit on the high side, assuming filling in the customs forms for Japan and the extra time at the post office in dealing with it (assuming RM rather than a courier) only take half an hour; at minimum wage that's already another fiver. Add the extra packaging needed for survival over the longer shipping distance and it easily adds up. [edit] If it's a small outfit and the sole proprietor isn't aiming to be on minimum wage, then you're looking at the time lost in doing the P&P eating up a decent amount of cost. So I can understand why it's such a high price, but it does make it somewhat off-putting still.

I was actually rather impressed with Revolution's somewhat brave packaging for the Sonic 56xx's they sent to me in Spain. Pretty much just a Jiffy bag level of protection around the boxes, relying on the actual product packaging to do the protection.

In order to minimise the shipping cost, I could order more wagons for those living in France. I would receive them all and then ship them via Colissimo. Less expensive.
Anyone interrsted?

Just ordered one. Yes, the £22.95 post to Australia is scary all right. So, I went and ordered another two wagons from The Wagon Yard to reduce my postal cost per item. Clever strategy on the part of the Wagon Yard.

Just this morning it dawned on me that the NGF special is being sold and has been for the last couple of days. For those wondering how to buy, I refer you to Tank's post #201 on this thread.

Update:-  There have now been over 100 wagons sold in 3 days!  I can't believe it. :o

Mark at The Wagon Yard can't believe the numbers either, and he has asked me to put a message on here to say that there may be a slight delay with some wagons.  This is because he doesn't want rush any wagons and risk lowering the quality of them by getting them out sooner.  He is hoping to keep to the 28 days, but I'm sure we'd all rather have a perfect model arrive to our door.  :)  We're certainly not talking months here.  ;)

Thanks for the fantastic response.   :NGaugersRule: :thankyousign:

Having thought a bit more about this, some of us are at a disadvantage, so we need some sort of handicap system. Members in Yorkshire should get theirs before me, even though I am a Yorkshireman! I should get mine before a member in say, Germany, who should get theirs before members in America, who should get theirs before members in say, Australia.

I have just had another thought, (two in one day  :o) - forget the aforementioned, my brain is starting to hurt.  :)

I have just read post #252 from @Bob Tidbury (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=3442) - how about first prize being a one day course in posting pictures to the forum?  ;D

Dannyboy
Don't you mean a YEARS free course on how to post pictures on the main Forum .
The Facebook page is much easier .I just go into the pictures on my Ipad click on the one I want and press send ,job done
So many people have shown me and told me even writen a crib sheet on how to do it , but my pea brain still cant grasp it .The pictures of my layout in my gallery folder were put on by me  BUT with a mate telling me step by step and watching me ALL the time .But I can NEVER remember how I did it when I try again .
So it will just have to be Facebook page  Im'e afraid .

If anyone would like a wagon but needs international post, please email Mark at The Wagon Yard and he'll help you out the best he can.

I can confirm that Mark is a really helpful chap. He found another shipping method (without tracking) to the Continent for half the price

Best,
Michael

A quick question, purely out of interest. Is the Forum getting a little bit of money from each wagon sold, or is the Wagon Yard receiving it all?

Whatever the financial arrangement is/was, I'm intending no criticism and I don't want to know any details. It would just be nice to know if the NGF's coffers are gaining a benefit from all Tank's hard work.

Cheers,

Chris

There are some right nosey people on here.......!   :smiley-laughing:

Yes Chris, we are getting a small amount from each wagon.  I didn't want to add too much so that prices were kept down.  To be honest, I was only expecting to sell 30 wagons originally, so I'm amazed at the numbers that I know about so far.

Thanks @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) ! That's excellent. I'm not normally nosey - I just ask the questions that everyone else is too shy to ask  :) .

I reckon you could have stuck an extra fiver on the price and people would have still bought them.

Cheers,

Chris

An interesting observation, and possibly (probably, certainly for me) correct. But how do you find the tipping point - could be dire consequences if you get it wrong.  :-\

Perhaps the poll should have explored this aspect instead of a straight yes, no, or possibly

On close inspection with my binocular head magnifier on the decoration is impressive, so crisp and clear.

I hope that makes sense. Thank you.

The base model is the standard Dapol BR 21t steel bodied mineral wagon. Frequently used for loco coal and block trains for large industrial users, but could also be found in general coal traffic mixed in with other coal wagons of varying styles and vintage.

Does anybody know the part number for this wagon unpainted from Dapol (or even know if such a thing is available) please? I assume the wagon yard buy them unpainted but are they available to the public? I'd like to have a go and painting myself just for fun.

This particular one's not showing on the list of available unpainted N wagons.  Maybe The Wagon Yard can get them unpainted in bulk, or maybe they just use a plain painted version and respray.

They certainly have been available unpainted in the past - I've had a couple, but I can't see any currently listed anywhere. IIRC they were only around £1 less than fully decorated, so not a big saving...

The unpainted model is Dapol 2F-038-000. They appear to be out of stock at most shops but sell for about £7 - around £4 less than a factory painted one.

Here are my two. Arrived today and really nice they are too. Mine are 030 and 031, and here they pose with my rather lovely NGS Hunslet in NCB livery. It is not very well known that "NGF" in fact stands for "Northern Granite Forwarders" a mineral company from oop norf.

That picture of the two N G F wagons just shows how tiny the Hunslett is I cant wait to see mine arrive and run it on the layout .
A friend ordered mine with his so I will just have to wait untill we can meet up so I can get my hands on it.
I am not meeting any one now untill after the 9th December as I have a Hospital procedure booked and if I catch a cold or worse then they wont go ahead and then I will end up on the bottom of the list .
So I will just have to be patient .

To all NGF 10 wagon owners, or potential owners:
I am compiling a spreadsheet of wagon numbers, forum names of owners, and location.
It is nothing complicated, as I'm not a XL whizz-kid!
If there is any interest I could post it on the forum at some point if all the moderators are in agreement with this.
I could also email it directly to anyone interested.
If someone knows how many have been ordered, and if the numbers are running sequentially, this information would help me; there seem to be gaps in the number sequence so far.
I'm waiting for my train shed to warm up a bit so I can go and run a few trains, and I've just got a SPROG so want to try it out with Decoder Pro.
Cheers

@Firstone18 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6899)
I get the impression Keith, from the information already posted, that the numbers were allocated to members, as and when the order was received, as I know mine was one of the first orders and I received 017 and 018. Then The Wagon Yard, by whatever method, produced the wagons and numbered them - maybe not necessarily in the order the orders were received. You then have the Postal service for different countries, (in my case, Royal Mail and An Post), to take into account, thereby giving you the gaps in the number sequence. It is just a theory of mine though.  :hmmm:. It will certainly be interesting to see just where the wagons end up.

I'm not 100% certain on this, but if you're using Excel for your spreadsheet, but you will not be able to post it on here unless you make an image of it.  I tried about a year ago for something else, and there was no way of doing it, probably because Excel is an actual program.

It occurred to me at work yesterday whilst looking at the modules stacking up in the yard for HS2 Colne Valley Viaduct, that if I took some Kato track, motive power and the NGF wagons and set them up on the beams we could possibly claim the NGF ran the first train on HS2.

... I've been told that the wagons for the freight operations on my Bedford layout are going to be eye-wateringly expensive ... so maybe I should just assemble a rake of these instead?

Graham - I had no intention of posting a map on the forum; my computer skills are not up to doing so! I started the spreadsheet just for my own interest, then thought others may also be interested. I need to be sure there are no objections from any members before I post the spreadsheet, and I was waiting until some of the gaps were filled in.
For those members who are outside the UK the postal delays will be considerable at this time of year, so maybe in the New Year when I have more wagon number/location details I will post the spreadsheet.
I hope any member who does not want details posted will have let me know by then. I have used forum names for the owner details.
Cheers

Wagon #068 has landed in Lindfield!  :claphappy:  :claphappy:

Happy for it to go on your spreadsheet @Firstone18 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6899) .

Cheers,

Chris

PS. I've just thought - it can go on a 'specials' train with my NGS white van from many years ago.

20 Tonner Nr. 027 is normally based near Spilsby in Lincolnshire but has today arrived in 'Switzerland' with an important light load, where a Christmas themed display is being prepared ahead of the festivities.

This tremendous gesture of international goodwill is fully appreciated by the 'Swiss', and it is hoped that the exchange (the Lincolnshire owners receive Stollen and Apfelkuchen in return) will be repeated for many years to come.

(spreadsheet compilers may add its location as either 'near Spilsby' or in 'Switzerland' as they see fit. :D )

I'm thinking about adding a load to mine, but I want something different from boring old coal. Something relevant to the forum would be good. The only idea I have had is used jokes going for recycling, but I'm not sure how to model those... Any ideas?

Mine were ordered 3 days before yours and arrived on the 6th December, so perhaps yours are not so late at this stage given the Christmas run-up and the increasing disruption due to Omicron if they were posted in the last week. However, I'd still suggest contacting them again on Monday to find out exactly when they were posted and with what carrier.

Here's hoping they'll arrive for you before Christmas.

Please don't panic if yours hasn't been noted as dispatched yet.  As long as you've had your initial email to say that your order has been confirmed then TWY know about it.  They dispatched another 21 wagons last week.

As I explained before, like most manufacturers in the N gauge community, this isn't their full time job and so they're making the wagons as fast as possible.  I think the initial orders of the first two weeks caught us by surprise!  Since that first week I've held off on advertising so that TWY can can up!

If you have been told that the wagon was dispatched, and you haven't had it delivered within a reasonable time, then of course get in contact with them.   :)  Otherwise, please wait a bit longer.  I really appreciate your purchases and apologise that delivery has been a bit behind.

UPDATE:

I've been informed that 121 have now been sent out as of today.  This brings us up to and including those purchased to the 29th November.  Numbers slowed down a lot after that, so there are only about 15 more to send.

I'll be advertising these again shortly, and I would appreciate you spreading the word.  :)  It should be included in the NGS Journal through The Wagon Yard, which will be lovely to see.

Wagon 118 has arrived in Stiltsbury (with an unusual consignment). Or Plymouth if we are being more geographically accurate!

I'VE BEEN CHEATED!

No Hipporhinosaurdiles in my delivery.

Maybe it's that we scatter Oofal Dust every night to scare off the effalumps and it also affected them?

Mine has just arrived and very nice it is too. Just in time for Christmas. I'm not sure what number it is as I wrapped it up without opening it and put it under the tree.

Coincidentally on Sunday I ordered some hippos off eBay. They were going to join the queue at the ice cream van but they might enjoy riding in the NGF wagon.

Who knew that the NGF would be producing a limited edition hippo wagon  :D

Further to my post at the beginning of the month, I can report that, somehow or other, the two 10th Anniversary wagons that arrived in Ireland have now made their way across the pond. Here they are on, (the far from complete), Dilymic Field -

I suspect that the very rich American gentleman who made an appearance in the latter stages of Averingcliffe may have had a hand in this - especially as he owns most, if not all, of the 'Burlington Northern' railway and has always had a soft spot for UK railways.  :hmmm:

Sadly my order has not arrived in time for Christmas, despite a despatch notice at the beginning of the week. It was to be a present to me from my daughter, but it is moot now as I have covid and daughter probably has as well. Happy days.
The arrival of NGF at Princetown will have to wait.

It's fantastic seeing these wagons hauled by all sorts of different traction all on different styles of layout. I'm tempted to order some more and get a little rake of them going! May need more hippos though!

Dizz and Trainfish:
OK, I may be a bit fuzzy from all the food and drink yesterday, but my tracker of wagon owners and locations tells me both of you have wagon No.60?? I may have mis-interpreted Trainfish's cryptic clue?
When you get time, can you check your wagon numbers please?
It may be there are two numbered 60!!

The other possibilities are that I read them wrong, am crap at maths, was also fuzzy/inebriated, can't read, blatantly lied, was talking several castrated male bovine animals (changed back by me)*

*Delete as appropriate.

It may be that mine actually add up to 123 (not 121 as previously advised I think) although 1 of them looks like it says 190 and the other looks like Z90 I think I was looking at them upside down and they are actually 061 and 062

Sorry about that old chap  :-[

Finally, the NGF wagon is transported down the branch to Castle Eden behind the new NGS Hunslet, also making it's debut on the branch.

It is accompanied by a companion NGF hopper. The Hunslet is an NCB loco, so the load in the hopper is appropriately coal. The loco is also Western region, so I thought it prudent to attach a toad.  :beers:

Hello folks

This is a piece of a post I made on my Deadwood thread a couple of weeks ago:

I purchased one of the NGF 10 year anniversary wagons (#95). It cost quite a bit more to have it shipped than the cost of the wagon itself, but that is part of the price of living in Australia. Here she is being towed by my Jinty which is a gorgeous little loco IMO.

I used to be able to show the thumbnail for these YouTube videos, but things have changed or I've forgotten how to do it (more likely).

Doesn't really matter, Ian. Video works fine.

Only thing is that an LMS loco hauling private owner wagons wouldn't have a BR brake van  :) ;)

I have an LMS brake van (grey), but the most important consideration for me is how all the colours match from one end of the train to the other.

I'm afraid not.  I think I only managed to sell 35 of them, if memory is correct.  They were produced by Robbie's Rollingstock.  I may get something else produced in a number of years, again, as the wagons have been very popular.

Numbers 154,155,156 and 157 have made their way along the sea wall at Teignmouth and on through Churston to work with 58, 59 & 60 (already logged) in Portreath, Cornwall (TR16).
May get a few more yet ;) :D

Wow! Now I know why mine hasn't arrived yet - you've exhausted the Wagon Yard staff!

(To be fair it's only been 5 weeks since I ordered and I understand they're busy)

That's a very pretty rake

Number 124 made it successfully to Orpington. It arrived empty, so I followed the notice printed on the wagon side and took it to Kenley.

15:59, it was a bit wet so I did not stay very long. I had lunch near the Bluebell Railway so it was on the way home, almost.

I think we can say the wagon has been a resounding success! Is it worth petitioning for an annual NGF wago/van of the year?

I would happily support that, by buying each and every one.!

Nice thought but I think
(a) it would lessen the impact of owning one
(b) it might drive 'the Boss' off his rocker for one every year.

Maybe one every 5 years? ;)

they are/have moved to new premises, so there may be some teething problems!

To all NGF 10 wagon owners:
A while ago I started compiling a spreadsheet of owners and where the wagons were located.
As of today, the highest number wagon is 182, 4 have been sent to the USA, 1 to Switzerland, 1 to New south Wales, 1 to Canberra, 1 to Melbourne, 1 to Princetown, and the first (and so far only) 10 wagon owner is Smartie6466.
If any other members have wagons they would like me to add to the spreadsheet, please let me know.
when Tank officially declares cessation of selling, i will be happy to provide the spread sheet on request and agreement of the moderators.
Cheers

195. 196. 198 and 199 arrived in Portreath whilst I was away over the Jubilee weekend and happy for them to be logged in the spreadsheet with my previous purchasses. That order was dated 26 Feb. I also had a nice note on the invoice apologising for the delay.....absolutely not a problem for me. I have another 2 orders of 4 wagons each placed in March and April that will get here eventualy.
I know that TWY has been/is exceptionally busy because, based on how good the NGF wagons are, our club placed an order for a limited edition runs of Hayle Railway Modellers N and OO gauge wagons and we have had to join the queue with everyone else.  TBH am not surprised: TWY seems to have identified a definite niche requirement that they are admirably filling with quality products.  Good luck to them
All the best

Pete

AdrianC - Yes each wagon has a number underneath.
I'm keeping a tracker of owner by NGF ID, a location, just the town name, NGS membership number, and layout name.
It is an XLS spreadsheet, so when I know all are sold I will post it the forum.
Cheers

Crikey, you may be out of luck. They had an 'end date' for sales, what is trickling out now, I suspect, is the last of the orders. Perhaps @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) can confirm the status.

Numbers 186,187,188, 189, 201, 202, 203 and 204 will now also reside in Portreath, Cornwall. Happy for them to be added to the data base alongside the other 11 please.  Cant imagine there can be any more outstanding now.
Going to look good on the club layout behind my recently renumbered and named Std 9f "Black Prince" :D

So far, the highest wagon number is 215, but there are 95 unclaimed numbers up to this last wagon number.
If any owners wish me to add their wagon(s) to the list, please message me or add a post.
If you do send me your number(s) a town location, layout name, and (if relevant) your N Gauge Society number would be appreciated.
Thank you.

If any owners wish me to add their wagon(s) to the list, please message me or add a post.
If you do send me your number(s) a town location, layout name, and (if relevant) your N Gauge Society number would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Do you have mine, number 56, on the sheet?  I can't remember if I sent it to you!  Let me know if not and I'll message you through the details.

Mine hasn't come in yet. I'm not in a rush, but I just pinged Emma to learn what the latest is and will let the group know.

When I placed my order I specifically requested the very last wagon in the production run, so when I learn what the number is I'll let y'all know!

Ross.

Wow!

Emma replied almost instantly to my email!

They've experienced some illness and a recent relocation of premises which have caused the delays, but they're working hard to get all the remaining wagons numbered and out to customers.

I do have yours listed, but for location I just have Aberdeenshire. If you can let me know a town I will amend this.
Cheers :beers:

My wagon arrived last October (2022). I couldn't at the time find the number, hence not posting it's safe arrival. I took it out of the box a few minutes ago and happened to turn the wagon over to look at the underside... :-[
Number 207 is at (layout still in early stages of construction and yet to receive a name).
Should've gone to Specsavers  :-[

Can I add you to my database please? If ok, can you let me know your location - nearest town will be fine if you don't want to give specific area.
Cheers

I asked for the very last one in the production run and back in June Emma shipped it to a friend in the UK who was collecting a bunch of bits & pieces together to save shipping costs to me. I just got the "care package" this morning and NGF wagon #216 is now happily enjoying the Florida sunshine!
