I've started my "Billy's layout" and am about to start laying the track !

The only loco I have is the Graham Farish Master Cutler V2 steam which I believe was still running in the early 60's, so I've decided to date the layout around then.

Obviously any locos that I buy need to be from that era but how can I find that out ?

So basically is there a reference point that will tell me what trains were in service around 1960 ?

Help please,

Rob.
They say that love is more important than money but have you ever tried to pay a bill with a hug ?

Actually this might be a good forum project. I've seen various 'Era' guides that list roughly when a particular engine or piece of rolling stock was likely to be running, but I've not seen a comprehensive time line or chart. I'm thinking a wall chart (or probably just a spreadsheet) of what goes where etc.

The manufacturers catalogues usually show an era number for each item to give you an idea of when stock was running, but there's always a bit of wiggle room, especially if you use the words "Heritage Line" or "Special Train" :)

For 1960 ish, you're looking at era 5 stuff (British Railways Late Crest) so you've got a good potential mix of steam and diesels.

Something like they used to have in the old Mainline catalogues as shown in this link?
