DJM have announced a BR HUO hopper wagon for N:

Nice wagon and certainly a welcome addition in 2mm, but personally I would like to see the Mermaids released in Dutch first also what is happening with the Turbot? Not overly fussed about the shark, as I have 2 NGS models.
Cheers
Anthony

Oooooh! I've not been this excited since Farish released the 16t steel mineral
Essential bread and butter wagon for much of my yoof, as seen mixed in with the lower HTVs, etc, in the above 1978 mixed freight 8)
All very nice, but such is the backlog of DJM promises that I'd prefer they started delivering on all the outstanding items first.
Cheers,
Alan

Amen to that!
:(
There is a little bit of information about these wagons here:
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/120874-br-diagram-1148-huo-245-ton-coal-hopper/ (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/120874-br-diagram-1148-huo-245-ton-coal-hopper/)
I think it's fairer to view DJM's project list not as promises but as proposals to be actioned as and when finance, opportunity and customer interest permit
Regardless why keep adding to the bottom of the list when nothing's coming off the top!
I admit to being responsible, against my own judgement, for replacing one of the last HUO workings in the Midlands with MGR HAA wagons. The coal flow to the one-time British Celanese plant at Spondon was the last regular trainload HUO working in the Nottingham Division in about 1980. Sad to see this impressive unfitted working bite the dust.
What was the geographical reach of these wagons?

They went everywhere. Kent coalfield in the South East. The whole of South Wales. Midlands. North East. North West. Scotland. Harder to find somewhere they never appeared.

Much obliged, Mike.
So Central Scotland - Ayrshire - WCML all fair game?
IMHO any announcement of new items is good news - especially when it comes from outside the top 2, then it's GREAT news. It means the hobby is alive and thriving. So I'm happy to wish this latest crowdfunding project every success.

East Anglia?
If they did appear here, I might be in.

So not west of Brighton and south of Bristol then?
I have to say I've never seen any - but I never went looking for them either.
My aggregate wagon of choice would be a "proper" PGA hopper.

I agree with you to a point. The irritation comes when, as previously stated, nothing comes off the top. How long has the J94 been on there? If it's not gonna fly, park it in the hangar rather than give people false expectations.

A man after my own heart! Cavalex are shrinking down their 4mm PGA into N which should be good.
The issue with PGAs is the sheer variety of them and that some are very different beasts to others. I think that a friend and I narrowed it down to 3 or 4 "main" families but even they had significant variants.
The variety makes them a really appealing wagon to do, but also a difficult wagon to tool!
Cheers, Mike

You're presumably aware of Cavalex models - who are doing a 4mm one and have threatened to shrink it too.
Edit: notice I was beaten by Mike, who actually has far more useful info, so ignore this...!

That's quite a specialised one too. Redland only (and its later incarnations).
I would really like a Yeoman PGA with the ladders in the right places and the right stuff underneath too.

Someone has just flagged up a flow of limestone from Cheddar probably on behalf of Foster Yeoman before Merehead was developed.

Yes but not in HUO hoppers. I was talking about PGAs which were everywhere in my modelled area. FY also used STONE labelled tipplers prior to PGAs. Got them!
But I may be in the wrong thread by now, wanting a proper PGA!

As the HUO has a dependency on crowd funding I can't see why it should have any impact on delivery of the "Dutch" Mermaids which Dave has always said have specific funding (his) allocated to the project or for that matter any of his other projects.

Roy is quite correct in that any crowdfunded models are just that, and do not impact on DJMs schedule of 'normal' models that have been announced. Updates are quite sparse, however and, for whatever reason, the NGF is not privy to the scheduling of further Mermaids, or any other model.

It's great that an alternative to the NGS 21T hopper kit and Dapol's poor (IMO) model is planned. Any rake of hopper wagons really needs variety to be prototypical.
I've just ordered a couple of packs of these, the link is http://djmodels.co.uk/?page_id=778 (http://djmodels.co.uk/?page_id=778)
Note that once you've submitted your requirements, you get an ON-SCREEN acknowledgment, NOT an e-mail at this stage!
I've just pre-ordered a pack of 4 also.
just ordered 2 x 4 packs :NGaugersRule:
Dave Jones has posted an update on progress of the crowdfunding on RMWeb (post #95):-
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/127705-new-oo-gauge-huo-n-gauge-245t-hopper-wagon-crowdfunded/?p=2925392 (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/127705-new-oo-gauge-huo-n-gauge-245t-hopper-wagon-crowdfunded/?p=2925392)
I've registered my interest - all four four-packs plus the single wagon. Don't tell the boss at home! :-X
If the OO gauge one is out selling the n gauge one by 12:1, and itself is only 18% of the way there, assuming the same quantities are needed for each, then he's only got 1.5% of the required volume for N gauge.
That seems surprising given the number of people saying they've ordered all 17 variants, one person alone should be that volume if it's 1000 needed, even if it's 3000 (as he gives as the break even figure for the Mermaids) then 3 people buying that number would see more than 1.5% progress made. :hmmm:
Not everyone will agree I'm sure but from what I understand there may be two factors that are impacting take up: -
1) All variants are post TOPS and that restricts the Market to a very specific blue Diesel era and I'm not convinced that in isolation it is that big in N. Now I know there will be those that say you just need to paint out the TOPS panel, but given the quality of RTR these days many, including me will want them as authentic as possible straight from the box including correct for period running numbers applied. Now before anyone says, I enjoy modelling and making things but it is a choice and my work, however good will not be up to the standard of factory tampo-printing,
2) Traffic flows - fairly restricted, a high capacity hopper not suitable for many locations and for non "Rule 1" users that may be impacting the take up on top of the above.
I hope they do make the cut as I am sure Dave would deliver another excellent wagon.
If there were any pre-tops, transition modellers may be enticed too, and we could have our Farish J39s or UM J26s lumbering along with rakes of them. I would buy a 4 pack to support the project as a "Rule 1" purchase were that the case.
My final thought is that in addition to all of the above restricting possible take up, the "rule off" date for the RevolutioN Class B tanks, plus soon to be released NGS Carflats and Hunslet shunters on the way in 2018 may just mean that funds are short with Christmas on the horizon people aren't looking to even express an interest at this point.
Roy
I'm sure there is a couple preserved on the MRC at Butterley that they run in a mixed goods train with Diesels and those stinky kettle things
I will have a better look next time I am there.
:D
Just heard from Dave that he has updated the HUO originally announced to a 1956 built one that lasted into the 80s thus suitable for transition and pre-TOPS modellers too.
CAD Cams to be released tomorrow on RM Web and Dave's website.
As people probably know he will be at Warley this weekend - Stand A13 according to the Warley website, I'll certainly be making a bee-line there amongst a long list of other places!
No connection to Dave's business just a modeller keen to do my bit to support his work in bringing new models to N.
Roy
Just ordered 4 x 4 packs as Dave has confirmed on the equivalent RMWeb thread that these are in pre-TOPS livery.
CAD was on display at Warley and is now also posted on RMweb.
The box of goodies that arrived at Dave's the day before Warely didn't have the expected HUO model so nothing hard.
Updates will be on RMWeb.
Les
Pictures now displayed showing the first 3D printed sample.

Ordered a big pile of pre TOPs, guess i'd better start saving now !
After a month or so of pre-launch hype Accurascale have just announced their first 00 gauge wagon - a diagram 1/148 HUO. That is the diagram number not the scale. This is already being tooled and will hit the market in a couple of months or so.
I have to wonder where this leaves the N gauge HUO crowdfunding project. Of course the crowdfunded 00 one may still go ahead and hopefully the N version can tag along, but if the 00 one falters, does that spell the end for the N wagon too? I suppose that Dave Jones is already past the research phase so the shared element of the whole project is already over. Provided there is/has been sufficient demand for the N wagon I would hope that it will continue.
One other issue is the prior funding of production now being requested from DJModels which may impact on the whole of the conventional DJM model programme.
I've often wondered if 4mm scale commissions have a negative impact on a model being made available in N. The Hattons/Heljan class 14 didn't stop Farish but I suspect we'll loose a few wagons along the way.
Steven B
A question to Mike & Ben. Given the demise of DJM plus the fact the Revolution already have a relationship with Accurascale then would this be an opportunity for Revolution to offer an N Gauge HUO? I was planning to purchase 16 Pre-TOPS (4x4-Packs) from DJM.

Hi David
It is definitely possible and something we've considered - our friends at Accurascale have asked us if we'd be interested. I think the only slight sticking point from our perspective is what is the rough demand for HUOs? We don't have a feel for how popular a product it would be! As one of those "mundane" yet produced in large numbers it is the sort of thing that either will be really popular or it could be that the market thinks it is another hopper. Perhaps we need to run a poll or expressions of interest campaign.
Cheers Mike
"Another Hopper"???
The N RTR market isn't exactly awash with the things for the era concerned. Bring'em on I say
In danger of going off topic, but if the Accurascale range is to be a catalyst, I'll be expressing an interest in HUOs, and the just announced PTA iron ore tipplers, later used as aggregate wagons by Foster Yeoman/ARC/Mendip Rail and for sand trains.
Mmmm, yes, the PTAs do look good! If too much more ARC/Yeoman stuff appears though I'm dangerously close to a OO gauge quarry shunting plank.

That automatic wagon loader project in the NGS Journal 3/19 would have a use for HUOs and PTAs/HOAs etc. on the N layout.
