Title: Alternative West Country and Friends
Post by: weave on October 16, 2018, 12:36:17 AM
Hi all,

For those not in the know there are a few of us on here who have 'through runnings' from layout to layout, each member having some of the same wagons and/or coaches. There are often back stories as to various scenarios with pics to accompany the story accordingly.

As this has increased I, and I'm sure some others, have lost track of who's who and where's where so I have decided to compile a list of PO wagon liveries and the fictional characters from the various layouts as an easy reference point.

These can be amended so please feel free to add anything and more importantly correct me where I have gone wrong. I'll put question marks where not sure or I've forgotten, leave blanks that need to be filled etc.

Once you have posted any corrections or additions I will let you know that I have corrected or added them and then you can remove your post so that the thread doesn't get cluttered.

Hi all,

Okey dokey. Looks like it's going to happen.

Now, it's going to cost the taxpayer millions of pounds and take years to finalise, oh no sorry, that's something else I'm working on at the moment :D.

Seriously, any ideas the best way to do it?

It occurred to me using a shared online spreadsheet with Google Documents might be an easy way for everyone to keep their lists up-to-date.

I don't have much in the way of locomotives in common, apart from the "Green Dragon", but do have a fair amount of coaching stock suitable for through-running.

Many thanks to all. I have all my locos. and diesel units in a spreadsheet and all my coaches. I have a text file, too, where I try to keep track of who has what coaches plus goods rolling stock, too. When I have some free time, I'll try to upload at least the locos. (However, many are away being DCC-fitted and / or detailed.)

I'd like to query David Tridinnick  (Landlord Cornish Arms, Port Perran) as I thought the "Cornish Arms" had a landlady and Tridinnick is also the surname of Tom Tridinnick  (Landlord Station Hotel, Trepol Bay) and Alice Tridinnick  (Landlady Station Hotel, Trepol Bay).

Lady Penelope, Penny, is the current Lady Trevelver.

The "Castle Estates" is located at Trevelver Castle at the end of a goods only (private passengers have been known to be in conveyed in various four-wheeled rail vehicles and the recently upgraded track can now take short bogie vehicles) "Castle" branchline from Cant Cove, near Wadebridge Cornwall, and is involved in producing, processing and marketing a wide range of agricultural produce. Associated with it, but still an independent company, is the "Castle Brewery" (a founder member of the Alliance of West Country Breweries; the Trevelvers are minority shareholders) which began as the castle's domestic brewery in medieval times. Another associated (the Trevelvers are also minority shareholders), but independent, company is the "North Cornwall Pasty Co." of Penmayne (the terminus of the line from Wadebridge via Cant Cove).

There are close trading and marketing relationships with other companies in Cornwall. These include: the "Headland Brewery", Port Perran (another founder member of the Alliance of West Country Breweries); James & Son Ltd, Granite Merchants, Port Perran; and Messrs Prisk & Jones (Fruit & Vegetable Wholesalers), Trepol Bay. There are others, such as a timber merchants and sawmill company at Port Perran, and a wagon repairers at Trepol Bay. (I'm sure that the landlady of the "Cornish Arms", Port Perran, can supply the details.)

In Somerset, there is the "Creech Brewery" and "Sam's Cider" plus, in Dorset, "Gunnings Brewery", Britminster, which are also members of the Alliance of West Country Breweries which aims to reduce costs (buying in barley, etc.), improve marketing (inc. cross-distribution of products) and, generally, enhance products and competitiveness whilst maintaining independence in the face of Whitbread's 'umbrella' expansion into the Southwest!

There is, of course, far more to tell such as the owners and principal directors of the advertising firm of Trevelver and Guillou (Wadebridge and London), alias our good friends, leading "Chelsea Girls", Sylvia and Eli who help these companies with advertising, branding, and marketing advice.

CANT COVE PEOPLE:

LORD AND LADY TREVELVER (Sylvia's parents)

Lady Penelope, of Trevelver Castle, high above Cant Cove. Her husband being Sir Charles.

Lord and Lady Trevelver, are the principal owners of the "Castle Estates" and minority shareholders in the "Castle Brewery" and the "North Cornwall Pasty Co."

Sylvia's beloved old Cornish widowed nanny, 'Nursie', from Fowey, who married the [nameless, at present] former regular driver of the 14XX, 1419, on the autotrain to / from Lostwithiel (on which 'Nursie' often took Sylvia when she was very small) who looks after the train crew as well as the "Girls" on trips but, unfortunately, is rather deaf and can fall asleep in the loudest bar.

CANT COVE & TREVELVER CASTLE FAMILY SEAT

The actual castle, Trevelver Castle, will be a very small low-relief model on the skyline. It's the home of the very wealthy local landowners, (a 19th century ancestor married a Peruvian heiress who inherited rich mines there) and the family were the prime movers of the Bodmin to Cant Cove (and, later Penmayne) Railway in response to the Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway.

The current Lady of the Castle, Penelope, is the model for Lady Penelope of "Thunderbirds" fame and is famous for hosting parties in both the family's beautiful Chelsea townhouse (so convenient for Waterloo and the 1AM overnight Newspaper and Passenger train with its Penmayne portion) as well as Trevelver Castle where the respective Chairmen of the BRB, SR, and WR all became close friends and she and her bon viveur husband, Lord Charles, are able to lobby to keep most of the "Withered Arm" not only open post-1963 but the Bodmin-Wadebridge to Penmayne section upgraded and linked by through trains to BOTH Paddington and Waterloo! (Hence the brand new SR Green Mark 2 First Corridor (FK) newly allocated to Penmayne for Waterloo expresses which Pauline converted for me). Lady Penelope's (G)WR enthusiast husband was able to lobby the North Cornwall Council (of which he is, surprise surprise, Chairman) to subsidise the remaining passenger train services and, most importantly, their promotion. Sir Charles is the Honorary Chairman of the local Supporters Club which cleans the ex-SR and ex-GWR locos used on summer services and pays for their coal delivered in GWR bogie and 4-wheeled wagons (which I have) from Somerset. (Hence, Penmayne loco. depot still services SR steam until the end in July 1967.)

Finally, the local brewery, which is the former Trevelver Castle Brewery, and justly famous for its award-winning Cornish ales, has also invested in continuing services both passenger and freight to distribute its local ales (via Cant Cove yard), as well as having a reciprocal arrangement with, among other breweries, Messers Bass Worthington to distribute theirs locally for all the thirsty summer tourists from the Midlands and North!

Their vivacious daughter, Sylvia, (I have a model of her on her Vespa scooter) organises summer pop concerts in the extensive Castle grounds (which brings in more rail-borne excursion traffic) as she knows all the famous British groups of the 1960s from the family's infamous Chelsea parties. Sylvia first worked in leading advertising agency, S H Benson Ltd., whilst her 'black sheep' brother, Gerald, runs the notoriously easy-going "Rock Restaurant" in Porthilly Cove, Penmayne, with his German model girlfriend, Brigitta, where the pop groups dine. (The German connection comes from the current Lord of the Castle, Sir Charles, who was a senior army officer in T-Force in North Germany at the end of WW2 where, through a chain of 'curious' events, in 1945, he 'liberated' a German railborne mobile crane which is now used in Penmayne Harbour [a lovely old Minitrix DB model], he being, of course, the Chairman of Penmayne Harbour Co.!

Sylvia's 'beau', Jeremy Corentyn Cador, the dashing naval captain (a VERY frequent guest at Trevelver Castle and often to be found conversing in her father's study with Lord Trevelver and the Head Butler, Huw Jenkins, for unknown, to her, reasons) is a cousin of one of the directors of the Shepherd Neame brewery, with which the "Castle" and "Headland" breweries also have a cross-trading agreement.

Cant Cove & Trepol Bay people: George Enderby, Brandon Williams, Marrek Prowse

George Enderby is the shy engineering genius who came up with the original design concept for the 15ft. Extra-Long Wheelbase goods stock which is proving such a success on the West Country "Fast Freight Network" (the now unknown, outside the SW, predecessor to BR's much later "Speedlink" concept). What is known is that he was one of the very best apprentices at Swindon Works rapidly rising to be a key member of the team that developed the excellent B4 passenger coach bogie before such Research and Development work was, to very considerable local disgust, taken away from Swindon and centralised at BR's new Derby Research Centre. He had also been involved in research into the rail-wheel interface prompted by the discovery that SWB goods stock derailed at anything above moderate speeds on Continuously Welded Rails (CWR). However, rather than move to Derby, he took early retirement back to his home town of Trepol Bay where he became the highly respected General Manager of the local Wagon Works. A regular of Trepol Bay's renowned "Station Hotel" where he sits at his reserved corner table doing the most difficult newspaper crosswords (rumour is that he also composes some) he became friendly with the "Castle Estates" top salesman, Brandon Williams, who makes it his business to know everyone and everything of interest. Brandon, in turn, introduced him to Marrek Prowse, the General Manager of the "Castle Estates", who then recommended him to the Alliance for Cornwall's Railways (ACR) where he came up with the design of the advanced, high-capacity Extra-Long Wheelbase goods stock. As BR proved uninterested (the "Not Invented Here" syndrome), the ACR contracted several firms of private wagon constructors to produce them, in Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset.

As mentioned already, he is a regular at the "Station Hotel", Trepol Bay, sometimes sitting at the corner of the bar quietly chatting to the landlord and his wife, Tom and Alice Tridinnick, or pondering over his favourite "Times" crossword and nursing a pint of his favoured summer tipple of Headland Brewery "Summer Lightning".

Everyone just knows of him as the 'Wagon Man'. Whenever he visits Cant Cove or Trevelver Castle, both of which are very rare occurrences, he is always treated with the utmost respect and "The Station Hotel", Cant Cove, has standing orders from the "Castle Estates" and "Castle Brewery" that anything he wishes to eat or drink is 'on the house' but he always eats and drinks very modestly.

CASTLE ESTATES MANAGERS

Marrek Prowse, the General Manager of the "Castle Estates".

The "Castle Estates" top salesman, Brandon Williams, (also working, on commission, for the Alliance of West Country Breweries, "Sam's Cider", North, West, and South Cornwall rail-served businesses; plus, outside Scotland, "Tullibardine" single-malt whisky, as a business 'hunter').

Cant Cove's official photographer, John Prynne, is the Chief Accountant of the "Castle Estates". He has an attractive [as yet nameless] female assistant.

The four which make up our imaginary CIWL Pullman "Star of the West" / 'L'etoile de l'Ouest', Brittany - Cornwall (via the West Porthsea Quay - Regleun train ferry) are: LIMA CIWL Sleeping Car 4787, LIMA 320333 Blue and White CIWL Pullman 4161, LIMA 320304 Blue CIWL Dining Car 3360, and LIMA Blue CIWL Voiture Salon 4162.

Marielle Kerbriant, Jean-Luc's tri-lingual (Breton, French, and English) Breton cousin, is the newly appointed SW England CIWL representative, and works with fellow Breton, Eli and Sylvia to publicise the CIWL Pullman "Star of the West" / 'L'etoile de l'Ouest', Britanny - Cornwall (via the West Porthsea Quay - Regleun train ferry) service, also finds Giles, very charming. Eli and Sylvia have added Marielle to their party so that she can promote the CIWL "Pullman" service to well-heeled folk planning a holiday in Cornwall and / or Brittany. Marielle has ordered a consignment of best Breton artisan cidre to be transported by Ferry Van directly for the coming festival.

Monique (the Parisienne "Chelsea Girl") is very good friends with the charming, Jean-Luc, who is the manager of the CIWL Workshop at Ostende, Belgium.

The CIWL General Manager (who is Monique's father's older brother) is an old friend of Lady Penelope Trevelver from her days as a 'deb' (debutante).

I will leave Cant Cove's sheep and goats for another time . . .

However, an important Cant Cove addition is Craig Avery who is notorious for flying very low over the River Camel in his Tiger Moth biplane. He is a retired Hollywood stunt pilot trained by Albert Paul Mantz (August 2, 1903 – July 8, 1965), known as Paul Mantz, a noted air racing pilot, movie stunt pilot and consultant from the late 1930s until his death in the mid-1960s. Fortunately, Cant Cove's official photographer, John Prynne, Chief Accountant of the "Castle Estates" is well used to Craig's flying.

The first pair is Sylvia and Eli.
The second pair is Jenny and Angela.
The third pair is Suzi and Monique.
The fourth pair is Belinda and Amanda.
The fifth pair is Susan, occasionally, and, sometimes, Enka Lou Lou.
There is also a single room for Sofia de la Vega plus a double bedroom for Sylvia's parents.

Sofia de la Vega
The latest addition to the "Chelsea Girls" is Sofia, the beautiful daughter of Jose Maria de la Vega, the mayor of Sant Cristofol (capital of the Principat de Guin). She has long, glossy black lashes framing her large brown eyes. She has a narrow nose set above full, shining red lips. Her thick black eyebrows arch in perfect curves across a smooth brow framed by her wavy black hair. Like all her features, her ears were in precise harmony with the whole: small and delicate. Her voice was husky, low and naturally seductive, ideal curves.

Susan Foreman
Her deep, captivating dark brown eyes captivate those who encounter her. They reveal the depth of her emotions and hold an unspoken wisdom. Her rich, dark brown hair falls in waves around her shoulders, framing her face with elegance, slim proportional body. Susan's London home, at 76 Totter's Lane, also known as Totter's Yard or Foreman's Yard, in Shoreditch, London.

Knowing that the "Chelsea Girls" can be entrusted with his unworldly (in all senses of the word) granddaughter, the Doctor is always happy for Susan Foreman (as she is known) to join her friends, leaving him time to pursue his own particular interests.
The girls refer to themselves as the 'Karadow' instead of 'the Chelsea Girls'. 'Karadow' is a Cornish term translated as 'the beloved.' They have adopted this name because it encapsulates the love they share among themselves, for those in their inner circle, and for those less fortunate. It signifies the profound bond and the values they collectively uphold. While others might refer to them as 'the Chelsea Girls', within their circle, they embrace the name 'Karadow'."

In early 1962, Sylvia was still the personal assistant to the Creative Director of S H Benson Ltd., a leading London advertising agency – through her mother, Lady Penelope's contacts. However, after meeting Elayne Guillou, of Port Regleun near St. Brieuc, Brittany, a very talented graphic artist, who Sylvia befriended at the agency, they became the founders, owners and principal directors of their own Trevelver and Guillou (Wadebridge and London, founded autumn 1962), with an initial investment from Sylvia's parents. In 1963, the agency was already profitable, initially helped by Lord and Lady Trevelver's contacts, but also due to its owner partners' skill, knowledge and enthusiasm, taking care of much of the marketing for the Association for the Promotion of Cornwall's Railways, the Alliance of West Country Breweries (although individual breweries still preferred to keep their own agencies, advertising and marketing staff, the "Castle Brewery" being the exception), the "Castle Estates"; the "North Cornwall Pasty Co.", Penmayne; Messrs Prisk & Jones (Fruit & Vegetable Wholesalers), Trepol Bay; and Giles Roskrow's Chelsea wine and spirits importing business including working with his continental suppliers. They also worked on branding (Eli's graphics) for "Sam's Cider", the "Creech Brewery", "Gunnings Brewery", Britminster, Dorset Fine Ales, and even some local BR WR and SR publicity material (thanks to Eli's outstanding skills as a graphic designer). In fact, business is so great, that they have taken on two of their 'Chelsea Girl' friends, Angela Evans as Finance Director and given her some shares and 'Big' Belinda Anderson as secretary/receptionist. The other 'Chelsea Girls', apart from Monique, who works as a fashion model, do some regular part-time promotional work for their agency's clients.

Captain Jeremy Corentyn Cador, the dashing Royal Navy Captain (Sylvia's 'squeeze') -- tall, well-built clean-shaven 30-year-old man with a light tan. He has chestnut brown hair swept back from his forehead, sea-green eyes, and a chiselled face.

Giles Roskrow, the Chelsea wine and spirits importer (ex-SAS)

George (older brother of Sylvia, reprobate; German hippy wife, Brigita; publisher of the risque gentlemen's magazine, "Avant". Manages a pop group, 'Caligula's Ass'.

Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart will be another note.

Jim Ellis and Dave Partridge of the "Western Morning News"

Lord and Lady Poldain of Port Perran Manor
Sir David and Lady Rosemary Antrobus-Chairman of the Headland Brewery
The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall: Sir Alan Walton-Parfitt and his wife Celia.

The name of the 'Fat Controller' is William Wickham. Despite his public school education, as was usual for future railway management, William, who is a skilled engineer with a depth of knowledge in matters civil and mechanical, was apprenticed with Sir William Stanier at the Great Western Railway's Swindon works, which gave him a great and abiding love of all things Great Western. Meeting a local girl while on holiday, in Brixham, Devon, William was delighted to be promoted to a series of management positions at BR's Plymouth HQ which enabled the married couple to move from Swindon. Due to his enjoyment of good food and drink (his wife being a trained Cordon Bleu chef), he soon acquired his nickname. He is respected as being very firm but fair in all his judgements.

G'day alternative friends :)

I am slowly producing the the Tullibardine Whisky Vans (still not entirely happy with how the transfers are working on the Trix Shoc Vans though).... i have 3 so far and from the vans sent to me by CiP over the past year or so, I have 6 in total in the production line (I had thought to give them all the running number 5, though I don't suppose that really matters) ....

The question is.... where do they need to be sent to?

Many thanks, Andrew. A new alternative (not previously available) would be the NGS kit Vanwide VEA vans as they have smoother sides but, then, someone would have to build them. I'll PM you the addresses. There is, apart from you and I (so that's 2), Brian (Mito), Laurence, Martin, and Pete. I don't know if John wants one as they are BR era vans? There are also several others, like Keith, who might be interested. I do have a couple of spare Minitrix BR Grey Shoc Vans and can look for more on eBay?

A very limited variety of types of vans would look good on your layout. The Minitrix vans would look better with vacuum brake hoses added. (I think the cylinders are already part of the moulded underframes?) The old Graham Farish ex-LNER flat-sided vans could be another alternative but would, again, require vacuum braking. The Peco Standard vans would have the same problems for transfers as the Minitrix ones. The flat-sided Peco vans would need the steam-heating fittings on the ends removing. The Vanwides would be a good alternative / addition, though. Having all the Minitrix ones with '5' on the side shouldn't be a problem.

Seriously Andrew, if they could have come over on the train ferry I'm up for one but no worries if there are not enough or it would be ludicrous coming to France.

Just topped up my Calvados with a small tear  ;)

Sorry, Chris (Weave) they are SWB vans so most unsuitable for Ferry traffic. A Continental LWB van could be reliveried though? I imagine Andrew may well ahve a few suitable generic ones?

Hi all,

It's been a while for anyone on here. I hope people still find it useful. I do as I can't remember my own people. In the recent Sant Pau de Mar stories I nearly had Aina getting it on with Nicolau until I checked and saw and then remembered that they were brother and sister . This aint Game of Thrones   :D.

Anyway, have added a few more characters to my Sant Pau de Mar layout on here after the recent stories so just thought that if anyone wants to add or edit any for theirs please let me know here.

The whole first post still needs a bit of a tidy up and speaking of tidy ups, @Chris in Prague (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2895)  and Andrew ( @Milton Rail (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4934) ), if you don't need those posts that are on here could you please delete them to avoid clutter. I sound like my late mother but you know what I mean  :) Obviously, if they are important or I haven't addressed them, transferring names etc. please let me know.

Thanks chaps,

Cheers weave  :beers:

Good morning, Chris (Weave)

Thanks for the updates. Actually, rather than reduce my entries, I should add some characters either already mentioned or soon to be! There's a lot of people in the West Country, you know. 8-)

Just be sure, it is Catalia with an 'i'?

It is difficult to keep track of who is who, I know and the correct spelling of Continental names.

Hi Chris,

What I mean is deleting posts that I have transferred the names from to the main one at the beginning and any others that are not that relevant anyway to avoid clutter. Hope makes sense.

It is Catala (there is no I), that was a typo on my part the other day.

Hi Martin and the crew,

You don't have to keep the newcomers down if you think that's what I mean by clutter. The more people the merrier, 200 characters if you want, but when I've transferred them to the first post I'll let whoever has posted know that they've been transferred and then when that person reads my post, they can delete theirs and then I'll delete mine. Otherwise we'll be on page 10 and I'll have completely lost track.

Hope that makes sense. Might of got the wrong end of the stick, Martin, why you are keeping your newcomers down but the above bit is to clarify 'the clutter' I'm talking about.

Cheers weave  :beers:

No worries Weave , it's the afternoon Theakston's that's causing the problem. That and a day sitting fishing in the sun - probably affecting my head.
No, only reason I want to keep the characters down is that I have trouble keeping up with them all.
There will be more to come though.
Cheers

An overlooked addition, young Lizzy in the Wadebridge Station Refreshment Room, the girlfriend of young fireman Davie Thomas. [Ill leave Martin to give her her surname. 8-) ]

Ahoy, me hearties.

With there be talk of 'through runnings' on the Forum I was looking up the PO wagon liveries as I always forget what they are and what I've got.

Anyway, it's been a while so, as I have a bit of time on my hands, was wondering if anyone had any updates, rolling stock, characters, places etc. that they want adding to the first page introduction or even amending of old info.

I hope people still find it a useful reference point. I do as I still can't remember my own characters let alone anyone else's.

Just a thought.

Looking forward to any additions or new ideas and always enjoying your layouts.

Thanks Chris (IP).

Although I still can't go up to the train room I am putting some thought into how the through wagons/container thing works regarding the ferry to Port Regleun and beyond as was never quite sure.

I'm about to get some International wagon decals with anchor symbols and the like. The first wagon to be made 'sea worthy' is Andrew's (@Milton Rail) Tullibardine whisky wagon which I believe is different to everyone else's as slightly longer and more suitable for ferry travel ??? maybe.

Not sure then if the other containers come over on UK wagons adapted for sea travel and European railways or on SNCF conflats with the containers transferred from/to UK wagons at Porthsea Quay.

Another thing to think about.

Hi Martin, looking forward but no hurries.

Cheers weave  :beers:

Hi Chris (Weave)

I wish you a speedy recovery. I have wanted an International wagon decals sheet with anchor symbols and the like for a long time. Can you buy a second?

To answer your questions:

1) Yes, your version of Andrew's (@Milton Rail) Tullibardine whisky wagon is a Continental (not UK BR ShocVam) LWB van.

2) The Containers would be lifted on and loaded onto dockside flat wagons. The containers were stowed on deck on the ferries. So you only need SNCF flat wagons. I have some NGS Container kits to make up more variants awaiting painting.

Stay safe and well!

Hi all,

I've just edited the old Sant Pau de Mar layout name to the new Estepera Nord one as the layout has changed. The characters are the same but they have just moved to the city with the El Gaitero restaurant overlooking Estepera Bay and the girls now having a stall in the market overlooking the station. Not sure where the lad's bar will go but I'll find a way.

Will update the Estepera Nord thread later today regarding the market area and the Sausage Festival in September. As an intro here though, Estepera has a yearly Sausage Week (Setmana de Salsitxes) in September and this year (1964? can change but around that era) 'guest' vendors from Spain, France, Majorca, Sardinia and of course the UK are cordially invited.

It is believed that a specially adapted 'Palethorpes' wagon plus other wagons will be transported via the West Porthsea - Port Regleun train ferry next month, leased by Palethorpes to include not only their products but other sausages from around the UK.

A couple of CIWL coaches have also be laid on for vendors and staff so any names (character/company) for pre booking greatly appreciated.

It'll probably be the last week in September as I am a bit behind with the venue.

Hope that sounds good.

Cheers, weave  :beers:

Thanks, Chris (Weave). BTW, I checked and you should have received, in May 2019, Preiser 79075 Figurines Girls N, alias the "Chelsea Girls". (John Frater should have them, also.)

We can add that, in Cornwall in 1963, Bertie Poppingham is in his early fifties and is accompanied by his friend, 'Snooper Johnny' James.

Additional characters to add are, I think, Sir Alastair Cadwallader, the Duke of Derbyshire; Sergeant Tremaine and PC Wontey of the Perranwell area.

Hi all,

A question for Chris @Chris in Prague (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2895) regarding the Chelsea Girls. Which ones, if any, are single? I know Sylvia is with Captain Jeremy Corentyn Cador but wasn't sure about the others and didn't want to cause any scandals in the recent story (although Eli was being a bit fruity  ;)).

Anyway, I should have asked before so thought I'd ask now for future stories (there might be a little vineyard layout on the horizon  :hmmm:).

Cheers, weave  :beers:
Title: Re: Alternative West Country and Friends
Post by: Chris in Prague on July 07, 2022, 09:47:04 AM
Thanks, Chris (Weave). To date, the only recognised couple is indeed Sylvia Trevelver and Captain Jeremy Corentyn Cador. However, as Giles Roskrow is Jeremy's best friend and Eli (Elayne Guillou) is Sylvia's best friend and business partner in their own advertising agency, Trevelver and Guillou (Wadebridge and London, founded autumn 1962), Eli and Giles do spend a lot of time together and are good friends. Whether their relationship will develop beyond that is, at present, unknown. Giles enjoys the bachelor life in 'Swinging London' and Eli is a very independent young woman who also enjoys an active social life and the personal freedom that life in London (unlike a small town in Brittany) provides her.

Marielle Kerbriant, the SW England CIWL representative, who works with fellow Breton, Eli and Sylvia to publicise the CIWL Pullman "Star of the West" / 'L'etoile de l'Ouest', Britanny - Cornwall (via the West Porthsea Quay - Regleun train ferry) service, finds Giles, very charming, a fact of which Giles is well aware, however, he is not ready to settle down, yet. Some of the other, more minor, 'Chelsea Girls' have personal favourites among Giles' friends, Jim Tremayne, Phil Courtenay, Tom Carew, and Andy Tolverne.

Monique (the Parisienne "Chelsea Girl") is very good friends with the charming, Jean-Luc, who is the manager of the CIWL Workshop at Ostende, Belgium. The CIWL General Manager (who is Monique's father's older brother) is an old friend of Lady Penelope Trevelver, Sylvia's mother.

Another "Chelsea Girl" is, of course, Sofia, the beautiful daughter of Jose Maria de la Vega, the mayor of Sant Cristofol (capital of the Principat de Guin). Her voice was husky, low and naturally seductive. She also is determinedly free.

Lastly, there is Catala and Christian who certainly spent some time together as a couple. However, Catala could not even get Annabel to confirm Christian's real name.

However, Martin needs to update with the new characters in his excellent tales.

Bill Truscott, the Wadebridge Yardmaster, is a highly respected and popular railwayman in North and West Cornwall. He is known for his abstemious and hard-working nature and his ability to get along with all railway employees, whether of the (Great) Western or Southern persuasion. Whenever anyone has a problem, they automatically look to him for help, whether it be the Wadebridge stationmaster, the Wadebridge shedmaster, or ordinary railwaymen. Bill's dedication to his work is evident from the fact that he worked his way up through every department, and if it had not been for his terrible accident, he might well have become a senior manager. The accident was caused by him running after a runaway goods train on Trepol Bay Harbour incline to try to pull down the brake levers.

Despite the accident, Bill remains humble and continues to serve as Wadebridge's Yardmaster, with a crippled leg and a fine oak walking stick presented by the company. Bill's ambition to be a railwayman was evident from a young age, and he joined the Southern Railway straight from school as a lad of fourteen. He is a good Christian gentleman, and Methodist lay preacher whose character is beyond reproach. Bill Truscott is a widower; his beloved wife Gracie passed away in the '51 flu epidemic.
