All

Be wary I bought this and the model is very poor quality front wheel is wrong way round rear wheels very flimsy and the tail came off when I tried to fix it to the stand.
Has anybody else had these problems with this or any other of these models?

My model is excellent.  No quality issues that I found - apart from front undercarriage!

In about 1960 (ish) there were plastic planes this shape that were launched with a really strong rubber band - and for about 1 shilling outflew anything short of a radio controlled glider. Naturally the red ones were the best.

Wonder if they turn up on eBay?  And then there was the Kellogs submarine that worked with baking powder------------------

I've got a die cast one I bought off eBay last year, I was surprised at how heavy the model is. It's also quite a big 'plane.

I have to confess that one of the main reasons I bought it was because I like its shape  :) I now have to think of a way to justify it on my layout.

Veronica

can't comment yet on the quality, picked mine up on the way to work this evening, so will remove from the packaging when I get home in the morning.

re Tank's flat cars, perhaps they are going to be delivering these to his airfield

The 12in:1ft Vulcans were immense beasts - In the late 70s I was at a Bristol Aerospace Open Day for the employees and families of BAC and Rolls-Royce at Filton Airfield. There was a Vulcan on display and you could get about 200 people under the delta wing. This we found out as it was heaving it down with rain and this was the (emergency) designated place to wait for the throng in the hangar to thin out so you could get in and see the displays therein...

I worked for Avro (BAe) at Woodford in Cheshire for many years which is where the Vulcans were made.  We had our own specimen, XM603, which was parked outside as a restoration project for retirees.

I nearly drove my car into it by accident one morning - a bit sleepy, didn't notice it being towed around the peri-track.

Although the factory has now very sadly closed  :( the aircraft is still visible on Google Earth -

53 deg 20 min 17.96 N
2   deg 9 min  32.14  W

If you wanted to create this scene you would have to paint it white.

Cheers  Jon     :)

Tin triangles!!!  Now that takes me back a bit..

Very large, very impressive and when applying full power straight off the runway, VERY VERY (AWESOMELY) noisy...

They don't make 'em like they used to....

Memories, what memories...

Thanks (takes off rose-coloured spectacles and puts them away - at least for the moment).

Javilinfaw7

Resistance is futile...

OTOH, if 'Big' is the problem, there is always the Avro 707 (assuming someone, somewhere has produced a 1:144 model of one :) :) :) )

still looking for a 1/144 Gloster Javelin.

A VERY quick i'net search indicates that there are 1:144 Jav' models 'out there', but I haven't been able to locate an exact manufacturer.

HOWEVER, there is a '1/144 Gloster Javelin Fighter Aircraft' on E-bay at the moment- the asking price being USD13.06.  The pic isn't very informative, but  the model is on a stand and seems to be of either a prototype or a very early FAW1 - no armament fitted.

Perhaps worth a look?

Hope this helps.

Yes, seen her twice. :heart2:

I remember seeing a Vulcan fly at the SouthEnd show in 1989 when I was 6-7 years old.  The loudest thing I'd ever heard!!!!!!!  Absolutely terrific aircraft....and to think that most of the 'technology' inside it consists of pulleys and levers.   :worried:

I remember being on holiday in Wales - climbing mountains etc. and watching the Vulcans fly down the valleys BELOW where we were standing...

Oh yes and the Phantom pilot who flew by my sister twice to get a second look...

Ah.... the Vulcan. I'm not sure if I have related this before on the forum, but if I have and you have seen it, bear with me.

Way back in Jan or Feb 1971 (I think Jan), I was spending a couple of days back at my parents' place in Houghton-le-Spring, Co. Durham as a break from college. This particular morning, I heard the sound of a relatively low plane, and went out to take a look.

To my astonishment, it was a Vulcan, and as I watched it pass overhead, saw a bright flash. It began making funny noises, and as I continued watching it heading south, saw black smoke streaming out of it, watched it start curving to the east, and then plummet downwards.

An old guy who would head past our place to go and play dominoes at the local pub at that time every day was walking by, and I said "Look, LOOK! There's a plane crashing!!" He said, "Yeah, right" and just kept walking.

I ran inside and got the only camera I had, a Kodak Brownie with B&W 127 film, and took a shot. I ran round to the neighbour and he didn't believe me either. Ten mins later he came running in: "Yeah, I heard it on the radio!"

Anyway, I was worried that it had come down on the town (my mother was at work there at the time) but it crashed at a coal mining village (Wingate) to the east of Durham. It hit a paddock, and the crew had bailed out, so there were no casualties.

The picture I took only showed a speck in the sky, but I enlarged it myself back at college and you can clearly see the plane going down. Unfortunately I haven't got it these days, though I have a feeling I brought it to Oz and it could be here somewhere.

Maybe someone has more info about that incident?

Cheers, George.

Wikipedia...  On 7 January 1971, Vulcan B.2 XM610 of No.44 Squadron crashed after fatigue failure of a blade in the No. 1 engine that damaged the fuel system and led to an engine fire. The crew abandoned the aircraft safely, and the aircraft crashed harmlessly in Wingate.

Ah, beaten to it by Leo!

I love the Vulcan bomber, I think it was the film Thunderball that first brought it to my attention.  It is such a distinctive and beautiful shape.

I didn't choose my current flat because it is close to the home of a running (if not flying) Vulcan but it is one of the reasons why I love living here.  I'm close enough to hear it when those Bristol Olympus (IIRC) turbojets are fired up!

Thanks for asking, but 'fraid not; the Antipodes during the '60's when AOCFEAF used to send the occasional example south 'to show the flag and impress the locals...' (and leave a few 'bits' behind on runway's, 'just for effect', as examples of how good the the RAF was at 'low flying').

Them wus the days.... :) :)

I'd have been there too.  I rarely missed a Southend Airshow. back in the days when there was a flying programme to rival any of the paid events.  Standing on the pier when the Vulcan went vertical right overhead was a memorable experience.  ;)

I think the only thing I've heard that was even remotely close to a Vulcan at close range (with in the bounds of the same airfield/show area), Concorde on the end of Filton's runway.
Both of them would make you feel physically sick due to the sound waves penetrating your body and giving your guts a good pummelling.
Next after those two would be a Harrier in a hover.

Was lucky enough to see it after the Dawlish airshow last year as it was heading home.  Now we do get Hercules coming over at 500 feet and they're pretty loud but they're nothing compared with 558 at the same height.  Hope it comes again this year.
