This includes Steam Engines, Diesels, EMU's, DMU's, DEMU's....  You know what I mean.

I'm with you in the 75 category, tank.
Mine are split 60% UK, 30% german, 5% Dutch, 5% other

I also have hundreds of buses, although I am thinning my fleet via eBay to free up space and funds.

Well, that's a lot of buses!  My Grandad loved model buses and collected them....he worked at the old Godstone depot in Surrey for Green Line.

That is true dedication!

I think if I spent all day working on buses (or trains for that matter), the last thing I'd want to see when I got home was lots of miniature ones.

I am in the early 70's after a quick count up with most of my stuff from the Poole era Farish range although I have started adding to it again lately including 3 class 60's of which I am trying to get the full set that Farish have produced (4 remaining I think).

60 061 Alexander Graham Bell in Transrail
60 084 Cross Fell in Transrail
60 081 I.K.B in GWR
These are all available at the moment so will be easy enough to get.
60006 in British Steel Blue was the hard one to get as no body had it in stock, but i managed to get a new one from Glasgow yesterday  :)

Nothing wrong with 8....I got my first train over 15 years ago, and it's only the last 4 years I've gone mad on buying them.  I've slowed down a lot since I realised I'd have to DCC them all in the future.   ;D

True Mustermark.

A loco that doesn't run well isn't a loco. I've had a few in my time, and I don't tolerate them. I "score" everything out of ten, and don't tolerate anything less than 8 (runs OK, might need an initial push, or might be noisy).

As I am totally rubbish at all but the most basic repairs, they either get a new chassis, or get a few cogs removed to convert them into dummies for double-heading or siding fillers. Failing that, they go on eBay as spares/repairs, where they are invariably bought by a very nice chap in Paisley who fixes and resells them.

I do have a soft spot for Japanese trains, thanks to PC games which feature them, but having waaaay too much stock already, I really can't add yet another country to my fleet.

I do, however, use Japanese chassis to replace knackered British ones under my DMU/EMUs.

Well, I've got too many.
Plus one that's a work in progress but nearly finished. And another that's a work in progress and barely started. (It's a 4-6-2+2-6-4 Garratt. It needs two new motors that I can connect without using the cardan shafts (so that's a little cross piece on the end of the shaft) and then a whole lotta stuff making out of plasticard. And some more cutting off the chassis (which are a pair of Dapol Britannias) And I've got another couple that just need minor cosmetic tweeks... (oh, one of them needs chipping)

Poliss - good idea having a photographic record like that, could be useful in event (heaven forbid) of having to make an insurance claim. I have an excel file, but that probably wouldn't satisfy a distrustful loss adjuster.

we should all do that. asap.

I just took photos of my stock today as I realised I was buying stuff while getting my layout back up and running without really thinking what I've got already.

So apart from giving me a useful insurance record I can take a look at the photos when I'm tempted to go on e-bay and help control the urge to bid on something that looks a good deal :)

Its funny, that happened to me...it sort of creeps up on you!  I number all of my locomotives for some purpose having to do with assigning DCC CV's, but last year when I basically put everything away to work on the layout, I was at #18...somehow in the past year I've gotten up to well over #30!  I may need help!  :P

Hi tadpole, I've tried therapy, hypnosis and even modern image stuff, but I just love Westerns :smiley-laughing:.  They are what I remember from my trainspotting days at the age of 11 or 12.  But it's a bit mad in N gauge because you can't tell them apart without a magnifying glass!  I will have my own version of Laira in my diesel depot.  I don't need too much encouragement from mikebillabong!

I think the baffled look on my wife's face said it all...  "But they're all the same!?"  "No, they've all got different names."  Sounded a bit lame when I said it and she just looked at me and shrugged.  But then she can't tell a BR Blue Western from a BR Blue 47!  She's still going to get me Western Venturer for my birthday when Dapol release it - I have already pre-ordered it from Hattons .
Title: Re: How many trains have you got?
Post by: tadpole on March 12, 2011, 09:02:12 AM
Do they all look the same? There's a huge variety of livery (maroon, green, desert sand, blue) and warning panel size combinations.

I have to say I prefer the Poole ones to the current ones. There's something funny about the cab windows on the new ones.

I have very fond memories of these too. Although warships thundered past our village, I had to go to reading for my western fix.
Title: Re: How many trains have you got?

Nope, they are all BR Blue except Fusilier's original incarnation in maroon - D1023 was the only Western outshopped in the month I was born.  That one is just for show really as I'm modelling 1973-75 by which time they were all blue.

Hi Guys,

Ive been collecting since I was 12 years old, through influence from my Dad. My first loco was (and still is) the minitrix flying scotsman in apple green. This was a birthday present from my parents. Since then I have been collecting N -Gauge locos non stop. When I was a kid I used to get engines as presents for x-mas and birthdays, now im a grown man with a job i buy alot of stuff myself even though my parents and wife still get me n-gauge gear. My collection is varied as my Dad and mum used to buy me alot of steam engines because that was what my Dad grew up with.

Ive got alot of diesels mainly from the BR sectorisation period as this is what I remembered as a kid. i also i have a small collection of german and european locos, as I lived in europe for 3 years and i was lucky to be able to do some spotting in various dutch and german stations and as a result go to euro model shops and buy good stuff at good prices.....

I also have two US loco's (diesels) as I admire the American railroad mentality. I have only one rule with my collection, I run any engine of any era on my layout BUT I always ensure the rolling stock pulled by my loco is prototypical. You wont find a Black 5 pulling a rake of Seacow ballast hoppers on my layout! (each to their own though)

I intend to post some pictures of my modern British image layout soon (W.I.P), here are a few samples of some of my collection in the meantime:

I have around 16 loco's, but for example my class 67 has at least 2 different rakes it can operate on, PCA wagons, coaches, containers, whereas some like my class 91 (GNER) only ever runs with it's own coaches  :)
Title: Re: How many trains have you got?
Post by: haeckmaen on March 21, 2011, 10:52:20 AM
I can understand mustermark with the westerns I tried the same with the warships during the trains4u auctions but modest bidding made me stop at two further 42's. When I realized some Westerns were going up as far as GBP 75 or more I decided to wait until the Dapol release since I need it DCC anyway.

This means I currently have nine locos, four Warships, a maroon Western, a green Hymek and a blue 46 all DCC for the Penzance layout. For the older DC layout, it's a Poole Prairie and a 3MT.

I'm generally more interested in filling the gaps for a prototypical operation than in amassing what catches my fancy (okay this can have the same effect :D) so besides the western I'm going to get me a 08 and a 47 preferably blue renumbered pre tops.

Two new additions to my fleet are the Blue Tiger in the HVLE livery by Mehano and something more closer to home. I just sniped a Triple-Grey Class 90 from Farish and I believe its the old poole chassis as its an older box ;). Not bad for £38! :P.

I've just changed my vote! I'd put down 15+ but I've just done a stock check and I have 28!

Most are steam but I do have 2 x DMU's and 5 diesels.

I have 8 original Hornby Minitrix locos (most of which were purchased in the late 70's, early 80's) and they still run like new!

Edit : make that 29, just found a Class 47 diesel that I forgot I bought on e-bay that was included in a Royal Mail set!

So far I'm up to 37 with another 3 on pre order (121 Bubble, Std 5MT and Ivatt Mogul) but still haven't got the layout built to run 'em on, although I do have a large test oval. I convince myself that I collect anything under 50p in a bottle and use this for funds but lately that hasn't been the case as there is just too much coming out I like. For instance, I just spent over £200 on the County Rolling Stock weathered 21T hoppers to go with my Dapol weathered 9F. I also pre ordered the Farish 1960's TPOs to go with my recent purchase of the Class 40 (Great train robbery stuff). I have rakes of green, maroon, blood & custard, chocolate & cream Mk1's and have the Farish Pullmans on pre order (anyone know where I can get a Pullman brake as Farish aren't releasing that??). I also have rakes of vans, coal, permanent way and fuel tank trucks. The idea is to model 50's steam and be able to switch everything to 60's green diesels, so my loco fleet is roughly 50/50 kettles and chip fat fryers (as elsewhere described). I look at Batty Moor S & C layout for true inspiration, along with Chee Tor, which is the best layout I have seen for the 'landscape being there first' status (both can be seen on YouTube)

According to the coaches article, on the Goods and Not So Goods website, Farish did produce Pullman brake end coaches.

So before I do, I have a question
What defines a train?
You see I could currently create 46 trains (a loco and coaches or wagons, or DMU)
However, I could increase this to nearly 60 as some are currently joined formations but then will be without a loco on some of them (awaiting DCC conversion)

I meant loco's, engines, diesels......not necessarily whole trains.    Thanks for pointing that out.

Hmmmm - what defines a train? In my days (and still in my head) a train is a collection of railway vehicles WITHOUT/WITH a locomotive. I have never described a locomotive as a train, as a train is something a locomotive pulls. Having said that, Princess Kate recently pulled a train and I wouldn't call her a locomotive (she had no running number but did have the shed code 1B denoting Buck House MPD).

I don't normally vote on any polls on websites, I just like to see what the general concensus is
Therefore I am unable to view the results

Gets my counting finger out, just to see how many "trains" I currently have...
46 trains (loco plus coaches / wagons or DMU) plus a further 23 locos and 1 DMU (awaiting DCC conversion)
I therefore selected 50+ which seems fair
My target was always 60

I have four:

Farish Class 37 (swapmeet, £35)
Farish Class 101 (Ebay, £24, in for refurbishment at BR Lines)
Bachmann U36-B (Ebay, £20)
Kato Budd RDC single railcar (Ebay, £44, hopefully the most I'll ever spend on a single loco)

All except the Class 101 are good as new and run superbly.

The only turkey I bought was a brand new Class 04 with dodgy pickups, I didn't want to mess about so it's gone back. I'm not sure I like something that small anyway.

Geez this is hard...

Do I count my American Flyer collection I inherited from my Father in Law?... cause thats around 25+ Steam and say 20 Deisel.
so lets start at 45 S-Scale (not to mention boxes and bloody boxes of freightcars and box cars.

Then on to my N Gauge. (in storage.. so I can't be exact

Japanese : Around 12 complete trains
European :  7 Locomotives (e18, e44, e103, Ce 6/3 plus a few others and 1 steam)
British : 5 Steam, 8 Diesel
US : 7 Steam, At least 20

So say, 49 N Scale (probably over 50.. I've undoubtedly forgotten a few)

I think as it doesn't say how many "N" scale trains (or locomotives!) I'm going to assume I can combine totals :)

so call it 95 total :)

No wonder I'm missing them in storage! :( .. feeling lonely without my trains!

Hi Lawrence,
The Budd RDC is a New Haven. I say I got it from Ebay, but it was actually a Buy It Now from Southampton Model Centre, listed as used but I rang them and it was sold to them by a collector and never run. I saw Gaugemaster had them for over £60 brand new so I thought this wasn't bad, was I wrong?
The U36-B is CSX. It was my first US N gauge buy, more or less just to try out, and I like it, slow running is superb.
I'm tempted to model a complete US small layout but need to do a bit of research first because I've no idea hardly what goes with what...another topic.

Rod, if it is mint and runs well then £44 is probably about top dollar, but it sounds like you have a good one.  Secondhand I wouldn't go above £35 personally, maybe I'm just tight ;)

New Haven got swallowed up by Penn Central in the late 60's I think, and I should imagine by 1970 most of the rolling stock would have been resprayed, but the RDC's were widely used and it would be simple enough to change yours if required.

I think CSX started around 1980 (ish) and I am pretty sure they got  up into the same areas where New Haven operated, so it wouldn't be outside the realms of possibility to have a CSX mainline and the RDC running on a preservation line nearby  ;)

Also have replied to your other thread

Well that may be a good start then - my idea was for the RDC to shuttle back and forth on a high level line above an urban shunting area.
I doubt whether I'll be wanting to change paint schemes or lettering etc. - I'd probably just sell and get something more appropriate.

My turn!  :smiley-laughing:

I only have  :NGAUGE: loco's.

Right, to start with, my English loco's:

:GraFar: (Poole made)

Flying Scotsman in LNER green. I have an N Brass replacement bogie earmarked for this and a repaint into BR Green.
J94 in Blue. A repaint, don't remember the original colour as its been repainted a few times now!
GP tank in BR black
2 x Holden tanks in GER blue awaiting repair... (Might be a long wait too!)
Class 08 in BR green
Class 47 'County of Norfolk' in NSE colours. (See, Tank hasn't got all of them!  :smiley-laughing:)
4P in Caledonian Railway in blue. An old 3 pole model but runs ok.

:GraFar: (China)

J94 in BR black
Class 08 in EWS red
94xx in GWR green
3MT in BR green

:Dapol:

14xx GWR green
14xx BR black
2 x M7 in LSWR green
Terrier 'Boxhill'

MINITRIX:

2 x Dock tanks. Both have been cosmetically altered to be more industrial looking.
2 x class 27 in green. One needs repair.
Warship in green
9F in black

UNION MILLS:

3F in BR black

PECO:

Jubilee in BR black. An early model. Desperately needs an overhaul!  :'(

And now for the locos that are or will be Irish once I've finished with them:

2 x Union Mills 3F's. One is planned for conversion to a J15, the other has been converted to a J19:

2 x Lifelike SW9 switcher chassis. I have 2 Valvedesign 'C' class diesel bodies for these and lots of fittings from N Brass to add.
Could be a while...

1 x  :Dapol: M7 with a  :GraFar: 6w tender chassis. I plan to chop this into a D16 4-4-0!  :)
1 x  :GraFar: GP tank to alter into either a J11 or J26. Gotta get plans to check 1st as to which.
1 x :Dapol: 14xx chassis that I've started to turn into a 2-4-2 to make one of those nice F6 class loco's.

And last but not least:

1 x old Poole made  :GraFar: class 37.
It needs a repair to one bogie and the bodywork is devoid of all fittings including bufferbeam!
I plan eventually to turn this beast into THE TURFBURNER!

A mixed bag if ever there was one...

Darn it! Rails sent me an e mail about limited stocks of the Farish 4MT 2-6-4 tank so I had to have one. Why do they do this to me? At this rate I'll have moved into the next number section way too soon. The max I can have on my (planned) layout is 14 and I already have 17 kettles which can then be substituted for fat fryers and I have 21 of them. Doh! Trouble is by the time the layout is built they'll be long out of warranty - just as well I have a test track.

shame no one does a nice kits of kettles and the gas axe men.
its not that i dislike kettles, i was just born too late to see any working in anger.
stuffed and mounted in museums or on hobbled on preserved lines just dont do it for me.
loved seeing woodhams scrapyard from the coach on a school trip to barry in the very early 80's.

my layout is an abridged version of gloucester central and horton road depot, i'd post some pictures but photopic went to the wall recently and the layout is still waiting for me to set it all up again after getting married 3 year ago and moving house.  damn these women and their decorating needs, i should have it all up again within the next month god willing.

I've only been at this since Easter this year.

Peco Collet.
108 DMU.
4 MT.
3 MT tank.

All chipped.

I also have a Hornby "Duchess of Atholl" three rail set still in it's slightly battered box that was a Christmas present in 1949 meaning I've had it for sixty two years...does this qualify for the longest owned loco?

There's also a tank engine, but neither have seen light of day for about thirty years at least.

1949 must have been a good year for "Duchess of Atholl" because thats the year my father gave me one as part of my 1st ever Hornby Doublo train set.
Wonder where that is how? Everything suddenly vanished back in the late 60s soon after(?) we had some alterations done in my parents house

All Grafar,  from the 80s or older, all run reasonably well.
#1. LMS 0-6-0 (Class 4F?) by Lima. pancake motor in tender  :P
#2. LMS 0-6-0, D&M white metal on Grafar 0-6-0 chassis.
#3. LNER Class J33??, D&M white metal on Grafar 0-6-0 chassis.
#4. GWR Pannier tank by Grafar
(http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac147/Jonathan_Clapp/fourGrafar060s.jpg)
not shown, one Black 5, somewhat modified, not running.
and one brand new Dapol Terrier "Ashtead"

For this thread, I had to do an inventory of my American stuff, which I have been accumulating since 1968,
the totals are diesel, electric and DMU - 84 , steam - 11
I also have three German steam engines,

so all together 103 engines. 8)

New entry and this time in the 150+ club.  I can't give you the break down but I have a handful of US diesels, over 25 BR Blue diesels and electrodiesels, somewhere over 100 BR Steam, about 10 MUs of various sorts (some need some work) and then some stuff "just because".  Recently purchased a pair of Australian Alco types - the 44 to go with the one I had as a kid (around somewhere) and the Gopher models 48 reviewed in the latest NGS Journal.  My wife knows about them - but possibly not how many...  She reckons if she ever leaves she is taking half the trains with her - the left half  :o
