I was emailed 2 weeks ago if i wanted mine yet due to my invoice number being next, i am not in a rush so said i would skip to pass on to the next with a priority. My invoice number is 35.

Sounds like they are up to speed in producing them now.

Hi @wobberly (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=643) ,

That's a shocking amount of time, especially if meantime they haven't communicated directly with customers. I've just browsed their site. I note the plan to take on an apprentice, and of course apologies for the delays. I can sympathize with them - if a cottage industry grows at a rate greater than expected or planned for, I can see how restoring equilibrium could be difficult. But I find it hard to excuse a lack of communication - how can one understand if one isn't informed etc.

I see they've bought a van and plan to deliver and install Nelevators themselves. Very laudable customer service aspirations there. I hope they've not forgotten the basics of customer service @wobberly (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=643) and have kept in touch with you - though your post suggests not.

I'd worry that they feel it necessary to install them, that should be a (very expensive) option!  :hmmm:

The question that crossed my mind was, how can they catch up with an order backlog if they are out on the road delivering/installing? :hmmm:

Agreed, seems a concern.

Yeah but when the things cost around a grand anyway, probably better to have it fitted by the manufacturer.

I must admit such a device would be ideal for when I finally permanently retire my layout from exhibitions, and it takes up it's final resting place in my train room.

Hello all,

I know Allen (the guy behind the Nelevator) pretty well and last time I went up to his place he had a small production line going.

I think demand has significantly exceeded his expectations, and so he is having to source far more parts than originally anticipated.

The van is very useful as it allows fully assembled Nelevators of all sizes to be delivered.

Cheers

Ben A.

I want to see the Nelevator go from strength to strength. They are an ingenious work of engineering art and if I could afford to, I'd have one mounted in a recess on the wall with a frame around it. 8)

And the backlog works in my favour, giving me more time to save up the pennies. :D

The last time I contacted them I got the impression that 6-9 months was the lead time on new orders.

I am still waiting for mine, but the guys have been in regular contact and kept me pretty much in the loop. As installation (by van or otherwise) is not an option for me, I am happy to wait until they solve a couple of design issues they have encountered.

So slow to deliver, but having seen a couple of more negative posts I wanted to provide a bit of balance about the customer service.

I too am quite happy to wait, as I would want the DCC incorporated control that he plans on adding and want them to figure out all the bugs with overseas shipping! I'm hoping to have the money for mine together next summer and to see it next winter or the following spring :)

Nelevation Newsletter - March 2017

Welcome to this newsletter and firstly may we apologise for not being able to attend Model Rail Scotland. It was a great shame as it is such a well organised and well attended event.

We can assure you however that we will be at Alexandra Palace (stand 85) this coming weekend for the London Festival of Railway Modelling and are looking forward to seeing some of you there.

N Gauge Build Progress
Our new apprentice Josh and a batch of N-gauge NelevatorsWith the help of Josh, our new assistant, we have been able to increase our production rate and have currently delivered 29 units, with a further six in the workshop ready to be delivered.

Where possible we are delivering in number order, but would be most grateful if you could drop us an e-mail to let us know your current layout status; particularly if you're in a position to take delivery and start using the Nelevator immediately.

We understand that you may be waiting for a Nelevator to build your layouts around. If this is the case, there is no need to wait to get your Nelevator. Please follow the mounting dimension guidelines on our website for the cut-out required in your baseboard, then when the time is right we will come and help you install it.

So far we have delivered units from the New Forest on the South Coast in the UK up to Cheshire, but are holding back delivering overseas for the moment until we are confident that early teething challenges have been completely resolved.

Manufacturing Challenges
We have had a few challenges with some of our first units, but are learning all the time; building up a knowledge-base of possible issues and correcting them before they happen. I have learnt from personal experience with my 6 foot version at home that the more time and care spent setting up the NelevatoNelevator Setup and Instructionsr, the better it performs.

To this end we have produced an installation and setup guide, which is available to view and download from our website, so please take a look.

Some of the technical challenges we have faced are:

Variability in Drive Belt Geometry: This was difficult to diagnose as it was hard to see what was going wrong, but on the occasional Nelevator when going one way the vertical alignment would slip by 12mm, but correct itself in the opposite direction. After careful examination the drive belt appeared to slowly climb over one pulley tooth in one direction and then climb back in the opposite direction. Measuring the belt thickness we noticed that it was 0.6mm (30%) thinner than a good belt. We now check all belts before assembly and have highlighted the problem to our supplier.

Worm Wheel Slippage: This has caused misalignment problems by allowing a slight motor movement before moving the drive shaft. Again this was caused by supplier manufacturing issues which have now been resolved.

Electronic Issue: We have had one electronic problem with the main control board resetting its home position. We haven't been able to replicate this fault in the lab, but suspect a mains electrical problem at the installation. We are working with the customer to resolve the issue by running the unit on a battery supply to isolate the mains. Once we find the cause we will know what to look for if this fault occurs again. We've changed power supplies and main circuit boards and the problem stays with the installation. Frustrating, but we'll get there; thanks for being so patient Douglas!

Additional Developments
We've also been working hard on some new developments which will be coming on line in the future:

Signal Light Control PCBTraffic Light Controlled Track Isolation: This is a great development that dramatically reduces the risk of a train entering the Nelevator when the Nelevator is moving. The system works by isolating the approach tracks if the Nelevator is moving, but also prevents it from moving if an optical beam is broken by the presence of a train. The traffic lights give a useful visible indication of the status of the Nelevator and isolated section. We're currently testing this on our demo layout and will be demonstrating it at the Alexandra Palace show.

Bluetooth Control via an Android Tablet: This allows wireless control of the Nelevator from up to 30ft away and has all the functionality of the standard handset.

DCC Control: We're still working with MERG to produce a system that will allow digital control of the Nelevator from their CBUS system, while also working on parallel DCC developments ourselves. We'll keep you updated of progress.

UK Delivery and Installation Costs
With our new van we are planning on delivering all Nelevators in the UK mainland ourselves at a delivery cost of £40.

As part of this delivery process we will also be offering an installation service at £50 per Nelevator (subject to the appropriate layout preparations being completed to accept the Nelevator).

Kit Build Nelevators
You may have noticed that that we have removed the option for kit build Nelevators from our website.

We have done this as we feel that we do not currently have time to support this option as we can foresee customers requiring a significant amount of assistance with the kit builds. We may bring this option back in the future, but for now all units will be delivered assembled. Any customers that need to assemble "on site" e.g. in a loft, then please let us know so that we can support your installation.

OO Production Units
We will be delivering the first four OO units in May and will of course be contacting customers in order number priority, but would like to get installations that are up and running so these first units get a good testing before opening up the remaining deliveries.

Forthcoming Show
The Nelevation show standIf you haven't seen the Nelevator and want to see it first hand, or would just like to catch up with us face-to-face, then you can see us at the following forthcoming show:

The London Festival of Railway Modelling: 25 - 26 March 2017, London: stand 85.

Thank you once again for your interest in the Nelevator and your continued patience if you're waiting for delivery.

We look forward to bringing you further updates soon and perhaps meeting you at Alexandra Palace.

Regards,
Allen Pearson

I'm a little worried about the shipping costs, I ordered a kit version as I'm overseas and shipping a fully assembled unit may be expensive.

I have had my Nellie delivered today and despite having no layout ready it was placed where I wanted it and tested with a short demo for me. A lovely piece of work and exceeds my expectations from when I first expressed an interest.

Great news. All you need now is the rest of the layout to stop the Nelevator becoming a very expensive display cabinet. ;)

Hi, may I ask what your order number was/is please so those of us waiting delivery can gauge where they are up to. Shame we have to do this but haven't had any response to emails, facebook or via their website.

Hi all,

I popped over to see Allen today to help him with some of the scenics on his new home layout "Chirk", which replaces his Ribblehead which was sadly destroyed when a tree fell on the building housing it during a storm.

Chirk depicts the rail viaduct and canal aqueduct spanning the Ceiriog valley.  The bridges are both 3D printed primarily.

Nearly all of the work is Allen's, I just did the River Ceiriog in this scene.

The water towards the front looks reasonable, but a little more work is still needed toward the back of the visible area.  I'll probably try to visit Allen again over the Xmas period to get this sorted.

We were chatting about the Nelevators and he is now getting through the N-gauge deliveries at a reasonable rate, though there is a fair amount of work in each one and demand has significantly exceeded his expectations I think!

Apologies for the slightly tangential post!

Cheers

Ben A.

I was in two minds about that. It did comes across as having an axe to grind, but it was certainly interesting, and no reason to believe it could be untrue.

Well, the post that was removed was from a 'member' who had only just joined, and it was their first post.

I would rather have seen some dialogue with the poster rather than just a deletion. Who's to say that the information given in the post wasn't accurate? Just because it seemed like an axe grinding mission, doesn't mean it wasn't true.

Shame.

Hello all,

Full disclosure:  I know Allen (the man behind the Nelevators) well as we live near each other and are both model train guys.  He has been hugely helpful to Revolution, allowing us to store four pallet loads of Pendolinos when they arrived in a corner of his unit and he has been nothing other than generous, supportive and helpful.

I also know something of the background to what has happened here.

I accept I may have some bias, but this is my assessment:

Allen has a workshop at his place of business dedicated to the production of Nelevators, and I have seen store rooms full of parts waiting to be assembled.  Two Nelevators were delivered and installed this last week.

He has always said that demand for the Nelevators exceeded his expectations, and that managing assembly, supply and fitting of them has taken him longer, and been far more involved, than anticipated.

Whatever the issues are between him and a former employee that is their business, and it does neither any favours to wash dirty linen on a public forum.

Unfortunately Allen is on holiday (it seems an unfortunate coincidence that the post was made on the same day he left the country) so has no avenue of reply.

The contentious post was removed because it was in breach of forum rules and was also, in my view, potentially actionable.

In the event of proceedings being started the forum could be as culpable as the poster if it could not show that it acted promptly.  This is why we have moderators and forum rules, and why the post was taken down quickly.

EDIT:  I should probably add that I am waiting for a Nelevator for our new club layout, and have 100% confidence that a fine product will be delivered.  We are lucky, I suppose, that we don't actually need it just yet as the baseboards are still under construction!

cheers

Ben A.

Allen delivered my Nellie about a year ago, I think.  It had some problems, partly manufacturing issues, partly because I didn't set it up properly. Allen helped out with spare parts and replacements free of charge. It does still have one issue which has not been resolved despite a visit by Allen, one side makes quite graunchy noises when moving upwards, but it does function correctly.

All in all I am happy with it, though it has to be said that Allen isn't always as good at responding to emails as he could be!

I know some people have had some problems and Allen has taken at least one back and refunded in full.

Has anyone heard anything further from Nelevation at all? I emailed on 20th July asking where I was in the queue for production/delivery but have had no reply.

I'm aware of Ben advising us that the proprietor was on holiday, but that is now almost a month since I emailed.

Further to my post above, I phoned again on Thursday and spoke to (who I assume was) Allen. We have agreed a delivery & installation of around October/November for my Nelevator. I think he was going to try and hit a number of Scottish customers in one trip.

Nelevation Newsletter - September 2018

It's been ten months since our last Newsletter. Terribly sorry for that; it's proving somewhat difficult to maintain my day job whilst also manufacturing and delivering Nelevators.

Delivery Status
However, we have delivered nearly 100 units now, mostly N Gauge, but with the first batch of OO units finally being shipped as well.

All of the revised OO tooling has now been completed, with the new stacker ends arriving two weeks ago, so we are starting to get through the back-log of outstanding orders slowly but surely.

Manufacturing Update
It's been an incredibly frustrating year for us with the manufacturing of Nelevators.

We employed an apprentice engineer who helped us ramp-up manufacturing and deliveries, only to decide that Nelevation wasn't for him and to take a different career path.

Good luck Josh, we hope it's going well for you.

We then employed another young man, and for different reasons that didn't work out, so here I am by myself assembling Nelevators for now with the part time help from my son Jack, who many of you will have met at the various shows we've attended.

Unfortunately for me, Jack creamed his A-levels and is off to University in September. Well done Jack! He will be studying 3D model design and effects, so we hope to see some fantastic model railways coming in the near future.

Going Forward
We are totally committed to Nelevation and are encouraged by all of the positive feedback we have received.

Moving forward we want to be completely focused on delivering current orders and supporting our customers. For that reason we have decided to take no further orders until we are up to date. We will continue to register interest and will re-open orders once all outstanding deliveries are completed.

To that end we have also decided to stop all sales advertising and won't be attending any shows this coming season. This will allow us to put all revenue and resources into building and delivering Nelevators.

We have made great steps forward in the Nelevator workshop to improve production and transportation.

We now build units in wooden frames with castors on, which allow us to easily move units around the workshop and wheel them straight into the van for delivery. This has made a huge difference, especially with the OO units which are so heavy due to the increased counter balance weights.

DCC / Traffic Lights
Richard has done a great job in developing the new DCC module and Traffic Light control system, both of which are now fully developed and ready for production.

We have one system on our demo layout, and I have also been giving the Traffic Lights a thorough testing on my home layout.

Customer Review
We recently gave a DCC module to a customer who works with a fully automated, timetabled layout. He has kindly given the module a very positive review:

First things first - I'm very impressed with the DCC unit. Really, really good!

Instructions;
Nice and clear, easy to follow and accurate. I was up and running DCC in less than 10 mins - so the plug and play nature of the whole setup is a real strength.
The only comment I could think of to share (and it's very minor): Instructions refer a number of times to the 'NellyCOM' port, however on this Nelevetor itself this is actually labelled 'COMs' (or perhaps that is just my unit?). I knew what you were referring to so was no issue for me, but I thought I'd mention in case it created confusion for anyone else.
Initial setup;
Worked first time. No issues whatsoever.
Jumper change for polarity response - great (just what I needed).
Address learning configuration - perfect, and a great addition (and miles easier than manual programming).
Usage;
So far it has performed flawlessly. No issues with reliability, no lost messages.
I have interacted with it 'directly' (as in via Digitrax DT402 controller with DCS100 command station), but I'm mainly using it in a full automation setup.
Windows 10 PC running TrainController Gold -> RR CirKits LocoBuffer-USB connection -> RR CirKits SSB Gateway (allows me to link in a Simple Serial Bus (SSB) for block detection using RR CirKits WatchMan's) -> then LocoNet connection to my DCS100.
I have been running the Nelevator without issue from the control panel on my PC. The image right shows how I have modelled the Nelevator in the software - essentially as a ladder of turnouts, with each turnout assigned an address corresponding the the appropriate Nelevator location.
By playing with some logic rules (see example) I even managed to setup the software so that on train approach, if the current Nelly position is occupied, it will direct the incoming train to the next nearest empty slot. And it will give bias towards the central position (when open slots are the same distance above and below) - in order to place most trains towards the middle. The whole objective here being to optimise the stacking and minimise transition times...
I use block detection (WatchMan) to monitor when a train is entering the Nelly, and the software is calibrated with train lengths and track lengths to calculate stopping distances as accurately as possible. I'm VERY interested in the Traffic Lights development you have underway though (October 2017 Newsletter) as that will eliminate ALL the risk of my software-based stopping points! Please do keep me in mind if you need another guinea pig for that one :-)
So the whole experience has been overwhelmingly positive - and I certainly think this is a product you can stand behind with confidence. This is a great product, Richard - well done!

Thanks again Andrew for giving the module a thorough test. We have taken on board your comments about the addition of track position feedback for future reference.

We will be offering three packages for the DCC and Traffic Light systems.

Package 1 - DCC module only:
DCC module: This can be mounted out of sight (within two metres of the Nelevator). This board will allow full DCC control of the Nelevator, but cannot be upgraded to add the Traffic Light system at a later date (see package 2).
Package 2 - DCC and Track Relay Power Control:
(upgradeable to add Traffic Lights later)
Combined DCC / Traffic Light control motherboard: This can be mounted out of sight (within two metres of the Nelevator). The motherboard comes populated with the Traffic Light interface ready to upgrade if required, but also contains eight relay contact pairs that are controlled by the Nelevator to interrupt track power and prevent potential collisions.
Package 3 - DCC + Traffic Lights:
Combined DCC / Traffic Light control motherboard.
2 x Traffic Light boards: Housed in custom black plastic mouldings that clip into the Nelevator portals.

2 x Interconnect Cables: To connect the Traffic Light boards to the Traffic Light control motherboard.
NOTE: You don't have to use the DCC function to take advantage of the Traffic Light functions.

Full specifications can be found on our website.

Before committing to manufacture these new products, we would like to gauge demand from you. If you are interested in any of these products, please could you email us to register an interest.

Approximate costs of the systems will be:
Package 1: DCC module - £60
Package 2: DCC & track power control (upgradeable) -  £150
Package 3: DCC and Traffic Lights - £250

Peco Products
Due to the large amount of track that we buy from Peco for the Nelevators, we are now an official re-seller of Peco products.

We always carry stock of Code 55 N Gauge wooden sleeper and Code 75 OO Gauge wooden sleeper flexible track, but can get any Peco products you may require.

Please drop us an email if you need any Peco products.

Well, that's all our news for now. Thank you once again for all of your continuing support.

I got mine in mid July.  As I'd moved since I ordered I'd dropped them an email to let them know, and, having now got a far bigger space for the railway than before, I asked if I could upgrade from a medium to a large.  No problem, and within a couple of weeks it had arrived.  I'll give Allen full marks for dedication.  He drove to Dorset early, arriving before 7:30 am and was back on the road again by 8:00.  All worked fine, no issues to report (fingers crossed!).

Further to my post above, I phoned again on Thursday and spoke to (who I assume was) Allen. We have agreed a delivery & installation of around October/November for my Nelevator. I think he was going to try and hit a number of Scottish customers in one trip.

Scott

Further to my post last year (above) has anyone had their Nelevator delivered?

For my order, October and November both came and went. I called at the end of November and was told December.  It's now March and I am now seriously considering cancelling and obtaining a refund, despite the fact that that approach will lead me to largely redesign the layout and the railway room. I feel like I am just being told what I want to hear whenever I call.

I emailed last week asking for a realistic delivery schedule but am yet to have a reply.

I must admit I have become totally disillusioned with Nelevation.

Best

I'm just wondering is anyone has received their nelevator in the last year?

I live in the USA and ordered mine in Jan 2016, nearly 4 years ago. Whenever I've called it's just been a few weeks away from shipping. Needless to say, I'm still waiting.

Anyhow, I've just sent an email cancelling my order. Partly because I've moved house, so my layout plans have changed, however if I thought I would ever see it I'd still like one. I just don't think I'll ever see it. A shame because it's an excellent concept.

At this point I'll just be happy to get my 50% deposit back.

Cheers,

John

I just checked the date of my order, it was November 2015!!! I haven't heard anything from them in a couple of years, so I may do similar and cancel as there are other ways I can expand my fiddle yard.

Have those that have cancelled received their money back ok?

I wasn't asked to pay anything until just before delivery, which was in July last year.  I didn't pay a deposit when I put in the original order.

Had mine for 2 or 3 years now, still working great. I hope the endeavour succeeds, as I  would like a source of spare parts, which no doubt it will eventually need. Could do more to keep their customers informed though.

I sent an email via the web page a while ago and haven't had a response... I paid out £359 deposit in 2016 and I'm not sure if I'm going to see that back or ever see my nelevator... I even spoke to them in person at the stand at an exhibition and they never got back to me.

I am glad I didn't go ahead and order mine, after they failed to respond to some basic questions.

Has anyone had one delivered this year?

Hi Folks,

Have tried to contact the team at Nelevation a few times over the past 6 month.
But no replies to E-mails . . .  understand the guys are having issues keeping up with orders but is this normal ?

I actually attempted to buy a used Nelevator, alas it got pretty severely damaged during transit.
If someone is interested in a nelevator for spares or repairs then please get in touch by pm and I can put you in touch with the owner.

P.S if anyone is thinking of selling their Nelevator I would be interested in buying.

I too would like to contact nelevation about my order. I am most concerned that we have not heard from them since September 2018, 18 months ago. If they can no longer supply, then my layout design will have to be radically altered.

Just my two'penneth and no personal interest in one of these units but waiting well over 4 years for supply is a little excessive to say the least....!
I know that a lot of things can cause manufacturing and transportation issues for everyone in business (particularly with COVID-19 at this present time) but i know this...if I had ordered one, paid and was still waiting months down the line ( no pun intended) after numerous phone calls and emails, I think I would be paying them a visit in person and having a 'quiet' chat...!
There must be at least one of their (very patient) customers who lives near to Broughton/Huntingdon who could at least do a drive-by to see if anything is out of sorts, otherwise I would be tempted to involve Trading Standards as I would consider the proprietors definitely 'out of order'...!
Again, just my two'penneth...!

Has the venture folded? Has there been any kind of announcement in the model railway press?

I do like the concept of the Nelevator, though I never ordered one.    With all the investment in design undertaken to create them, would/could another firm consider taking up manufacture?

No personal interest, other than admiring the thing; Companies House still thinks that Nelevation Limited is a going concern.

Nelevation is still alive and well. I recently heard from a member about getting in touch with them, he did and received a Nelevator shortly afterwards.

Not N but check out the elevator at the start of this vid :D   It behaves more like a rotisserie with layers moving across the top and bottom too!

That's a proper paternoster lift, which is what I originally thought the Nelevator was going to be.  Until a year ago I was still hoping that the Nelevator would be a viable solution for my attic layout, but I'm now assuming that it's dead in the water as a product?

I think the way the Nevelator works is better than a Paternoster though - it enables you to have one 'stack' facing each way.

It would be a braver man than I who gave them any money right now, even if not definitively dead.

Thanks for the updates everyone. Given that it's a slightly complicated bit of kit you'd want to know that there was backup in the form of spares/servicing/help desk etc. So, even if they are still going in a residual way, the fact that they don't respond to communications would make me wary of buying one new or used.

Ah well, back to the helix & stacked baseboards idea.

I looked at this for my 6' one, it needs a custom made wooden crate to keep it safe for transportation. If you were driving the van then not much more, it you were using a courier then you would need to pack between each elevator level and soft packaging all around the outside then the wooden case.

I started planning to build one for someone who was interested in buying mine at one point and am a woodworker so not that hard.

Mine arrived laid flat on the floor of the van. It isn't far from Huntingdon to Bedford but this was the last delivery of a round trip.

Nothing on FaceAche or Twatter since 2018. They are still 'trading' as their company accounts are made up to date at Companies House.

Absolutely. Such a shame. Mystified why they didn't work through the issues and upscale production.
