Live steam in N was done decades ago as I recall.  This guy even made live steam for Z :)

I remember the guy doing live steam years ago - blew my mind at the time!

I enjoyed the new video, but given he said it worked at about 4200 rpm I think that might just be a tiny bit too fast for N steam locos!

I think he actually said 14000 RPM, but then again that's a 5mm engine running off high pressure air. Assuming there'd be enough grunt from a much smaller pressure source (such as a micro boiler) to make it run, I'd guess it would be a much lower RPM too.

I recall a 009 exhibition in Greenwich back in the 70's. There was a layout there with 009 live steam. Whilst they only went around and around they did so at quite realistic speeds.

This is a more recent video but says some of the locos are over 20 years old. Definitely NOT the smallest live steam loco of course.
