Title: What Camera Do You Use?
Post by: Tank on April 04, 2011, 09:14:59 AM
It's not a question of who has the best camera, but an interest in knowing what cameras we all use.  :camera:  I know there are a few of us with super duper DSLR's....but not everyone feels the need to have one.  So what have you got? ???

Many, many years ago I started off with an Olympus OM10 with a manual adapter, I had 4 or 5 lenses (inc a 500mm mirror), flash guns, light meters, various tripods, extension rings and filters, my bag weighed a ton  :(

I used to do my own B&W developing and printing and did a few commission pieces, glamour stuff, sports, still life.  My battle was always trying to get the lighting effects I wanted, but the best part of it for me was in the darkroom, dodging & burning, that is where my work came alive, such a wonderfully tactile experience.

Following years of back problems though all that stuff had to go, I have recently bought a little 12Mp Samsung with lots of good manual functions on it, it's smaller than a packet of cigarettes, and the macro is really terrific, I used it for the through the window & room shots in the Sawanoya Ryokan thread.

I'm currentlt using a Canon EOS 500 but I'm thinking of chopping it in for the something with a higher resolution. I do a lot of wildlife photography and need a hefty zoom and very clear focus as a lot of the subjects can only be photographed from a fair distance or they will run away and hide again !

I use my iPhone 4 camera for quick snaps and a Sanyo Xacti 8MP HD Video camera for better shots (it's a dual video/photo camera). The Xacti's great, especially for video. I need to practice with lighting and using a tripod more for stills shots though as I don't have particularly still hands.

Oh, and I fired an SLR back in about 1983 when I was in the ATC.

It was AD and no time machines were involved. I think the Bullpup only started coming to Army units just after that.

Sorry about the long quote, but O Boy can I identify with this! I still have a couple of first-rate Canon SLRs, with beautiful FD lenses, not to mention a whole heap of darkroom gear - all basically useless now . . . so I've "upgraded" to an EOS 400D. Almost as good, and the savings on film, processing, and chemicals are phenomenal!

I went from a bassic(?) Brownie box camera of the 1950s, through the 35mm snappers, up to 35 mm SLR on my 21st birthday and the required suitcase of spare lenses/trypods/flashes etc. untill I could carry no more so dropped right down to 110 pocket camera in about 1976.
In the end I moved up through the point and shot digi`s till a couple of years ago when I bought a Fujifilm Finepix S1000.
I think that will have to see me throught till wooden box time with its simple options and  point and shoot facilities.

I agree with you to a certain point Michael, and in this modern day of technology there is so much more you can do with a photo, however, sometimes, just sometimes there is something about a hand produced print  ;D

Just got a Panasonic Lumix something or other a few weeks back, just a compact digi. I'm not fully au fait with it yet, but it seems to do everything I ask - just some depth of focus issues on close-ups (which is important to us N-gaugers).

Does that mean I've thrown the old one away? Or the one(s) before that? Hell, no: the top left hand drawer is becoming a camera graveyard complete with associated chargers, USB cables, memory cards, etc. (heaven forbid any two of them would use the same accessories!).

I have several camera - The two most useful are the Canon DSLR - though it is only a 350d it serves my purpose well.  I have several lenses including 170-500mm zoom and a 600mm mirror! - one of my other hobbies is birding/birdwatching hence the necessity for more reach.

Another more handy camera is the Panasonic FZ18 - it has 18x optical zoom and compared to DSLR kit is light as a feather.  A great trade off of weight v quality.  Of course it is no DSLR but does not induce a hernia :beers:

Both of these are a bit long in the tooth now and superceded by better models.  They both work very well however.  Not changing either just yet.

I use a Kodak Brownie Flash II.  :D

Not really!  :smiley-laughing:  But I do have one.
Along with a Kodak Junior II and a Zorki 4.
They were all my Dads at some point and now make a nice display.

I actually use a GE E1055W. 10.1MP, 5x Zoom on a 28mm wide angle lens.
Does what I need and fits in my pocket.
Also still have my Fujifilm Finepix 6900zoom that I have used since 2002!

I've got a couple of Nikon DSLRs; a D50 and a D7000 with a few lenses - one of the best for photing N gauge models is a Sigma 50 macro prime lens. The D7000 is a semi-pro jobbie and built like a battleship. I've also got a Canon Ixus but to be quite honest as it's aged it's got terrible; the reliability and quality has become really bad - I'd never buy another Canon but I must get another digital pocket snap gun.

Had Photography as a hobby and profession for 54 years, did the darkroom thing, used most formats of cameras my favourite being medium format and my trusty old Rolliflex 2.8 Twin Lens Reflex.

After lugging a case of SLR equipment around as a wedding photographer for 25 years I decided to keep it simple and light, after I retired 6 years ago I went for the small stuff and continued on with it, I now have a Kodak C875, Fuji E550 and Canon A620 plus o little Kodak Zx1 Video job for movies, between them they do what I want and have no intention of lugging the big stuff around again, ever.

Its not the camera type of that you use that counts, but knowing how to get the best of it helps a whole lot.

I use a Sony Alpha A350 - although most of my photos on here are taken with my iPhone.  My Alpha is usually set up with the standard 18-55mm lens.  I also have a 75-300mm, 500mm mirrored, a 2x Teleconvertor and a 50mm dedicated Macro.  I also have a High Definition camcorder (Sony!) which takes 12mp stills. :camera:

I just got my 7DayShop.com LED lights (as recommended by Tank) and they're certainly bright for simple battery powered lamps. (I say lamp, it's actually a 64 LED array).
Just experimenting with them at the moment but definitely going to have to buy a few packs of rechargeables as these gadgets take 4 AA batteries each.

I'll be 65 years old in November and my wife wants to give a better than usual present.

So, I dug out my "bucket list" and one of the items on it was a Leica camera.

I had a look on the internet and it seems that the entry-level Leica camera is the D-Lux 7.

It looks very nice but can anyone tell me whether it is a good buy ?

Thanks in advance.

I've been a Minolta user since the1980s, Currently a DSLR 5D and a compact A200, I did have a couple of Sony DSLRs which take the same lenses as the Minolta but went back to the 5D. I do have too many lenses, mostly a Tamron 18-250 zoom is fitted but I also have 4 zooms covering 11-16, 17-50, 28-75 & 80-200 at f2.8, also a  50 1.8,  90 f2.8 macro, 500 f8 mirror  2x teleconvertor, and my most recent acquisition a Tamron 150-600. Add to this a JVC video  cam.
But I'm still using a 20 year old photo editing software!

The eternal question  :D

In terms of features they aren't always anything special but a lot of photographers drool over them and I'd been told it was the lens/body build quality and longevity you're paying for. How much of it is just branding and aesthetics is hard to say particularly on lower-end models which might actually come off the same production line as other cameras.
For instance the model you are looking at appears almost identical in terms of features to a Panasonic Lumix DC-LX100 II that is cheaper.

Probably the only way you'd know for sure is to hold one and compare it to the competition in person.

The D-Lux 7 is indeed manufactured by Panasonic.
I have the simple Panasonic interchangeable lens version (no viewfinder) and it is a very nice camera.
If you want to use it to photograph your n gauge models test the macro function before you buy it.
I read a review which says macro focusing is only possible in the wide angle setting but I always prefer to zoom in a bit (or a lot).

I started with a Brownie, moved on to a secondhand Zeiss Ikon Contina and got my first SLR secondhand in my thirties - like @Lawrence (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=16), an OM10 with manual adapter. I got quite good with it and above all it did what I wanted. I also have an OM 40, but its battery went flat too quickly.

When digital cameras arrived on the scene, I used to take the company camera home with me - it never did what I wanted. With retirement looming, I bought myself a Olympus Pen E-PL3 kit with two zoom lens. This is an mFT camera, as are the digital OM cameras and I believe some Panasonic Lumix cameras, and the lens are interchangeable. The real reason I bought it though, was that with the appropriate adapter I could reuse my old OM lenses. Unfortunately in all the years I've had the camera, the adapter has never been in stock at any shop I visited.

Still, at least the camera occasionally does what I want!

Peter,

My Panasonic is also a mFT camera.
There are many OM to mFT adapters on the market, I found a nice one on Amazon.de:
https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Urth-Lens-Adapter-Compatible-Olympus/dp/B088C2VY66 (https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Urth-Lens-Adapter-Compatible-Olympus/dp/B088C2VY66)

It will work exactly the same as the original Olympus adapter

Back in the days I worked afternoon shifts at a full service petrol station (after my day job) to earn enough to buy my Nikkormat FT2, and a Metz flash, and other lenses, but I mainly use the phone or a little Nikon digital these days. I also have an Olympus Pen FV (half frame 35mm SLR) with a couple of lenses that I get out occasionally and exercise the shutter and diaphrams. It's a lovely little instrument.

I have a Canon 700D and an assortment of lenses, but since I got my Samsung S20 ultra phone it has stayed on the shelf getting dusty, the phone takes excellent pictures and videos and is so much smaller and lighter.
