ICI / Barrier wagons

Hi All

just about to start work on a couple of PXA barrier wagons that were used on ICI acid wagons at the front and rear of
the train. I am trying to work out what will be the best chassis to use. They were built by Standard Railway Wagon Co
in to lot`s one lot had no ends and the other lot had high ends on them. I know that the N gauge Society are doing the
ferry van that was also used, but I would like to have choice as to which barrier wagons that I can use when I run my
wagons.

I don't model British N so not really familiar with the stock, but looking at Paul Bartlett's photo of a PXA barrier wagon I'd probably use the chassis from something like the Farish OCA and scratch build the "walls".  It's not exactly the same underframe but the length looks about right?

Just seen this thread but ironically in the "Vehicles" section !
Like you, I have been looking at doing these wagons, especially since I managed to get plans of the HCN tankers themselves including a diagram showing the mass of markings on them !
I managed to get the BR diagram for these barrier wagons and they are the same overall length and wheelbase as the OCA wagons - HOWEVER, the solebars are straight along the bottom and do not have the "recesses" at the wheels.
A better donor wagon, in my opinion, would be the SPA wagon, which was also produced by Farish and still occasionally available S/H.

I assume you mean the PXA used on the Hydro Cyanic Acid (HCA) tanks?

They were 6325mm wheelbase, 11248 over buffers.

Pages 185 and 186 (diagrams PX016A and PX016B).

They share the same wheelbase as the 1970s Speedlink wagons - VAA, VBA, VCA, VDA, OAA, OBA, OCA, SPA etc.

None of the existing Farish models are an exact match for the solebar construction - the triangular sections on the solebar are very characteristic of the PXA and don't exist on any of the Farish models. I'd probably start with the chassis of the SPA.

Agreed - the chassis is not an exact match but it is a good starting point !
Next project will be how to convert a Farish tank wagon to make the TUA itself ......

Hi there,

According to David Tandy's book on the history of Standard Wagon they were built in 1980.  The first six had the lower fla deck, the latter 12 had the raised superstructure.  They were loaded with boxed sand to act as ballast.
