Hi

After reading the Lyddle End topic, I wondered if anyone knew the history of the SD Mouldings range of buildings?

I have several plaster hollow-casting buildings. I occasionally see them on eBay, some painted and some plain.

They are similar in size to Lyddle End, and my ones are typically stone buildings (with different colours for different regions).

It would be great to know the back story on these and if anyone has a definitive guide to the full range.

Thanks

Bealman

Very quick links, Chris, but they don't address the OP.

bob tidbury knows the answer and has a few

Hopefully he will be able to shed light. They  possibly were part of the SD Models range produced 25 30 years ago

I can't help with the history but did see 'Marsh Chipping' at the Preston show in 2020. Here's a clip where all the buildings against the backscene are SD Mouldings. I regret not getting any when thy were available but knew nothing of them at that point

Sorry I know Ray used to go up north to collect S D Mouldings from the guy who made them but  I am sorry I cant remember the guys name or where he lived ,I remember Ray saying if ever I went with him to collect a batch NOT TO ACCEPT a drink of coffee because every thing was covered in dust and be prepared to be slobbered on because there was a huge dog ,I  never did go up with Ray and I am  sorry I cant help with the History and of course Ray has passed away so I cant ask him I dont know if his son Andrew might know but I doubt it as the models havnt been available for years .

My goodness, SD Mouldings. I thiink I have one and couldn't remember who made it.
They certainly look the part.

It is quite sad how many lone producers pass and leave the fraternity poorer for their absence or lack of a successor.

From searching the web, particularly eBay listings, I think the building was produced by SD Mouldings of Rochdale, Lancashire. They were sold on eBay by scalebuildings4all, which is now out of business.
According to listings, Ray's range of SD Mouldings Buildings and Civil Engineering are all based on actual structures.
I think the OO scale moulds were sold to Kevin, behind Scalebuildings4all, who sold home cast and painted buildings originally marketed by SD Mouldings.

Based on my research, I think the list below lists the buildings made. As you can see from the end column, I own numerous (32!) of these. I've found some that I cannot match to a catalogue number.

B H E Used to sell them on the stand and we used to have a corner with several on display ,People used to pick them up to lookst them and were never very careful putting them back ,lots of them were chipped and chimneys broken because they were made of plaster ,At the end of some shows some were so damaged that they couldnt be sold so I bought them from Ray at trade price and have made a complete village and a farm from them .
I used to put foliage on the damaged bits or hide the damage with a tree ,also they were improved by putting chimney pots on .
Ray stopped selling them when a man fell down some steps going on to a stage nocking the big board over and smashing most of the buildings on display ,the man didnt even say sorry but just hurried of into the crowd it happened so fast we didnt  even  get much of a description ,Ray said thats it its not worth stocking them any more too many are getting damaged plus they were quite heavy a box with them in had to  go on the bottom in the car .
I still cant put pictures of my village on here but for those interested I will[ut the picture on the Facebook page .
As soon as I read the post above ROCHDALE came back in my memory but I still cant remember the guys name .

They look most effective and even better in the flesh (so to speak), when Bob kindly invited me to see "Stonehouse".

Yeah, when I was member of a club during the nineties, they were a big deal and certainly did the job. Shame they're kaput now.
