Hi I'm thinking of buying the class 47 in br blue large logo. I'm thinking of running it with mk1's. I'm also looking at the 37 and 50 in large logo for pulling the coaches.

Did they actually run pulling mk1's or is this totally out of era.

As before I really just run what I like but still want it to "look right"
Thanks in advance

I normally associate the large logo era with Mk2s, but as the Mk1s and large logo locos shared the network for so long, it is IMPOSSIBLE that they wouldn't have worked together fairly often.

Examples might include:
Paddington-Oxford/Newbury , 47/50s + Mk1s (also Mk2s)
Waterloo-Exeter, 50s + Mk1 (also Mk2s)?
Many Mk1s lasted right into NSE days on both of the above.

47s, 37s and 50s in large logo blue are fine with Mk 1 stock.  Here's one for example:

Whilst Mk 2 stock was probably more common, you couldn't really say Mk 1s were rare.

Class 37 and 47 locos operated around Scotland and the North East with vacuum braked Mark 1 and Mark 2 coaches, in BR Blue, Large Logo Blue and InterCity

I assume you are referring to 47535 in Large Logo Blue
Just be aware this model has both ends crash repaired, so cannot easily be renumbered to another model

Hi thanks for the replies, what do you mean crash end repairs on this model. On the pictures I saw on hattons I noticed the 47 had an extra light etc so just thought it had received mods during its life.
Thanks bart

There are no extra lights on 47535, the loco simply had marker lights and a sealed beam headlight (the same as the other Class 47 that Farish offer; 47474 and 47612)

When a Class 47 was crash repaired it was typically given a flush / flat end
Compare another Class 47 and you will see the original headcode panel, on later locos this was plated over

Equally, some locos have only one end crash repaired, but as yet Farish have not modelled any of these

Another such Class 47 with both ends crash repaired is 47614

Thanks for that, I did have the 47 br blue with domino head ode but its now living much needed on another layout

Another feature with 47s was that some had very pale, silver/grey /white(?) roofs. This marked them out as being Stratford allocated engines. (I suspect 47 535 is one of these?).
Whether this tradition lasted right through the large logo era, or whether they ever got repainted on allocation elsewhere, I'm not sure.
All the same, they may not be ideal if you're planning a (say) Scottish theme.

Thanks guys, I really liked the paint scheme with the full yellow cab ends black bonnet and thought I could use these to pull passenger trains as " in my world" they painted the fronts full yellow to give people more warning as they travelled faster then freight trains.
Sounds all good in my head anyway, and I thought I could get the 47 and the forthcoming 37 and 50 which I thought would make good passenger haulers
Cheers bart

The standard roof colour was grey (works repaint after overhaul)
Stratford occasionally repainted them silver

Some Scottish locos were repainted by their home depot (Eastfield or Inverness)
This was a very simple repaint of the ends and/or sides, the roof simply being cleaned and left in blue, these can typically be recognised by the smaller large logo numbers or even the original size numbers
However later this practice was banned and locos were repainted by Glasgow Works but some of these were outshopped with special requests from their home depots!
