Title: Who bought all the lacquer?
Post by: Jim Easterbrook on July 29, 2020, 06:17:43 AM
Based on recommendations here I decided to get some Halfords satin lacquer to finish off my models. Every time I look on Halfords' web site it tells me "Unfortunately this product is not available in your local store or the 5 closest stores. Please try changing your location."

Do I have to move house?  :)

Yeah, sorry about that, lacquer is only available to those of us who live in North Oxfordshire.

Seriously though, no idea. I suspect it's a case of more people doing 'jobs' at home, combined with supply chain disruption caused by C19.

Do you have a branch of 'The Range' close to you ?
They do a good selection of spray paints - Hycote brand I think which I've had good results with and reasonably priced.

Hobbycraft might also be worth a look.

Thanks. "The Range" don't appear to have a Hycote satin lacquer - just matt & gloss. I couldn't find any satin on the Hobbycraft web site either.

I'm happy to wait for Halfords to get some back in stock, or go to a further away branch. Still closer than Hobbycraft or The Range though. Waiting gives me time to do the preparatory steps properly instead of rushing things.

That would be my supposition, too. Especially when you see the increased output from some of our forum members - ahem :D (no names mentioned to protect the guilty)

@Jim Easterbrook (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=8509)

I live in Morden, which isn't a millions miles away from you, and according to Halford's website, it is available in the New Malden store (Shannon Corner, next to the A3), which is also quite close. Click and collect.

Is this the same stuff?

Interested to know what you need it for - finish on locos?

They've restocked today! [Edit: No they haven't - it says they will have it on 4th August.] New Malden is one of the stores I use. I went to the Epsom branch this morning to get some gloss lacquer - they've also got the satin now [not now, 4th August], but not this morning.

That's the stuff. I'm bodging / adapting / building some wagons and swap-body containers and want a non-gloss finishing coat.

We have lacquer in Melton Mowbray, but only Matt IIRC. Was in on Tuesday to get some primer :)

Depending on your decals you may want to proceed with caution; I always used to use it, but having changed to laser printed decal paper the Halfords lacquer destroyed the decals (and thus the wagon's finish as it did a great job of sealing the decals too ). Changed to Crystal Clear instead. Expensive, and it stinks, but seems to work nicely on virtually all finishes.

I've used my newly acquired Halfords gloss to seal my inkjet printed decals. If Halfords satin is incompatible with Halfords gloss then I will have words with Halfords' lawyer. :)

Should be fine then. I used to use both with inkjet decals and it was fine, obviously something about the laser toner.

Thanks

According to the can (of gloss): "The advanced acrylic based formulation of Halfords Clear Lacquer is compatible with virtually all types of automotive paint finishes, including cellulose."

Life's complicated enough without the UK and USA using different names for everything. I was amused to read of a case where someone had done a simple search and replace to anglicise an American document. The word "particitrousers" showed the failings of such an approach.

I saw something similar where they'd done a find and replace of "ass", I quite liked the idea of people making "arseumptions".

Lacquer derives form a resin made from insect shells that is a paint producing a hard glossy surface.  It is used to describe various materials as well exhibiting the same characteristics including Acrylic materials in solvents.
