Old Piko - What to look for when buying
« on: April 24, 2011, 03:24:34 pm »
Skoda CHS4.
The usual problem with these is that the plastic motor mounts are usually broken. So if you see in an Ebay description that the loco moves but is jerky then this is probably the cause of the problem. I haven't come up with a way to fix it yet. The square pieces of metal that you can see on each end of the chassis are selenium directional lighting fittings. There is a switch at the side of the chassis directly below the motor for changing between rail and overhead operation.
For DCC conversion it might be an idea to turn the motor the other way round and solder wires from the contact strips to the motor. There should be room to fit a decoder on top of the motor. There is a strange coil in the lighting curcuit for which the purpose is unclear.

Nohab M61.
Watch out for this strange melted part behind the cab. The first one I bought had this. The seller thought that it may have been caused by a soldering iron, but as I have seen another with exactly the same problem it may be a generic problem with this model. Be sure to ask for photos showing both sides.

Coaches.
The wheels are of the 'pizza cutter' type and could bump along on the sleepers of modern track. The can be replaced with finer scale wheels available on Ebay from sellers such as benn002-2, or you could search for Piko n Radsätze.
You can also find lighting kits for these coaches, but I have found them a little tricky to install and they tend to flicker badly.

All these old models appear to be overscale and not very accurate so don't pay too much for them.

Service sheets for these old locos can be found at http://www.vdweerdt.nl/piko_n.html

I have a fair number of old PIKO items having bought them in early 2000's on Ebay and also in Berlin.

Pretty basic stuff. But there weren't any other items of East Europe about at the time.

Ideal to give a flavour for through trains etc.

I should have mentioned that the LOCO ELECT   0238   3   ARNOLD   SNCF CL CC 7107 ALSTHOM ELECTRIC LOCO BLACK BASE MODEL FOR SZD CONVERSION

Is for conversion to an Fk-07 Class loco bought by the USSR in 1959 from France.

I just need to figure out how...................

Having reviewed, I think that the RENFE 376 version of this loco may be the easier conversion model. Alternative would be to get a bodyshell generated on CAD to fit the donor chassis and have it 3d printed......

Anyone interested?

I have a couple of these too. They are all right if you want to have them stationary on a layout, but useless in a moving train. The wheels are just vaguely clipped into the bogies and derail at the slightest hitch. Shame, as getting Russian sleeping cars in green or dark blue rather than the new livery is not really possible.
Cheers; Brian (a different one!)

Hi,

Thanks for the old Piko advice. Any advice always useful.

Didn't know the Russians had bought the Alsthom loco too...

pic as googled it...

I don't have any old Piko (I think) but am sure will come across some along the way so thanks again.

Cheers weave  :beers:
