Onboard Train Cam for N Gauge?
« on: November 06, 2018, 09:01:16 pm »
Hi all,

Some advice/guidance please.....

What can anyone tell me about how viable this idea is?
Is there something already available?
What sort of cost is involved?

I've no idea myself as it's not something that interested me.

However, now it does and I need to find out the answers!

Thanks
Thanks
Phil Holman

@ScottishModeller  This is definitely viable Phil, there have been a few posts on the forum from members who have done just that.  I have not time right now, but I am sure someone will be along soon to point you in the right direction.

Hi David,

I hope you are right as being able to do this will either make or break something I am involved with. (cannot say more at this stage)

Just waiting for the responses - I'm impatient though....
Thanks

@ScottishModeller  Phil, just had two minutes and here is one I found -

http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=18775.msg211022#msg211022

I am sure if you do a search on Youtube there will be something there.  I ordered this a coupe of weeks ago  for the same purpose as you -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SQ12-Waterproof-mini-1080P-HD-Video-Recorder-Sports-Camera-Wide-Angle-lot-KL2/263618104769?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=562694292342&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

and I am sure it was as a result of a recommendation on the forum.

Are you looking for something which will just take video, or broadcast it "live" as well?

@ScottishModeller

Here is my attempt:

These cameras evolve pretty quickly but the theory stays pretty much the same.

I expect others will pop up with their contributions.

If you can get a technical spec from them and a budget then itís completely possible, one thing to be aware of is HD isnít all the same, the dark art is in the compression for recording which is where a lot of quality is lost. Also a cheep £20 camera wonít look as good as a £200 camera as one will have better auto iris functionality and other more refined features.

It depends on the exact requirements too. I'm also presuming this relates to the Great Model Railway Show - so I presume you just want some footage from a train whizzing around, entering/exiting a tunnel perhaps. Rather than lots of slow footage of shunting or whatever.

Ultimately you could stick an action camera on a flat wagon, as long as your clearances aren't too tight. Something like a Go Pro Hero Session is basically a 38mm cube and will give a decent picture quality.

Would a cyclist helmet camera do the job?, just a thought.

That was my thought - Hence suggesting the Go Pro Session. Most would likely be too big, you want a Ďbulletí shape one really. Garmin VIRB May be ok. Youíll get far better quality than most smaller cameras, but it would be a bit hacky.

Searching AliExpress for bullet action camera yields a number you could try for £30ish.

Stephen Humphreys  AKA @Elvenhome me made one from an Amazon spy pen for about £20 iirc, mounted it on a flatbed truck.  Gave pretty good results as far as I could see.

A few photos of my camtruck.  Pinhole HD camera, recharges and conects to the laptop with the USB plug, got a 16G SD card fitted and the battery has enough capacity to fill it. Had it about a year, bought on Amazon and less than £20 IIRC.
