« on: November 05, 2018, 11:50:54 am »
Hi all

I know nothing about the older Dapol stock but my local shop has one at a good price.

Is it possible to convert these pre tender drive locos to DCC if yes anyone got any links or hints as to whats involved

If it is possible that is.

Thanks

Paul

If it is Dapol, the only format they have produced has the motor mounted in the tender driving the loco wheels via a cardan shaft (erroneously described by some as "tender drive")
All Dapol A3s have a DCC socket in the tender.

That's odd

I have had a look and it's loco drive with no drive shaft, it has 3 wires from tender to loco but that's all

I assumed if was an old Dapol as it's in a Dapol box, who else made a N-Gauge Flying Scotsman in LNER Apple green?

Farish (Poole) and Minitrix both did...

Three wires between loco and tender isn't right for either in 'Factory Spec' though.
One possible explanation for the extra wires might be if the previous owner has hardwired a chip mounted in the tender.

Minitrix Scotsman looks like this - note the "skirt" around the bottom of the boiler hiding the mechanism:

Old Poole Farish Scotsman looks like this - note the horrid small front wheels and the rods on the outer driving wheels have simple green pins unlike the Minitrix loco

Thanks for all the help, I knew I didn't know much about early Dapol, but it turned out going by the photos kindly posted above to be a Minitrix in a Dapol box, that will teach me to go shopping without my reading glasses.

Good job I didn't buy first and ask questions later, like I normally do. :(

Thanks again for saving the day.

Im sure there will be a lot of people who would say that the Minitrix loco is the superior version.

Just because its not dapol its not worth purchasing
