3DR printed - ASW POA Scrap Wagons
« on: October 29, 2018, 03:59:25 pm »
At the Newbury show this weekend I met @RussellH who was exhibiting and had a very useful second hand stand.  Amongst the items on sale were a cross section of prototypes and seconds from the 3DR range of prints.  Several items were purchased including something special, but more of that later, and these included some ASW POA Scrap Wagons.  These are designed to sit on PECO chassis and are an interesting subject for a modern image rake.

The plastic (not FUD) takes quite a bit of preparation being a powder laid down in layers and sprayed with an adhesion agent.  The result after the excess powder is burnished off with a toothbrush and a fibreglass pen is a sandstone type surface that requires careful preparation.  The plastic also drinks paint, which is great for a rust finish essentially dying the surface that when over panted and scratched back gives a good rust aged effect. Some additional painting and handmade decals and the results are quite acceptable.

Hi Simon

I don't hang around, unfortunately the enamel paint takes time to dry or I would have got this far on Saturday night  :D

Actually, I have done several rakes with this finish before and it's not complicated (once you know what you are doing).

The chassis are due in a few days and Russell is trying to sort me out the ladder etches, so time to pause and let the paint cure.

lathe and mill scrap from steel materials.  There is nothing as accurate as real rust, but you have to seal it with a matt varnish to seal it or it will crumble away completely with time.

With the ladders added they are ready for my clubs next running day.

These 3DR prints make the basis of very nice models.

They've come out really well! I wrote an article for the NGS Journal a little while back about building an SJA scrap wagon from a Farish MEA , in which I mentioned the 3DR prints but said that I'd never seen one "in the flesh": frankly, yours are much better than I would have expected. I was planning on buying a pack of three MTA bodies from Shapeways soon and I can only hope that I can do as nice a job.

Will you be mixing in a few HSA (converted coal hoppers) as well? This train looks great and would be an easy one to recreate: https://youtu.be/RPuyRSaN4GY

Believe me. These things always have a logical explanation usually
