Video of "British diesel, electric and steam trains in 1959"
« on: August 18, 2018, 03:06:47 pm »
Apologies if this has already been posted but I just stumbled across this excellent film made in 1959 covering British diesel, electric and steam trains in that era:-
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

She who must be obeyed says I am spending too much time on this forum. I love her dearly but what does she know?

Thanks for that Del. Highly interesting for me for the shots of the Barking flyovers under construction and the freight trains of the time. The finale with DP1 is superb too.

Thanks very much Del - very interesting

I was particularly interested in the footage of the South African Railways condensing steam locomotive. Resorting to Dr Google I found the following:

"Steam locomotives that use condensers have periodically appeared on railway during the heyday of steam operation. The most notable examples were the Class-25C's used on the South Africa Railways during the post WW2 years, to extend their operating range of steam locomotives across the arid Great Karoo region located on the western side of South Africa. The SAR Class-25C's did experience a range of problems, such as fouling by lubrication oil and insufficient condensing capacity that required extra water be frequently added. These problems led the SAR to eventually remove the condensers from their class-25C's. A brief experiment using condensers was undertaken on a steam-turbine-electric locomotive in the USA, except that the condensers froze during cold sub-freezing winter temperatures."

Here is some more gumpf on them as well as some pictures:

Thanks very much Del, really enjoyed it, can remember the Peak's shown in the early shots running through Bedford as a child. Think I even "bagged" D208, I remember I got most of the D200 range.

cheers
Graham

Thank you very much for this, Dennis.

It was marvellous!

The commentary (I heard every word) and music were a delight.

And, as is so often the case, what's in the background can be of particular interest.  For instance, 60909 at 10:30.

Thanks again and all best wishes.

John

The Table-Top Railway is a train set trying and failing to be a model railway.

I believe that train sets and model railways are fun.
