Help needed - what paint for 3d military models?
« on: May 16, 2018, 02:33:23 pm »
I wonder if some of our military modellers maybe able to help?
When the N gauge society warflats eventually are released, I'm planning on a couple of military trains to run on Northallerton (the branch line to Redmire is used by the military at Catterick, there are occasional trains)
I've bought myself some nice little 3d printed models from https://www.butlersprintedmodels.co.uk. I bought a few Saxons and few Scimitars. On first inspection they look really nice models and very cheap. And on top of that, they printed them at 1/148!

Anyway, I will need to paint them - so what are my choices? Id prefer to paint them looking something like this

http://arcaneafvs.com/fv107scimitar.html

I have absolutely no knowledge of military modelling - I had to ask a friend what to buy in the first place - but I do have an airbrush. What colour paints to I need? Im guessing that most military modellers paint using acrylics?

cheers

Thanks for that. Really I have no idea about military modelling, and I really need to know which specific colours to use to get that green/black camouflage effect. I guess there are several ranges available.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I should have said in my first post that someone on here mentioned butlersprintedmodels - cant rmember who, but thanks anyway.

@snowwolfflair recommends Tamiya if you have 3d prints
Tamiya spray gunmetal is a very nice metallic and is ether based so can go straight on FUD

I always use Halfords Grey  undercoat ( also cheap) ( or red) as it shows up the bits needing attention! ) plus any tamiya sprays to hand

Warhammer paints are but readily available for gunmetal and other metallics

Well this is what arrived from Butlersprintedmodels. Printed at 1/148th.
Im really pleased with the models. Its a bit of a delicate operation to remove the support material, but there is a youtube video which shows you how to do it.

This is one of the scimitars. I'll be painting them up tonight hopefully

Thanks for that @Railwaygun. Ive been following his thread. To be honest I dont think these military models are printed with FUD, I would suggest they arent as brittle as FUD but I may be wrong. I've done a couple of things in FUD, a track tamper and the RHTT set. Neither of these came out the box in the same way as the BPM kits. These kits have lots of support material still attached wheras the shapeways kit I've had has never had any support material when its arrived on my doorstop. Not sure if there is a different printing process or shapeways remove it first?
Either way the military models were a snip compared to the price of kit I have bought through shapeways. That scimitar for instance was a mere 2.50.
I painted them last night, so I should go and take some pictures to post. I'm a bit loathed to though cos I'm definitely not a militrary modeller. However, the effect should be ok when they are strapped to NGS warflat.

deep breath .....

some pictures - my first military models - be gentle folks....

a saxon

a couple of scimitars

A viking thing - very messy I'm afraid

and finally for the sake of contrast a model in white metal from PG models. Is that a Sultan? - I dunno I'm afraid.

I think most noticeably on the PG model, the varnish has dried white. Not sure they need varnishing to be honest but I had some out so they got a blast. Ill repaint them when I do the rest - I have a few more to do.
I think I should have used a mask when doing the two tone colours to give me a clearly definition, but as I say I'll have to repaint anyway.

Thanks

Varnish problem probably due to cold, whitemetal items need to be kept some where warm before varnishing. I have had this with large wargaming items and thought being in a warm room would be enough, but the model was still cold. This only my suspicion.

but the 3' view will be fine! i think they look pretty good! and in 1/148!

Acetone may tone down the ridging a bit - try it on a scrap model / bit of sprue.
