Dapol Class 68 Speakers
« on: April 17, 2018, 09:02:39 am »
Hi all

Sound related so hope this is the correct section

With the new Dapol Class 68 does the DCC ready and DCC Fitted versions come with a factory fitted speaker so only needing a Next 18 decoder for sound or do I also have to locate the correct size speaker as well.

Looked on Dapol.s site and all the say is DCC Sound ready, but don't confirm if the speaker is pre-fitted or not.

Thanks

Paul

No speaker the non-sound ones. I can't help with which you need though I'm afraid.

Following you around the forums, DCC Ready doesn't have a speaker and I'm pretty sure DCC Fitted doesn't either. This has been discussed on RMWeb a few weeks ago in the 'N Gauge 68' thread and somebody discussed fitting sound to one IIRC.

...

To me, this raises an interesting legal question.

What is the legal definition of 'DDC Sound ready'? We all understand 'DCC ready' to mean that a model so described is, without any further modification, ready to enable DCC functionality upon insertion of a DCC chip. So can one reasonably take 'DCC Sound ready' to mean that a model so described is, without any further modification, ready to enable DCC Sound functionality upon insertion of a DCC Sound chip? If yes, then a model marketed and sold as 'DCC Sound ready' must have a speaker fitted or the marketing/sale of that model is likely to breach the Trade Descriptions Act 1968.

Haven't BachFar set a precedence here by marketing and selling 'DCC Sound ready' models with a speaker fitted, reinforcing the above understanding of 'DCC Sound ready'?

No chance whatsoever IMO!

A speaker is a necessary part of a sound conversion. That some manufacturers have included them in no way means that one not doing so is in breach of the trade descriptions act, that's insanity.

It is ready to accept sound with the necessary hardware additions and no further modification to the loco.

Also the first farish sound ready locos didnít come with speakers already fitted to the tenders, as you had to fit the speakers in the tender with the castles, in fact Iíd go as far to say more sound ready locos have been released in N gauge with out speakers fitted than the 1 that was released with the speaker fitted.

Farish 101 DMU, had a space for a speaker but didn't include one, but only sold as DCC Ready (1st batch)

Dapol were claiming DCC sound ready back as far as their Voyager. Could you even get 6 pin sound decoders then!?

I never said you were insane, just that notion, subtle but important distinction! You may well be insane, but thatís not for me to judge :)

You could argue by extension that DCC ready locos should include a decoder, as the hardware is requisite to conversion.

It would be good if more manufacturers started to include speakers, but a significant number of people could rightly say theyíre paying for bits they will never use.

If the alternative is extra weight (as opposed to a void) then there could be a performance advantage to a non speaker fitted loco.

One might, but not I - I come here to discuss and exchange ideas, not to argue. And to posit that I could argue thus, you either, haven't read my post or, you haven't understood it.

Thanks for the info regarding the speaker. Now just got to pluck up the courage to try another Dapol, given my bad luck record with Dapol. :(

As widely reported the 68 does seem a step up for them. Still some frustrating QC issues with things like handrails, but I donít think youíll be disappointed.
