Bachmann 36-567 or Zimo MX618N18 (they are the same thing).

Assuming you don't want to have sound, that is.

I have run in the new loco on dc and will put the next 18 chip into the loco later....other than setting up with a long address and setting a speed curve what other features does the new type of decoder offer over a standard 6 pin chip ?..

That depends on the decoder, BUT more pins generally means more function outputs. A 6 pin decoder typically has 2 functions, the Zimo non sound Next 18 for example, has 4 functions plus 2 aux outputs, the Zimo sound chip will have  all that plus loudspeaker connections.

On the new Farish Class 40 Farish this enables you to turn the front and rear lights on/off independently, as well as being able to turn the front and rear cab light on/off independently.

Each extra function gives you a switchable action, which through CV settings you can program to be of momentary or on/off toggle behaviour. Your imagination is the limit :)

Dave

I've just purchased a green centre headcode Class 40 and to expand the original question further - I would be interested in the general consensus as to what would be the best Next 18 'sound' decoder / sound project to install?
