Locked out!
« on: February 24, 2018, 07:49:17 am »
My venerable 10 year old laptop has finally decided to play up on me.

It runs Vista, but has been fine. However, when I turned it on today I got the usual ugly picture of myself and asked for the password - but that's as far as I got.

When I enter it, all I get is "The User Public Service service failed the login" and "User profile cannot be loaded."

Now this is pretty serious, because I cannot access ANYTHING!!

 :help:

Any ideas, folks?  :worried:

We have two laptops here so if a problem like that happens I use the working one to Google the problem.
There's always someone else who's had the same problem.

George. I’m no conputer expert but I googled your message and this is what I found.
Not sure if it helps

Method 2: Enable the built-in Administrator's account. follow the steps:
Start System and press “F8” to enter Safe mode with Command Prompt.
Choose any Administrator account and you will enter the elevated command prompt, type net user administrator /active: yes and press Enter.
Close the command prompt. Restart the computer and you will now see the built-in Administrator account log on icon added on Screen.
If you want to disable the built-in administrator account, just type net user Administrator /active: no, then you will see the built-in Administrator account log on icon removed.

Method 3: Follow the steps from this using built-in Administrator's account and check if it helps:
You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error message

Seen this sort of thing happen sometimes after an update when the PC is still busy sorting stuff out and starting up services, and you try to log in too soon.  Used to happen to my missus on her old laptop, but would ok if left alone for a while before logging in.

Thanks for the input! I sincerely hope that you are right! The stuff I'm reading on the net about recovering from this situation seems awfully complicated.

It's 7.30am here so it's had overnight to make itself better. I'll give it a try when Mrs B gets up.

Fingers crossed!

Just switched on.... same as yesterday. No joy  :'(

Looks like I'll be wrestling with it all day today.

Ah well, on the bright side, it's raining anyway.

OK..... followed instructions on phone, got into safe mode, and actually reset the password.

Back to normal power up, same result!

I'm going to try without a password at all, but now I'm having trouble getting back into safe mode!  >:(

Still, nothing better to do on a rainy Sunday arvo, I suppose....  :censored:

Success!!! :bounce:

I managed to get back into safe mode, and this time, instead of attempting to change or reset the password, I saw an option called "System restore." At first I was confusing this with Restore Factory Settings, and steered clear of it. However, it assured me that no photos or documents would be lost, and gave me the option of restoring things to as they were on Thurs 22nd Feb.

Bingo! Password and logon work as usual. It's like I've gone back in time! I just hope it's not like Groundhog day and in two day's time it all goes pear-shaped again  :uneasy:

At least I'll know what to do if it does.

Thanks so much, Allan, Martin and Nick for pointing me in the right direction.  :beers:

I've learned something today!  :NGF: :NGaugersRule:

Think I'll brave the rain and have a celebratory beer  :beers:

Cheers, George

Do a backup of all data ASAP ( just in case! )

And don’t switch it off very day - the HDs last longer! ( blow out the air vents with compressed air - a portable that old probably has mammoth hairs bunging up the fan!!)

 :laughabovepost:

I forgot that was the year!

Regarding switching the computer off, I haven't been, until recently when I read about them causing fires.

I shall inspect the vents.
