Baseball !!! Serrwiiiing, batter, batter, batter...
« on: February 18, 2018, 04:53:12 pm »
Well, baseball's the name and er...

...baseball's the game.

I'm a baseball fan, and I follow as much as I can of the baseball season from the USA. I support the Boston Red Sox, and have done for the last twenty years. The Spring Training season starts at the end of this month and the regular season commences in 40 days time.

I know there are another couple of other 'ball fans on this forum so I thought I'd start this thread tucked away at the back of the forum so we can all have a bit of a chat as the season progresses.

So...

..."Play Ball!"

Well, it was actually invented by an Englishman who thought that the Americans should have their own national sport. (I love reminding Yanks that fact).

Something I'm afraid I've never got into, although I'm a huge gridiron fan and have followed the Green Bay Packers since the sport was first shown on Channel 4 all those years ago. The only time I watch 'soccer' is the World Cup.

The Orioles have always been my team. Eddie Murray!!

Here's my ode to baseball (with a Rule 1 train going by)

Three up, six to go for a team.

My second favourite sport after Association Football.

Always liked baseball as played as a kid with a couple of American families and a Japanese family who lived in our street.

Big Giants fan as San Francisco is the only place I've been to in the USA (5 times). Eighteen years ago now since the first visit. Different wife, different house, different dogs now but the team's still there!.

I just love San Francisco and AT & T Park.

Thanks Michael for starting the thread. We sort of dabbled last year with the World Series but hopefully there'll be some more interest if the Mods don't mind.

Looking forward to March 29th.

Cheers weave  :beers:

@scottmitchell74 nice little ballpark there.

I saw the Orioles at home in September, I'm afraid that got a bit of a wuppin'. Nice ballpark though.

I'm quite lucky that my wife likes the USA too, and until recently worked for BA so we get free air travel, which has enabled me to go to Fenway Park a few times, Arlington, Chase Field and Baltimore.

Bring on the regular season, looks like we've got some rivalry goin' on!

Regarding baseball fans, I'd just like to say what a lovely bunch of respectable, sober and God fearing people we are....

Itís a good time to start a thread. NY TV was full of reports from spring training this evening! Shame you are a Red Sox fan, but as I'm a big Yankees fan it should make for a lively thread. Count me in

I'm not a fan of watching basebase ball. but did enjoy playing it. We had an American major on our RAF base and he got us playing it. First inter section games and then RAF Neatishead against Alconbury or Mildenhall or Lakenheath. We did actually win some games against them, which was as much a suprise to us as it was to them...

Well, @weave beat me to it this evening.

The 2018 Major League Baseball season starts this evening  (US time!).

I see the Giants have got the Dodgers for opening night, that'll have Weave months edge of his seat!

Us? Well, we (Boston Red Sox) have got Tampa Bay Rays, so should be interesting.

Let's see what the season brings.

Play ball!!!

Just watched the Yankees opener at the Blue Jays. Snow on the ground still, so not feeling much like spring yet! Multi homer game for Giancarlo Stanton, Severino pitching deep into the game and a very satisfying 6-1 win. Nice tribute to the late Roy Halladay from the Blue Jays as well.

Hi guys,

Had been getting into the Easter spirit (well, cider) and posted yesterday on the World Series thread instead .

Hope you all enjoyed the opening day. Wins for the Giants, Yankees (Chetcombe) and Orioles (Scottmitchell 74).

Sorry emjaybee  :(. The Red Sox were doing so well until the 8th. I was going to reply to your post but I knew the score and presumed you didn't at the time. Presume you do now. Anyway, not long to get back on the saddle.

I made the Giants game (just on the virtual thingy) til about the 5th inning but obviously my Spring drinking training wasn't up to scratch and bedtime won. Slept in til 10 AM UK time (had been working yesterday too) and seeing we BEAT LA on the first day in LA helped my hangover immensely  :claphappy:

HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL

Cheers weave  :beers: (sometimes )

Good man Weave!

I admire your dedication to the cause, 14 innings is a loooooong game. Worth waiting up for a result like that though. Glad the Giants are holding their own at present.

I've been keeping myself to myself so that I don't jinx our opening streak! RedSox have started off strong (situation normal), now I'm just waiting for the inevitable (and also normal) collapse of the mid-season, to be followed to who-knows-what.

As some on hear know, being a baseball fan is a rollercoaster ride of an immense magnitude, all the more if you're a RedSox fan. Hero-to-zero-to-hero (and vice-versa) is the norm.
