Farish 170s - seeing double
« on: February 02, 2018, 08:33:10 pm »
I've acquired a couple of LM 170s (same number)

London Midland  now West Midlands Railway 170s are kept clean and free of graffiti
so weathering one etc, doesn't seem to be an option.

I intend to DCC them - but how will I tell them apart?

Why not renumber one set?

Put a smudge of sooty exhaust on the roof of one but not the other?  I doubt that they clean the roof on a daily basis ;)

I don't know of anyone who does specific London Midland 170 numbers. But I would imagine that you'll find suitably close from the likes of Fox, Railtec, etc. Do Electra do vinyl overlays?

Different crew  although the dark windows may make that harder. Lights is another option as you can then turn the lights on/off before making an embarassing mistake.

I'd agree with the roof suggestion - likewise underframes don't get cleaned so one could have a dirty underframe.

The Yellow sign on the centre window is a no couple (ie coupler broken) to the windows of both ends of one unit

I don't know of anyone who does specific London Midland 170 numbers
Railtec
Place a custom order, based on the fleet operated
I placed a custom order some time ago, now covered all the Scottish Class 156 and 47/7

I assume you have two Class 170
Even after renumbering you may struggle to tell them apart, I had the same issue with multiples of Class 158, 220 and 221 units

What DCC system are you using?
What point control system are you using?
You could use two toggles that you place over the point switch, and will then always know where the unit is

Is your layout a loop or end to end?
You could ensure the Class 170 units are turned so that power/dummy are opposite of each other, and then get used to which unit is which
I used this method for my Class 220 and 221 units

I like the idea of the sticker in the cab window, plus some gentle weathering, to distinguish between 170s - thanks for the suggestions.

As for a layout, still in the planning but essentially single track junction, with a laybye siding on the electrified main line. 4 baseboards with a area of 6>7ft x 2ft 3in > 2ft 6in
The branch will cross the ML on the level and will lead to a Scenic staging terminus - passenger only
Period 2007>2017

DCC - digitrax - I already have the stuff, plus Ted Smale of Sunningwell Command Control is a good and supportive friend.

...on the electrified main line.

Sounds great - a proper railway!  :D

Cheers Jon  :)
