Bachmann 36-556ra decoder
« on: February 04, 2018, 03:46:28 pm »
Does anyone know who really makes the Bachmann 36-556ra decoder? Iíve had a hunt around Google, but have failed to turn anything up. What I want to know is, is it based on their earlier 6 pin decoders (which Iím currently replacing in my stock with Zimo decoders now some of them are cheaper),or something more modern and better? Or in other words, are they any good? Iíve got a loco that it will suit well, and it is a third of the price of a small Zimo that would otherwise fit. Just need it to drive a Pannier tank, so no fancy lighting functions required. The difference between the MX622N and the early Bachman 6 pin decoders is like night and day.

Thanks

Julian Thornhill

Don't know who actually make them but I have one in my Farish tank and it runs that without issue.  Do any other makes offer RA 6 pin decoders.

Don't understand why it's so much cheaper than the straight pin option though as given how few they must sell it should be more expensive, unless it's done to sell their Farish tank as nothing else will fit that.

I believe the 36-556 and 36-556RA are based on the same rather unsophisticated 2-function Soundtraxx decoder. What Zimo decoder are you referring to as I understood the only other one small enough to fit an N Gauge Pannier is the CT DCX77z.

I was thinking about the Zimo MX616N, which is 8x8 mm. But it is also £36....

Ah, that's a new 6-function Zimo model. At that price I'd probably go with the CT DCX77z although it is getting hard to find.

Thanks for that, and the link to the other thread. I thought Iíd already searched this forum for any existing threads, but clearly Iím incompetent. I think Iíll bite the bullet and buy the expensive Zimo decoder. Thank you to all who took the trouble to respond.

Do Zimo do a right angled pin decoder?  A straight pin decoder won't fit the Farish Panier

Iím putting it in a different loco. My idea was to either fit a small horizontal decoder, or a right angled one that would protrude into the cab. However, Zimo use fairly thin pins, so with careful use of fine pliers it would be easy to bend the pins to a right angle.

Other recent threads seem to recommend the ď straight 6 pin, 4 function ď  Zimo MX622n @ £20
